The Flavour Creations ethos is focused upon improving the lives of its customers by providing food and drink solutions that not only taste great but offer maximum nutritional density and choice. Flavour Creations supplies to hospitals, residential aged care facilities and directly to consumers living in the community - both in Australia and internationally.

DYSPHAGIAAccording to Speech Pathology Australia*, Dysphagia is the medical term for difficulty, or inability to swallow. Dysphagia is listed by the World Health Organisation in both the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) and the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health.
Dysphagia may present as difficulty with sucking, swallowing, drinking, chewing, eating, controlling saliva, taking medication, or protecting the airway. Dysphagia can

Flavour Creations understands that when managing swallowing disorders the ease and availability of thickened fluids is crucial to maintaining sufficient levels of hydration, energy and nutrition. Flavour Creations’ Ready To Drink (RTD) is a fantastic range of pre-thickened beverages, which takes the hassle out of everyday drinking for individuals with dysphagia. Available in three standard viscosities, RTD’s are packaged in the new Dysphagia Cup. In addition, our thickening powders are the indispensable solutions for broad-based dysphagia management providing excellent hydration through a unique, concentrated formula.
Dysphagia patients should be assessed and monitored by a Speech Pathologist, Nurse and Dietitian. For patient safety and welfare it is important to report observed changes to these clinicians. Symptoms do not necessarily always present as with silent aspiration. For further information on the condition, diagnosis and management of dysphagia, please refer to a Speech Pathologist.

Maintaining good nutrition depends on one’s ability to consume a wide variety of foods. Unfortunately, health problems can sometimes make eating difficult. For example a texture modified diet may be prescribed for someone who has had a stroke, suffered a head/neck injury or has difficulty chewing properly. The required level of food and fluid texture is prescribed by a speech pathologist, while dietitians ensure individuals are meeting their hydration and nutrition needs. Through the use of cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art facilities, Flavour Creations has successfully developed a range of shelf stable meal replacements, without compromising flavour and texture. The provision of thickened fluids and texture modified foods is a routine part of the assessment and management of feeding and swallowing difficulties. Patients should be assessed and monitored by a speech pathologist and dietitian to ensure suitability of products. EASY PEEL LID An extended 30mm long x 60mm wide user friendly pull tab on the foil lid to assist opening by people of all ages and dexterity.
EMBOSSED TEXTURE To further assist manual grip the tab has an embossed texture and deep etched ribbing, for extra grip.

UNIQUE CUP SHAPE With its unique angled shape, the dysphagia cup allows the contents to be sipped without any neck extension. The front of the cup is 5mm higher than the back to further assist with this.
CHIN TUCK Or no neck extension is a necessary postural adjustment for people with dysphagia. It also has a suitable diameter, curvature, ribbed sides and indentations for ease of holding.
CUP HOLDER The double-handled Dysphagia Cup Holder further empowers our customers who experience difficulties holding and drinking from any receptacle as it helps keep the Dysphagia Cup inside stable. The reusable Holder is dishwasher safe.

After seven years of research and development and an investment of over six million dollars, Flavour Creations launched the Dysphagia Cup in 2016. An innovation in accessible design, the Dysphagia Cup empowers individuals who currently experience difficulty holding their own cup to feed themselves independently.
Each element of the Dysphagia Cup’s design has been carefully considered with the end user and their accessibility needs in mind. Features include a large easy-to-read foil label with external ribbing and embossed texture to assist with a manual grip. These features combined make the cup easier to open and hold by people who are often physically impaired allowing greater autonomy and restoring dignity in those who would often depend on carers to aid in even simple tasks—like drinking a glass of water.
The Dysphagia Cup design meets and/or exceeds all criteria outlined in Arthritis Australia’s Packaging Design Accessibility Guidelines.

FSMPFood for Special Medical Purposes
Food for special medical purposes (FSMP) is used to manage the diets of people with certain diseases, disorders or medical conditions. These special foods are intended for people whose nutritional requirements cannot be met by regular foods.
Food for special medical purposes can include formulated dietary products intended for use as the only source of nutrition, and also some formulated products that can supplement a person’s food intake. Some of these products can be taken orally, whereas others need to be taken through a feeding tube (e.g. a naso-gastric tube). They are to be used under the supervision of a medical practitioner and other appropriate health professionals.1
Food intended to be consumed as a Sole Source of Nutrition (SSN) or Nutritionally Complete (NC) have minimum and maximum requirements for vitamins and minerals to ensure consumers’ nutritional needs are met and to protect their health and safety. Manufacturers are allowed to go outside these
permitted micronutrient levels for a specific medical condition but this must be fully disclosed on the labelling both in the nutritional panel and as a mandatory warning explaining why.
While this provides greater freedom to manufacture products for specific conditions it does come with added regulations / restrictions to prevent its misuse. There are additional nutritional and labelling requirements and restriction on the premises at which, and the person whom, FSMP products can be sold to.
Under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (FSANZ), FSMP also includes thickened beverages and thickening powders and as such all products intended for individuals with dysphagia should carry the appropriate mandatory statements and where applicable mandatory warnings.
FSANZ has particularly sought to harmonise this standard with other leading food governing bodies including the FDA and the European Commission.

1. Measure the required amount of fluid.
2. Using the clean dry scoop provided measure the correct dose of thickplus into a separate container. Ensure each scoop is levelled.
3. Add the pre-measured dose of thickplus to the fluid.
4. Place the stick blender over the thickplus, pushing it to the bottom of the container.
5. Start the blender on low, gradually building speed without aerating. To prevent aeration do not break the surface of the fluid while the blender is running.
6. Stop the blender. Using a spatula, scrape any thickplus from the sides of the container and put back into the liquid.
7. Reblend until all the thickplus is mixed then allow to stand for 5-10 minutes. Consume thickened fluid and refrigerate any unused portions at 4°C or less for up to 24 hours.

2. 800 watt microwave; heat on high for approximately 50 seconds*.

Unmodified Regular Fluids
• There are variable thickness levels in unmodified fluids. Some are thinner (e.g. water and breast milk) and some are thicker (e.g. fruit nectar).
• Unmodified - Regular fluids do not have thickening agents added to them.
• Drink through any type of teat, cup or straw as appropriate for age and skills.
Mildly Thick Level 150 Nectar-Like Stage 1
• Fluids run freely off the spoon but leaves a mild coating on the spoon.
• Mildly Thick is thicker than naturally thick fluids such as fruit nectars, but for example, not as thick as a thickshake.
• Drink this fluid thickness from a cup.
• Effort required to take this thickness via a standard bore straw.
• 51 - 350 cP. • Can be drunk through a straw.
• Can be drunk from a cup if advised or preferred.

Moderately Thick Level 400 Honey-Like Stage 2

FLUID TEXTURE SCALE
Dysphagia patients should be assessed and monitored by the speech pathologist, nurse and dietitian. For patient safety and welfare it is important to report observed changes to these clinicians. • Food should be easily mashed with a fork.
• May be presented as a thick puree with obvious lumps in it.
• Lumps are soft and rounded (no hard or sharp lumps).
• Recommended particle size for infants and children = 0.2-0.5 cm.
• Recommended particle size for children over 5 years and adults = 0.5 cm.
Texture C - Smooth Pureed
• Equivalent to Level 1 (Dysphagia-Pureed) in USA Food Texture scale1.
• Equivalent to C (Thick Puree Dysphagia Diet) in UK Food Texture Scale2.
• Food in this category is smooth and lump free. It is similar to the consistency of commercial pudding. At times, smooth pureed.
• Food may have a grainy quality, but should not contain lumps.
• Smooth and lump-free but may have a grainy quality.
• Moist and cohesive enough to hold its shape on a spoon (i.e. when placed side by side on a plate these consistencies would maintain their position without ‘bleeding’ into one another).
• Food could be moulded, layered or piped.
• Special Note: Some individuals may benefit from the use of a runny pureed texture. This texture would be prescribed on a case-by-case basis (runny pureed textures do not hold their shape; they bleed into one another when placed side by side on a plate).
