Take this book and follow me.I will show you a place not far awaywhere the land meets the water. Youwill know it when you see it: thewetland. A wetland usually remainswet all year long. It can be at the edgeof a river or lake, a marsh by the sea,or a swampy field. The water does nothave to be very deep to keep the landwet.

Take your time and quietly walkthrough the wetland, surprising frogsand flies. Look carefully for the tiniestgnat and the biggest heron. They arewaiting for you in the wetland.Remember to follow the trail.The wetland is very fragile and ishome to many creatures. Respect theirhome. Take only memories and leaveonly footprints.

At first you just see grasses.They are everywhere, all leaning in thewind. Individual plants are lost in thesea of grass, but look closer and touchthe different leaves.You will see that they are not all thesame. Some are round and hollow,others have triangular stems.Some leaves catch your finger whenyou feel the rough edge of the blade.Can you see any flowers or seeds?These are different too. They look likespikes, or burrs, or feathers.

Their roots trap mud and makefirm ground for other plants to growon. Last year's leaves die and sink intothe mud where they are eaten by tinyanimals and bacteria. The grass hidesmice and spiders who scurry away fromyour footsteps. What else does the grasshide?

Cattails like their roots to be coveredwith water. They stand long and tall like flagsmarking the deeper parts of the marsh. Theirflat blades fold down and turn brown in thewinter. Tight seed tails burst in early springand send fluffy seeds into the wind. Each seedlooks like a tiny cattail floating upside down.

Buttercup and wild parsley growaround cattails. Their leaves look alike fromfar away, but get closer and you can tell themapart. Buttercup leaves form a three-fingeredhand. Parsley branches like a straight tree.Insects crawl on and under their leaves.

Water striders chase each other on top of thewater's surface and dart after prey that cannot flyaway with wet wings. Young mosquitos hang upsidedown from the surface of the water. They breathe airthrough a tiny straw at their tail. Wave your handover them and they will wiggle deep into the watertrying to escape from your shadow. The caddisflylives under water for part of its life. It builds a houseout of bits and pieces found on the bottom.Dragonflies zip past, darting after flies. Their younglook like tiny swamp monsters. They crawl out of thewater on to a stem and the head expands to burstthrough the old shell. New wings unfold and thedragonfly zips off leaving an empty skeleton behind.If you look carefully, you might find a hollowmonster still clinging to a blade.

The yellowthroat sticks you up with hisbandit face and cries out "witchity-witchity-witch,"then he is gone in a flash of yellow. A Great BlueHeron unfolds thick gray wings. With a prehistoric"whonk!," she flies off to a quieter part of the marshto silently wait for fish to swim past her feet.A Green-winged Teal dips down to feed onunderwater plants. If you are not as still and quietas a heron, he will shoot up into the sky and flyaway.

A Greater Yellowlegs sneaks back into thegrass to wait for you to leave before she willcontinue to feed in the mud. A Sora pokes hishead out of the grass then quietly hides again.Only the Red-winged Blackbird loudly calls out,unafraid to let you know where he is. He fans histail and flashes his red patch to a blackbird onanother cattail. He sounds like a watery whistle.Can you hear him?

A deer browses on alder leaves. Mice andvoles make tunnels in thick grass roots.Coyotes prowl, slinking across open spaces.A muskrat turns cattails into a mounded nestand cuts through the water with his flattenedtail. Racoons wash their hands and food atthe water's edge. These animals disappearinto the colors of the wetland when you walkby. Can you find them? Do you see the grassthat was nibbled by the muskrat, or the tracksthe racoon left in the mud? Look closely, theyare out there in the wetland.

In April the frog song hurts yourears. Jelly masses of eggs cover thewater. A tiny black dot in each is theonly sign of the tadpole who will swimin May. A Painted Turtle lumbers outof the water. Claws grab hold ofunderwater roots and its neck strainsforward. A snake slips onto the waterand slides over it, fluid as a wave.

Peek under the thick grass. Themud underneath is cool even on a hotsummer day. Orange mites and tinysnails call this cold wet place home. It ishere where the decomposers live andrecycle dead plant material into grass,insects, and birds.

Oxygen cannot penetrate thewet mud, so most of the animalslive near the surface. Poke yourfinger into the cold. The top layer isblack and rich with nutrients. Whatdoes the mud smell like?

Peer into the water thatmakes the wetland wet and see thetiny plants and animals that livethere. Find a puddle or the edge ofa pond. Kneel down and get yournose wet. Look into the water,little animals swim all around.Do you see mites, copepods, andworms? Eggs, algae, and snails?Be patient and try to see the tiniestone possible. How does it move?How tiny is it?

The water of the wetland is hushed bywhispering grasses. Can you hear the faintsound of water gently seeping? You arestanding in a wetland. Look around. Whatelse do you hear? What can you see? Thereis water everywhere from heavy dewdropsto oceans.

Wade through the tall grass. Smell thecool, moist air. Listen for a bird to flap itswings as it flies away. Find a special placeto sit and watch, draw a picture, or white astory, then go home and share it withsomeone else. Tell them about the wetlandthat you found; what it looked like; what itfelt like when the wind rustled the thickreeds that you hid behind as you huntedlike a heron, long, silent, and still.
