Anne Louise Germaine de Staël-Holstein (1766–1817), commonly known as Madame de Staël, was a French woman of letters of Swiss origin who gained a reputation for her lively wit and intellectual curiosity. After the French Revolution, she gathered round her a considerable number of writers, philosophers, scientists, politicians, musicians, and artists in order to exchange ideas and expand their knowledge at her salons de conversation, which were held at Le Château de Coppet for more than 25 years. Celebrated for her conversational eloquence, she participated actively in the political and intellectual life of her times.
