Current Products, Product Updates, Safety Information, and Governance Considerations. Presenters will field questions during the final panel discussion on Tuesday. This session is designed for new participants but all past attendees are welcome.

Functional Safety of Machinery Agricultural, earthmoving and construction machinery increasingly depend on advanced electronic controls systems. Because it is important to protect workers and the public from potential new dangers in these environments, unexpected results of failure of one or more control system components must be considered. Functional Safety is the discipline created to address this complex issue, covering safety related control systems of all energy types on some types of machines.

This session will cover the general concepts, terms, and evolving ISO standards including the differences for earthmoving, agricultural, and general construction machinery. It will also cover creating a safety case and system analysis based on ISO 25119 for tractors, ISO 13849 for construction and ISO 19014 series for earthmoving, to protect users and support company efforts to prevent hazards. The session will conclude with a panel Q&A.

Passive (Active) Safety Technology – Taking the Operator Out of the LoopThis session is intended to discuss “active safety”. Active safety has various definitions but in general it refers to safety that help avoid accidents. However, active safety is increasingly being used to describe systems that use a more advanced understanding of the state of the vehicle to avoid accidents. Examples of these systems include but are not limited to:– Adaptive Cruise Control– Lane Keep Assist – Collision Avoidance Systems– Anti-lock brakes and stability control

Decal Design 101 WorkshopDecals and labels are a manufacturer’s “voice” for conveying safety, instruction-for-use, and brand image on their products. This session will focus on what’s most important in decal design, durable materials, printing methods, digital decals and kits, and smart labeling for today’s manufacturers.

Incident Investigations: Tools and Best PracticesProactive product safety measures can be very effective in minimizing the number and severity of incidents which can occur with a fielded piece of equipment. However, incidents still can and do happen. This session will cover the basic information any product safety professional needs to know for being prepared to address incidents in the field. Starting with the basic tools and advanced technology and methods. This session will provide information on what you need to be ready for when an incident occurs, who needs to be involved with the investigation, and how to go about the investigation onsite.

Future Delivery of Technical Manuals There are new authoring and illustration tools that are being used to develop technical manuals. Delivery is going digital with mobile apps, on-board manual information, quick start cards and innovative interactive devices. This session will discuss in-process collaborative authoring, future pushes towards digitally delivered animations and visual content, and the trends and challenges as technology in each area evolves.

Incident ReportingIncident reporting is more than just alerting someone that an incident has occurred. It is about capturing the story of what took place leading up to and resulting in an equipment failure that has a potentially hazardous outcome. In this section, we will take a look at what sort of information is necessary so that we can understand what transpired before, during, and after an incident. We will also look at some of the challenges of this process, for example; language, cultural differences and how to define an incident. Lastly, it will cover some of the ways to work through these issues.

Translations Panel Q&AHow can you be sure that nothing is lost in translation when you produce multi-lingual content? This session will explore new translation management tools like XTM, ways to reduce translation costs while maintaining quality, and managing transitions across translation suppliers. Our panel of presenters include translation industry experts and technical publications managers who will share their first-hand experience and knowledge. The panel will also take questions from the audience.

Product Safety & Compliance Seminar

Driving Safety Culture through Machine Safety TechnologySafety technologies are not always a quick fix. Too many organizations believe they can implement safety technologies as a shortcut for considering the challenging task of incorporating these products into an organization’s culture. Caterpillar will discuss how they are bridging this gap in helping customers address safety issues like safety culture, ergonomics, worker fatigue and ground worker safety.

Delivering Consistent Safety MessagesConsistent safety messages can improve the end-user’s understanding and help build a unified brand, as well as offer efficiencies through shared content. However, implementing a process to help ensure a consistent safety message can be difficult for several reasons such as resistance to change and revision control. During this session, the speakers will share their perspective on the benefits and challenges that come with creating consistent safety messages and how it’s being implemented company wide.

Block Chain Technology — A Tool to Advance Product Safety & Compliance? The technology can be described as a decentralized transaction ledger system providing simplified authentication, trust, and recording. It has been compared to “Triple Entry Accounting.” Will Block Chain provide secure, authenticated, trusted and verified transfers of information between manufacturer, suppliers and customers? This session will consider potential uses and issues.

Fire InvestigationHow did this happen? Why investigate? Should you hire an investigator? What is a good investigator? Does an investigator need to know the NFPA 1033 standard? What is the NFPA 921 Fire Investigation Guide about? If asked to support an investigation, what should I do? What should I not do? What can I learn from the event? What do I need to do with the documentation that is pulled together? How long should I keep it? what the data is actually reporting.

Big Data and Telematics in Today’s Machines This session offers insights into data machines today and how they are capable of gathering and transmitting information to provide new efficiencies and uptime potentials. Insights into the scope of machine data will be shared. The session will also offer samples of data analytics. The team will discuss some of the key aspects of the use of this data and the critical importance of understanding what the data is actually reporting.

Global Regulations and Standards Development: How Culture Drives Results Today countries are creating regulations on equipment where none had existed. At first, some appear to replicate regulations from other regions. But a close look may reveal significant differences relating to the cultures involved. In the context of Standards and Regulations development, it is important to understand underlying cultural drivers – national, contextual, historical, etc. This session will provide an overview of the impact of culture and provide guidance on developing ‘win-win’ strategies for clarity and efficient market access for your products.

International Safety StandardsThis session will summarize off-road mobile machinery standards activity with an emphasis on earthmoving, mining and forestry. Other machine types potentially affected will be mentioned. Late-breaking regulatory activity, primarily focused on North America, will be covered. The presenter possesses a broad perspective of standards affecting equipment types gained from two decades of direct involvement.

Design for Fire PreventionWhat is the Fire tetrahedron? In the design of a machine, how can you control and minimize fire risk? Some factors like oxygen, which allows a fire to grow and spread, is not generally something a design can control. Yet designers can control the available ignition energy which ignites a fire, and also the separation of fuel and ignition sources. This session will cover examples of design practices, which when followed, may help minimize fire risks. The session will also provide insights into methods useful in determining areas in need of design focus, before the product is sold.
