THE PROBLEMMy design problem is that there is not nearly enough out there for athletes with diabetes. There is alot more about Type 2 Diabetes. Although there are some Type 1 Diabetes tools out there, there are not any that focus solely on the athletes facing the challenges of Type 1 Diabetes.

RESEARCH QUESTIONSWhat statistics and information can most effectively raise awareness and educate people about youth and athletes with type 1 diabetes, while making them want to support the cause?

How can we create better products that are specifically for these youth and athletes? What will these products be?

How can these athletes and people that have been dealing with the disease for years help youth that have been newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes?

Telling stories of people who have the disease and have overcome adversity. How will these be presented?

INFLUENCEMy influence for this project is my little brother Kevin. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabtes at age 14. He is now 19 and is a Division 1 football player at Youngstown State University. Although the past few years have been filled with challenges, he has overcome them all with little to no complaints and has become a huge role model for me. He is an example of how it is still possible to fulfill your dreams after being diagnosed with this horrible disease. My goal is for there to be more resources for children that have been diagnosed and athletes like him that make managing this disease easier.

PROJECT OBJECTIVESMy goal is for there to be more resources for children that have been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and athletes like my brother that make managing this disease easier. I want to create a resource that is designed specifically for their needs. My anticipated effect is that more children that are diagnosed with the disease will see the possiblity of still becoming a successful athlete.

Page 13: Process Book for Senior Thesis Project

TARGET AUDIENCEMy target audience is children that have just been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and current athletes that have already been diagnosed with the disease but would want an easier way of managing their diabetes.

BRAINSTORMING While brainstorming at the beginning of the project, I thought of three diffrernt design routes. I sketched out ideas for poster series, infographics and an app.

Page 19: Process Book for Senior Thesis Project
Page 20: Process Book for Senior Thesis Project

COLLECTD IMAGERY I collected these images with the original intent to use them for my poster series. Although, as my project progressed I collected images for certain uses such as each category of my app.

RESEARCHI researched alot of sports design and current diabetes graphics that inspired me. I looked at which ones were more effective than others and which ones could be improved.

Page 30: Process Book for Senior Thesis Project
Page 31: Process Book for Senior Thesis Project

RESEARCHWhile researching for my project I found alot of infographics about diabetes like these that helped me envision where my designs could potentially go. I documented the ones that were portraying the information most effectively and tried to look to them in order to use similar visual tactics that they did.

RESEARCH WITHIN THE FIELDI researched Type 1 Diabetes extensively to find out what information is already out there. Websites and organizations such as JDRF, the American Diabetes Association and sportsMD provided the most beneficial information. I already knew alot about Type 1 Diabetes going into this project but alot of the statistics and other information still caught me by surprise. This research helped me get a better understanding of what exactly it is that athletes with Type 1 Diabetes need.

Page 37: Process Book for Senior Thesis Project

RELATED PROJECTS There are other Type 1 Diabetes organizations out there such as Lilly Diabetes, Team Type 1, and JDRF. Although they are all extremely successful, none of these combine diabetes and all types of athletes. Team Type 1 is the closest because it really does focus on the diabetic athlete but the only athletic sport they promote it cycling. Lilly Diabetes features different famous diabetic athletes such as Sean Busby but it does not provide the resources for these athletes.

INITIAL CONCEPTSWhen I finalized what I wanted my final product to be, I sketched out some inital conepts for what I wanted the app, wireframing and infographic to look like and consist of.

VISUAL EXPLORATION AND EXPERIMENTATIONWhen starting the design and execute phase of the project, I knew that I needed to start with designing the logo. I had my name picked out (Type 1, Division 1) therefore I wanted to find a way to incorporate both of these. I wanted to incoporate the “D” and the “1” both into the logo because for me it stood for “Diabetes Type 1” and “Division 1”. I started with sketches but at this stage came up with these diffrent approaches for deciding on my final logo.

Page 45: Process Book for Senior Thesis Project

VISUAL EXPLORATION AND EXPERIMENTATIONWhen it came to my color scheme, I wanted the colors tobe reflective of the theme of my project. I started out with looking at colors that are typically associated with sports. I experimented with multiple combinations and tints. My goal was to have the color scheme reflect the sports and the medical side of my project.

DESIGN METHODOLOGYAt the beginning of my design process, I started outwith the idea of having a poster series as my final outcome. I experiemented with several different layouts and images. I didn’t end up using any of these images or posters in the end but this process is what helped me acheive my final outcome.

Page 49: Process Book for Senior Thesis Project

DESIGN METHODOLOGYStill at the beginning of my design process, one of my initial ideas was to create an energy drink that would be created specifically for athletes with Type 1 Diabetes. As time went on, I did find that actually creating this product was not a tangible goal for this semester. Although, I envisioned a company such as Gatorade partnering with Type 1, Division 1 in order to make this energy drink become a reality.

Page 50: Process Book for Senior Thesis Project

DESIGN METHODOLOGYOriginally, I thought the solution to my problem would be to create a series of posters to act as a campaign for Type 1Diabetes. As time went on, I realized that this was not the best solution. Although I had no previous experience with any app design, I thought that this would be the mosteffective solution for my problem. I decided that an app would acheive everything that I wanted it to. These are the first screens I created for the app.

FEEDBACK FROM CRITIQUES AND RESULTS OF TESTINGThe feedback I received from all of the critiques improved my project tremendously. Color changes was one of the biggest suggestions. The overall opinion was that the yellow was not complementing the rest of the colors within the app. Another large suggestion was getting rid of the shadowson parts of the app screens. I started off using FuturaCondensed as my typeface but it was recommended in a critique to change this to Futura Regular.

REFINEAfter receiving constructive criticism on some changes that should be made, I made these design changes and revisions that helped the overall aesthetic. These are the screens before and after the recommendations.

WIREFRAMINGI designed the wireframing for my app so that it would be easier for the audience to see how the app functions and the purpose of each category within the app. I provided a key so that the actions and functions of each screen would be easily identifiable.

INFOGRAPHICI wanted to include an infographic within my exhibit that would explain the differences between Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes. I designed the infogaphic so that theaudience can clearly understand the difference between the two. I also included the symptoms of the disease and a blood sugar chart in order to further the understanding of the viewer.

Page 67: Process Book for Senior Thesis Project

POSTER SERIESI designed this poster series in order to promote the app as well as inspire its viewers. Cory Conacher, Sean Busby, and Jay Cutler are all success stories that I want to inspire those who have recently been diagnosed with the disease. I want these posters to serve the purpse of showing younger aspiring athletes that anything is possible, especially with dedication, determination and devotion.

APP VIDEOI created a video in order to showcase the app and how it is supposed to function. I included explanations for each section so that the app would be more comprehendable and easier to follow.

REFLECTIONThis semester was a huge learning experience. This project taught me how to create restrictions without being given them ahead of time. I learned how to self-mange and create guidelines and timelines for myself to abide by. Although I am happy with the final product, looking back there are a lot of things I would go back and change. I would consider approaching the topic from a different angle. I would have liked to have been able to expand on even more areas. I would now consider having a broader target audienceincluding parents of children recently diagnosed and designing to reach all of the target audience. I learned countless new skills while designing this project this semester. I had never had any experience with designing an app or a prototype that allowed you to navigate through the screens without coding. It was not something I set out to initially include in my project but it challeneged me for the better more than any other portion of my project. I now have these skills that I can apply to different projects as well as any fu-ture jobs. Overall, this semester was an exceptional learning experience for me.
