Eliminate the competition.Weeds love to get in the way, so get rid of them and reduce the competition to give your emerging crop a clean start . Crops perform better when they can emerge in weed-free conditions .

Get the small ones.Pre-seed burndown is an ideal time to control small weeds and fall-germinated winter annuals that are trying to get a head start on spring .

Control them earlier.Controlling weeds early helps reduce the chances of weed escapes later on . Weeds that get away produce seed that could be a future problem .

Manage application timing.Managing weeds when they are small reduces the risk of spraying when weeds are outside their ideal window of application .

Smart stewardship.A pre-seed burndown application is part of a smart stewardship plan . It protects valuable in-crop herbicides and seed traits that we all depend on for profitable crop production .

Add more power to your glyphosate – and more benefits to your burndown.Getting out in front of weed competition with a spring burndown gives your crop a great start . From cereals to pulses to canola to soybeans, here’s the top 5 reasons to always plan for a pre-seed burndown in the spring .

Weed control challengeGlyphosate alone used to provide an effective burndown option in cereal crops . But the widespread adoption of glyphosate-tolerant canola, and the alarming spread of glyphosate- and Group 2-resistant weeds, has dramatically reduced the effectiveness of glyphosate-only control programs .

Nufarm solutionBlackHawk herbicide delivers faster, more complete weed control as a pre-seed burndown in cereals, soybeans and corn when tank-mixed with glyphosate . This all-in-one product is a great addition to managing weed resistance with multiple modes of action .

BlackHawk® pre-seed herbicide enters the heat of the battle with fast, flexible and complete broadleaf weed control ahead of cereals, soybeans and corn.

CONQUER® II pre-seed herbicide adds more power to your glyphosate for burndown ahead of seeding canola.

Weed control challengeGlyphosate has been used for years for effective burndown . But with the widespread adoption of glyphosate-tolerant crops like canola and the spread of glyphosate- and Group 2-resistant weeds like kochia and cleavers, growers are now faced with more weed control challenges than ever . Products with a single active ingredient have too narrow a spectrum to control the growing range of weed populations .

Nufarm solutionCONQUER herbicide delivers faster, more complete weed control in a canola pre-seed burndown than glyphosate alone . CONQUER has two active ingredients with two separate modes of action . When mixed with glyphosate, weeds face a triple action threat – especially kochia, cleavers, narrow-leaved hawk’s-beard, volunteer canola, plus glyphosate- and Group 2-tolerant volunteers .

GoldWing® is an effective pre-seed burndown option with multiple modes of action for use before seeding pulses, cereals, flax, corn and canary seed.

Weed control challengeIt’s hard to manage weeds in pulse crops . There are limited in-crop herbicide options that will control a wide spectrum of broadleaf weeds including Group 2-, Group 4- and glyphosate-resistant biotypes . Managing weeds prior to seeding is one of the best actions towards a clean and profitable pulse crop at harvest time .

Nufarm solutionGoldWing herbicide contains two modes of action that help in controlling the toughest weeds in pulses, cereals and other crops . This all-in-one formulation is meant to be tank-mixed with glyphosate in a pre-seed burndown to control early season weeds .

A pre-emergent soil active herbicide that offers extended activity on emerging spring broadleaf and grassy weeds for up to 8 weeks after activation.

Weed control challengeRemember when glyphosate or other non-residual herbicides were all it took to control your wild oats and most broadleaf weeds? Unfortunately, herbicide-resistant weeds mean that Groups 1, 2, 4, 5 and 9 can’t handle the problems alone anymore . Maximizing pulse, soybean and wheat yields depends on residual control of tough grass and broadleaf weeds .

Nufarm solutionFierce® herbicide delivers broad-spectrum, extended soil active weed control . This pre-emergent product is registered for suppression of wild oats and control of various foxtail and brome species . Fierce can help manage Group 1- and 2-resistant grassy weeds along with controlling other broadleaf weeds that impact crop yields .

• Tank-mixable with most burndown and pre-emergent herbicides (i .e . glyphosate, BlackHawk and/or GoldWing)

Performance tips 1 . Emerged weeds – use with a burndown herbicide partner like

glyphosate and BlackHawk or GoldWing

2 . Flushing weeds – residual activity for newly emerging weeds

3 . Emerged crop – Fierce alone can be applied up to 3 days post seeding soybeans, chickpeas and field peas

4 . Refer to label for rates and use patterns

5 . DO NOT incorporate after application or prior to seeding

6 . Pre-seeding applications require the use of minimum disturbance seeding systems

7 . Non-ionic surfactant required if glyphosate is not being tank-mixed

8 . Leave a small checkstrip in the field to show performance

Optimize your in-crop herbicide performance and reduce the risk of weed resistance.Top tips from the chemistry experts

Herbicide resistance is a complex issue and it takes an integrated approach to effectively manage problem weeds . Take kochia for example . It’s a prolific problem weed that’s been a growing challenge for growers . Kochia knows how to get around herbicides, and it takes a multi-pronged approach to effectively control it and reduce the risk of herbicide resistance .

Herbicide layering is a technique that focuses on using pre-seed and in-crop herbicides from different groups that target the same weed species .

• For pre-seed and in-crop application timings, use herbicides with multiple modes of action

• Applied at different times of year

USE HERBICIDE LAYERING. CHECK SPRAY COVERAGE.

• Always change the modes of action and active ingredients in your weed control program

• Remember to go beyond the product or brand names to find the active ingredients

• Become familiar with each product’s active ingredients and modes of action

GET TO KNOW THE ACTIVES.

Mixing order for tank-mixing crop protection productsSpraying is a complex job . When you are tank-mixing several different products, always follow these best practices for mixing order into the sprayer .

WAMLEGS

There are several factors to check before spraying:

• Ensure the sprayer is getting adequate coverage on the weeds for optimum performance

• Always use adequate water volumes, the right droplet size and nozzles for the products being applied

• Keep sprayer speed to 14 mph or less

• Adjust boom height for optimum nozzle type, angle and spacing

For more information, visit sprayers101 .com

• Always read and follow the product label directions

• Leave sufficient time when mixing multiple products

• Micronutrients should be added last

1. Wetable powders, flowables (DC, DF, DG, DS, F, DF, Gr, SG, SP)

2. Agitate, anti-foaming compounds, buffers

3. Microcapsule suspension (ME)

4. Liquid and soluable products (SN, SC, Li, Su)

5. Emulsifiable concentrates (EC)

6. High load glyphsates

7. Surfactants

section, and only used a Group 2 herbicide forweed control… you can expect up to 140

Group 2-resistant weeds at the end of the season.

Optimize your in-crop herbicide performance and reduce the risk of weed resistance.Top tips from the chemistry experts

Cultural practices and crop rotations help manage herbicide resistance .

• Cultivate any saline/alkaline patches in your fields . Seed forage mix (versus spraying) to prevent weeds from setting seeds .

• Get forages established and growing in the fall to get ahead of spring-germinating weeds like kochia

• Weeds like kochia adapt to continuous spraying and thus become resistant to certain herbicides . A mature kochia plant can produce up to 25,000 seeds that could be resistant to Group 2, 4 and 9 herbicides .

• Crop rotations make it harder for weeds to develop resistance . Growing alternate crops with different growth stages helps to keep weeds guessing and competing .

• Crop rotations often require other herbicide groups and different modes of action

CONSIDER YOUR CULTURAL PRACTICES.

Water is often overlooked when planning weed control programs, but it’s a critical component to ensure herbicides work effectively .

• Target a pH of 4-7 for most herbicides

• Total dissolved solids (TDS) should be 250 or less

• Test for water hardness, 120 ppm or less, bicarbonates 500 ppm or less

PAY ATTENTION TO WATER QUALITY.

Managing herbicide-resistant kochiaThe goal is to develop herbicide combinations with a minimum of 2 modes of action to target kochia including biotypes that have stacked Group 2, 4 and 9 (glyphosate) resistance .

Using an integrated approach with herbicides that have multiple modes of action along with different active ingredients that kochia has not developed resistance to is one of the best ways to slow resistance development .

The list of herbicide resistant weeds is growingThe problem of herbicide-resistant weeds continues to grow . In Canada, we are dealing with weeds resistant to Group 1, 2, 4, 5 and 9 chemistry . This trend makes it even more important to use products with multiple modes of action to control the same weed – to reduce the risk of herbicide resistance .

1980sGroup 2 resistance appeared in Alberta, and expanded to all kochia populations in Canada

2017Surveys estimated ~50% of kochia populations were resistant to glyphosate across Western Canada, and continues to spread

Group 4 herbicide-resistant kochia was identified (dicamba, fluroxypyr and 2,4-D)

2012Glyphosate resistance was found in southern Alberta with ~5% of kochia populations resistant to Group 9 herbicides
