3Our Clergy

Like every year, this year will be a special year of Temple programing. We are building on the legacy of our recent years when we celebrated kindness, wellness, our homeland in Israel, and the wonderful century of our Temple Sanctuary. These years have been a tremendous gift to all of us, a legacy of the Temple to its extended family. This year, 5777, we will be celebrating the very concept of “legacy.” We Jews live with an acute awareness of our past. We are an historic people with a unique covenant with God. We have given the world many gifts and we have blessed every country and community where we have dwelled. But we also live with an eye towards the future. As important as is our past, the future of the Jewish

people has always been our priority. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob — Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah; our prophets and sages, our mothers and fathers all devoted themselves to us, their future. Our goal as Jews living a Jewish life is that we build upon the past and live with our eyes firmly focused on the future. Like those who have come before us, we are commanded to be Jewish legacy builders. We build upon our past to make the future better and to make the world a better place for those who come after us. How do we create our legacy? Some of us are blessed with financial resources and can leave behind a legacy of financial resources. Others create a legacy with a dedication to tikkun olam and social justice. Other people create a legacy of integrity, kindness and living by Jewish values. And all of us should be able to create a legacy of love for our families, our values and our God. This year, I am proud to share a legacy of mine to you. With the help of a very special gift from Jerry Lapidus in memory of his beloved wife, Lillian, I have produced a book for the congregation. The book is entitled, Legacy, a Rabbi and a Community Remember Their Loved Ones. I have assembled a collection of eulogies I have delivered over my decades as your rabbi. The book will be offered to each member of our Temple Emanu-El family as a gift on Yom Kippur. In writing the book, I was drawn by the legacy of strength, generosity and love that each person remembered left behind in the aftermath of their lives. Some were outwardly great and noble. Others were quietly kind. Some lived lives of ease. Others lived with pain and endured more suffering than most people. But all the people left behind a legacy. They are remembered in the pages of this book. And they are remembered in our hearts and the heart of our Temple family. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are coming. We dwell on the past, our sins and errors and disappointments. But most of all, we look forward to a future of blessing and an opportunity to create and enhance our legacy to make the world better for us and our children. My wife Judi joins me in wishing each and every one of you a happy and healthy and blessed New Year!

Temple Emanu-El

Legacy by Rabbi MillerJust what do you say at a funeral? How do you sum up a life well-lived in a few short paragraphs? Rabbi Jonathan Miller of Temple Emanu-El in Birmingham, Alabama shares a recollection of ordinary people and his eulogies for them at the time of their death. The people remembered here were not famous. They were ordinary folks, like most of us. Brought together in a small Southern Jewish community, these ordinary people paint a picture of an extraordinary period and place in Jewish history. These remembrances will focus you on how to live your life better, appreciate the ones you love, and remember what is truly important about the life you live.

B'not MitzvahOctober 15Sydney JaffeSydney Jaffe will become a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, October 15. She is the daughter of Bob and Melissa Jaffe of Birmingham, Al, and an 8th grader at Oak Mountain Middle School where she is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and plays for the school's tennis and volleyball teams. For her Bat Mitzvah project, Sydney collected children's books and donated them to several charities.

October 22Rayna MastinRayna Mastin will become a Bat Mitzvah on October 22, 2016. Rayna lives in Mountain Brook with her parents, Michelle and Brian Mastin and her two younger brothers, Isaac (age 8) and Eli (age 7). Recently, her grandparents, Marilynn and Earl Rothstein moved to Birmingham to be close to them and they have been critical in the planning and preparation for her big day. Being close with her family ranks very high in her list of priorities. Rayna attends Mountain Brook Junior High and enjoys school. When not studying, Rayna plays competitive soccer and runs Cross Country. She loves staying active and busy. While Rayna does not definitively know what she wants to do for her career when she grows up, she is considering a future career as an attorney. Rayna enjoys taking care of other people and has a passion for making sure that all people have access to their basic needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter. As a result, her Mitzvah project involves volunteering her time with Collat Jewish Family Services with their food pantry as well as other volunteer aspects within the organization. In addition, given Rayna’s love for her family and hope that everyone can have access to the things in life they desire, she is planning on making a donation to the Alexander Muss High School in Israel to benefit future students who desire to study in Israel, when their families might not be able to afford them that opportunity. Please come help us celebrate Rayna’s Simcha and join us for services on this day.

My Experience in Israel this SummerI am grateful I was able to participate in the NFTY L’Dor V’dor trip this summer. The trip is designed to place participants in various settings to better learn about Jewish history by walking through it. The trip was five weeks long; the first week was spent in Europe going from Prague to Krakow to Warsaw to learn about Jewish life before and during the Holocaust, and the next four weeks were spent in Israel learning about its foundation, culture, and history before establishment. In Europe, I expected the trip to center around Holocaust education. While we did visit concentration camps and ghettos learning about the atrocities committed against our people, we also focused on the thriving Jewish communities in Europe right now. We celebrated our first Shabbat with the Reform Jewish community in Krakow, Poland who, due to the lack of a synagogue where they could practice, held services in a town square in the middle of the Jewish quarter. We danced with the community to prayers and melodies with which we were familiar, and we saw how thrilled the clergy were to have us join them. It was an amazing Shabbat that showed me that no matter where I was in the world, I was part of a Jewish community. In Israel, we stayed in hostels, hotels, and kibbutzim all across the country. We even spent four days in the Negev desert hiking and camping under the stars. The most meaningful experience I had there was on the last day. We were staying in Jerusalem, and hours before we boarded the bus to the airport, we visited the Western Wall. We had visited the Wall a few weeks earlier in the trip, but this time we visited the Egalitarian part of the Western Wall, a section of the wall that allows all genders to pray together. Filled with emotions about going home later that day, we all gathered together against the wall. In a huddle of girls and boys, old friends and new friends, campers and counselors, we each had one hand on the wall and one hand on each other. In that moment, I knew I had experienced the Holy Land, and I began to cry while praying to myself. To say that this trip changed my life and enhanced my Jewish identity is an understatement, and I couldn’t be more grateful to the Birmingham Jewish Federation, The Dream of Israel Fund of the Birmingham

Jewish Foundation and the Temple Emanu-El Endowment Fund for helping to make it possible.

"Magnificent. . . Inspiring . . .

A True Legacy"… these are just a few of the

words describing our “Klezmer Shabbat Service” and celebration

on August 26, honoring the establishment of the Ruth & Marvin

Engel Cantorial Chair by the Engel family to ensure that we

are always able to have a cantorial position to serve our congregation.

We would like to express special thanks to Cantor Jessica Roskin for her creativity and foresight of

commissioning this beautiful Shabbat service, to Dr. Alan Goldspiel for brilliantly creating this body of work, and to Dr. Paul Mosteller

for magnificently orchestrating the choir and ensemble. Special thanks

once again to the Joan & Milton Jacobson Cultural Arts Fund and

the temple staff for the lovely oneg following. The entire evening

was truly an inspiration.
