PROBUS CLUB OF CLARINGTON President’s Message for November
TherearefourbigreasonswhyyoushouldbeatourmeeEngNov.7!
WewouldliketohaveagoodturnouttovoteonthebylawchangerequiredtocompleteourplanformovingtoHopeFellowshipChurchinJanuary.ThebylawchangeisnecessarybecauseourmeeSngdaywillbechangingfromthefirsttothesecondWednesdayofthemonth.(Seemoredetailonthisamendment,page6.)Specifically,weneedatwothirdsmajorityofourmembersina]endancetoapprovethechange.Comeoutandvote.
ThiswillbeourlastmeeSngintheSalvaSonArmyFacility.ItfeelslikethisrepresentstheendofourfirstchapterasanorganizaSon.Comeandjoinustocelebratethismilestone.Asavital,growingorganizaSonwithenthusiasScmembersandpopularsocialacSviSes,wehavealottocelebrate.
Aspreviouslyannounced,sincetheupcomingmeeSngwillbethelastattheSalvaSonArmyfacility,theexecuSveisencouragingourmemberstomakeacontribuSontotheSalvaSonArmyattheNovembermeeSng.(SeeP.4forwaysyoucanhelp.)
Last,andmostcertainlynotleast,youshouldcometohearourspeaker.Ma]AndersonhasbeenPresidentandCEOofLakeridgeHealthfortwoyears.HehasastellarreputaSon.HewillbeoutliningplansforLakeridgeHealthwithparScularemphasisontheBowmanvillehospitalexpansion.I’msurethisisatopicofgreatinteresttoourmembers.ComeandhearMa].HehasareputaSonasadynamicspeaker.
OnOctober23,Anne-MarieandIparScipatedinthefirstClaringtonProbuscarrally.Wehadneverdonethisbeforeanddidn’tknowwhattoexpect.Wefoundourselvesfollowingwri]eninstrucSonstofollowawindingroute(andanswerquesSonsaboutpointsofinterestalongtheway)throughruralpartsofClaringtonandNorthumberland.Wehadablast!Itwaslikeascavengerhuntonwheels.Intotalwedrovejustovertwohoursand100km(notcounSngoneSmewemissedacriScalturnduetotheina]enSonofournavigator-me),andacerwardsall14teams(29ofusintotal)hadlunchattheSnuginNewcastle.ThisisoneofthemostfunthingswehaveeverdoneinProbus!Ireallywishthatevenmoreofourmembershadhadtheopportunitytoenjoythis.IencourageeveryonetoconsiderjoininginmoreofouracSviSeslikethis.Forexample,considercomingtooneofourgamesnights,oramovienight,orpotluckdinner,oranyofmyriadotheropportuniSestogettogetherasagroupandhavefun.HavingfuntogetherisabigpartofwhatPROBUSisallabout.

November Guest Speaker: Matthew Anderson, Lakeridge Health President & CEO
Ma]hasbeenworkinginhealthcaresince1992.HerosequicklytoleadershipposiSons,becomingChiefInformaSonOfficerofUniversityHealthNetwork(UHN)in1998.
In2000,hebecameaVicePresidentatUHNandin2004wasnamedoneofCanada'sTop40under40bytheGlobeandMail.
In2008,Ma]wasnamedCEOoftheTorontoCentralLocalHealthIntegraSonNetwork(LHIN).In2010,hebecameCEOofWilliamOsler-overseeinga$655millionbudget,5200full-Smeandpart-Smestaffand850physiciansinahospitalsystemofmorethan850beds.
Ma]becamePresidentandCEOofLakeridgeHealthinNovember2016.
Ma]andhiswifehavelivedinBrooklinfor15yearsandtheyhavethreechildren.

PROBUS Profile: Eleanor Zadlo, Membership Chair
EleanorZadlowasbornElenoraHarlozinskiinPoland.ShecametoCanadawhenshewasjustshyofthreeyearsold.EleanorisfiercelyproudofherPolishheritage.ShegrewupinHamiltonandgraduatedwithherChildandYouthWorkerDiplomafromMohawkCollegeattheageof19andbeganhercareerofcaringforothersatthatSme.
EleanorworkedatatreatmentcentreforemoSonallychallengedyouthfortwoyears.ShewasthenhiredasachildyouthworkerwithTorontoChildren’sAidSociety,whereshefiguredshewouldalsoremainfortwoyears,butfinishedhercareerthereacer37years.Duringthosefirstfewyearsworkingshicsinthegrouphome,EleanorwenttonightschooltogetherBAinPsychology.Thiswasnotaneasytask,butithelpedmovehercareerthroughouttheAgency.ShemovedtovariousposiSons,aswellasteachingpartSmeatCentennialCollegeintheChildandYouthWorkerProgram.Eleanor’sfinalposiSonattheAgencywassupervisingtwoteamsofworkerswhosupervisedvisitaSonandaccessvisitswithchildrenincare,andtheirbiologicalfamilies.

BeforetherewasthePROBUSClubofClarington,therewasalotofsupportandhardworkfromneighbouringPROBUSclubs.BeforeourinauguralmeeSngonApril6,2016,therewerefiveplanningmeeSngsandmuchworkdonetobringtheClubtoofficialstatusasaPROBUSClubofCanada.
ThefirstmeeSngtookplaceinNovember2015.A]endeeswerefromOshawaPROBUS,Whitby/BrooklinPROBUSandinterestedpeoplefromPortPerry,andClaringtonBowmanvilleareas.
BobAshdown,foundingpresidentofWhitbyBrooklin,andLorraineVeroba,foundingpresidentofOshawa,co-chairedthemeeSngsandbecametheSteeringCommi]eechairsoftwonewclubsinsteadofone.AsaresultoftheterrificinterestfrombothClaringtonandPortPerryareas,thesetwonewclubswereestablishedin2016.ClaringtonwassponsoredbyOshawaandPortPerrybyWhitbyBrooklin.
AhugethankyougoesouttothemanypeoplewhosteppedforwardtotakeonthedevelopmentofthesenewclubsincludingpeoplefromOshawa-JimMurray,RonAllen,Be]yDubowski,ErnieVallee,ArtVeroba,FrankKelcey,MoidaWheller,MaureenFowler,JudithSpring,Marg&RodMillerandWhitby/Brooklin–RussCaple,KarenMarSn,TrudySemenuk,ValRandall,Denis&PatriciaBailey.MargMillerandPatriciaandDenisBayleytookonPublicityforbothclubs.
CarlaFooteandLuciaKzanoskitookontheroleofMembershipforClaringtonsincenameswerepouringinassoonaspublicitybegan.Therewasan
amazingresponsetoallExecuSveposiSons.
AllofthisamazinghardworkanddedicaSonpaidoff.AtourinauguralmeeSngwehad118members.Nowthatournumbershaveswelledtoover150,andwe’veoutgrownourmeeSngvenue,itseemedlikeagreatSmetothankeveryoneinvolvedfortheirencouragement,alongwiththeirideasandexperSse.

HELP WANTED! When we move to Hope Fellowship Church in
January, we’ll need volunteers to help set up and take down tables before and after meetings.
We’ll also need people to help run the AV system during meetings. Training provided.
