Cultural practices and crop rotations help manage herbicide resistance .

• Cultivate any saline/alkaline patches in your fields . Seed forage mix (versus spraying) to prevent weeds from setting seeds .

• Get forages established and growing in the fall to get ahead of spring-germinating weeds like kochia

• Weeds like kochia adapt to continuous spraying and thus become resistant to certain herbicides . A mature kochia plant can produce up to 25,000 seeds that could be resistant to Group 2, 4 and 9 herbicides .

• Crop rotations make it harder for weeds to develop resistance . Growing alternate crops with different growth stages helps to keep weeds guessing and competing .

• Crop rotations often require other herbicide groups and different modes of action

CONSIDER YOUR CULTURAL PRACTICES.

Water is often overlooked when planning weed control programs, but it’s a critical component to ensure herbicides work effectively .

• Target a pH of 4-7 for most herbicides

• Total dissolved solids (TDS) should be 250 or less

• Test for water hardness, 120 ppm or less, bicarbonates 500 ppm or less

Managing herbicide-resistant kochiaThe goal is to develop herbicide combinations with a minimum of 2 modes of action to target kochia including biotypes that have stacked Group 2, 4 and 9 (glyphosate) resistance .

Using an integrated approach with herbicides that have multiple modes of action along with different active ingredients that kochia has not developed resistance to is one of the best ways to slow resistance development .

The list of herbicide resistant weeds is growingThe problem of herbicide-resistant weeds continues to grow . In Canada, we are dealing with weeds resistant to Group 1, 2, 4, 5 and 9 chemistry . This trend makes it even more important to use products with multiple modes of action to control the same weed – to reduce the risk of herbicide resistance .
