Dear College Community, Welcome back to the beginning of a new academic year. I know that many of you have been here during the summer months, but the start of a new academic year always brings the promise of new beginnings for our students and for us. This summer has been a time of substantial change and transition. Many of you are returning to a new Interim Chancellor and to three new Vice Chancellors. I understand that transitions and change are stressful, and that we all adjust in different ways and in different time frames. I find myself no different … in my transition from leaving the college to becoming Chancellor, I have had to adjust to the loss of my “safety net” and face an uncertain future with wonderful possibilities. The thing that has helped me most with this transition is you, the City College family, and our focus on the needs of our students.

And yes, City College of San Francisco is truly a diverse and vibrant family. We do not always agree, and we have some lively and passionate debates, but at the end of the day, we care and support each other through difficult times, and help each other to move forward. The theme of this year’s All College Day is “Making Meaningful Improvements: Strengthening Our Culture of Intentionality.” Despite the fact that this topic was chosen by the Staff Development Committee long before I became the Interim Chancellor, it resonates with where I am and where I believe we are as a college. City College of San Francisco has strong roots. We have an amazing 80-year history of excellence and of serving the community. As we look back with great pride, we are also moving forward to serve our students and our community of today and tomorrow. We go forward with the richness of that history but also the need to change to meet the needs of a changing world. Therefore, I am asking each of you for your help. Everyone who is part of this City College family has the power of intention, and I am asking you to make an intentional choice to move forward together and to be open to the possibility that things will get better. We have a lot of areas that we need to discuss, make decisions about, and move forward. We have intentional decisions that we need to make regarding our accreditation Self Evaluation, our college decision-making processes, the services that we offer our students across all our college locations, and our planning processes. We need to make intentional decisions regarding how we interact with each other, our students, and our community. And yet, some of our processes and ways of communicating are a bit “clunky” and need to improve. We will get better. But we have to start somewhere, so we will start with what we have and work together every day to improve. That is my intention. I know and trust that we can do this while continuing our rich history of serving students and the community. I wish you a wonderful year and look forward to engaging and changing with you. Sincerely,

Susan E. Lamb

“Making It Meaningful:

Authentic Assessment for Intentional Education”

In a culture that looks at assessment as driven by accreditation, activities tend to be limited to compliance. This presentation will set aside accreditation as a secondary concern and reorient assessment as an integral part of a college’s efforts to strengthen student success. We will suggest that by turning away from external and top-down pressures, which result in box-checking activities and by turning towards grass-roots, faculty and staff-driven reflection on student success, assessment can become a meaningful, enlightening, and ultimately rewarding process.
