our heart and history
The Blessing Basket Project is different. The organization seeks to empower artisans to become entrepreneurs and leave the organization’s program.Using a unique Prosperity Wages® model, which the organization developed, artisans are carefully selected and remain in the program for approximately three years. While in the program, participants are required to start businesses. Once those businesses become successful, the artisan then graduates out of the organization’s program. The Blessing
Basket Project’s exclusive Artisan&You® program enables purchasers to meet the very artisan who created their hand crafted product. Through The Blessing Basket Project’s Artisan&You program customers can interact with the artisan who made their basket. They can see a photo of their artisan, learn about their family, write them a letter, and be informed every time they are paid. The Blessing Basket Project is an innovator and continues to set new standards in global poverty reduction.

Prior to joining The Blessing Basket Project® in Bangladesh, Majada
lived in extreme poverty. Our Prosperity Wages® model enabled her
to lease this land and plant rice. When asked what it felt like to know
she will never go hungry again, this was her reaction.

These women in Northern Ghana were all illiterate when we found
them. The Blessing Basket Project’s Prosperity Wages® model
enabled them to educate their daughters. Their daughters, in turn,
helped them learn to read and understand important documents
and how to sign their name.
Empowered, the women opened savings accounts, bought land
and live stock. Your purchase of Blessing Basket handmade baskets
from Ghana and around the world helps end illiteracy among girls,
empowering mothers and daughters to achieve sustainable financial
independence.

Our artsians in Indonesia use a traditional art form called batik. The
word “batik” comes from Javanese word ‘tritik’ meaning ‘printing in
wax’. This method of decorating has been practiced for centuries
in many Asian countries. The simple process is done by applying
hot liquid wax to fabric either drawn by hand or printed by hand
using a pattern block. The fabric is then dipped into a dye solution
– the waxed areas protect the cloth and the dye can only penetrate
the unprotected areas. The methods used in Indonesia are more
elaborate with successive waxing, dying and re-waxing to achieve
highly beautiful and intricate designs.

Madagascar
Madagascar’s forests are home to plants and animals found nowhere
else in the world. Forest areas that remain are being destroyed at
an alarming rate due to unsustainable human activity. The Missouri
Botanical Garden and The Blessing Basket Project® teamed up
to ensure that Artisans no longer over-use the forest to survive.
When you buy a Blessing Basket from Madagascar, you give forest
conservation efforts there a fighting chance.

Easy access to clean water is a serious challenge for most rural
Ugandan women. Blessing Basket® weaver Grace Nassale saw this as
a business opportunity. A government supplied water line ran through
her village, but it was inaccessible to those who truly needed it. The
Blessing Basket Project’s Prosperity Wages® model enabled Grace to
buy a metered tap on the water line. She now sells clean water to her
neighbors for a small profit. This is one of three sustainable sources
of income Grace generated for herself using her weaving income
putting her on the road to permanent financial independence.
