Substation Clamps

Regarding the conductor dimensions, the tolerances are of special importance as they influence the dimensional coordination of conductor to conductor groove. In the case of clamps for stranded conductors, the conductor structure normally adjusts to the clamp body which is of higher flexural stiffness.

It is important that before assembling the clamps the conductors and contact surfaces of the clamps are to be cleaned with a steel brush and greased immediately prior to assembly.

Application Pfisterer (Pty) Ltd manufactures and markets a compre-hensive range of aluminium substation clamps for use in all electrical conductor applications. These clamps are manufactured to the company’s own designs and/or to meet specific customer requirements.

Substation clamps are important components within a substation since they are an integral part of the current path. If the clamps are not properly designed, manu-factured and tested to operate under both normal and abnormal conditions, then the integrity of the whole power network may be compromised.

Quality Construction

The clamps in this catalogue are intended for substa-tions with stranded conductors. Their design, material and dimensions ensure connections that are capable of carrying continuous current and resisting short circuits throughout the operating life of the system without requiring any maintenance. Practical experience has shown that a high reliability of the clamps can only be attained by many years of experience and by constantly updating the clamp designs in compliance with the in-creasing system capacities.

Technical

All clamps in this catalogue are established designs, de-veloped on the basis of thorough tests and considera-tions, and many of these clamps have proved successful over decades. We are convinced that the installation of our clamps means a substantial contribution toward an increased operating safety and technical reliability. Cur-rent - carrying clamps are mainly used for making:

These applications require clamps of different basic con-struction (straight clamps, T-type clamps or flat clamps)For the selection of current - carrying clamps it is very important to know the continuous current and short circuit current ratings. In accordance with the respec-tive requirements, clamps with one or more covers are recommended. The clamps listed in this catalogue are designed for electrical and thermal loads under normal boundary conditions.

In the case of fittings intended for installations with op-erating voltages above 123 kV, the occurrence of prema-ture corona discharges must be avoided. Since the level of corona discharge inception voltage depends on the external radius, the clamp contour must be designed accordingly. Therefore the contours of our substation clamps are so designed as to exclude critical values of the surface field intensity at nominal voltage. The listed clamps are suitable for voltage levels from 145 kV to 420 kV.
