Print Quality General InformationThe Lexmark C760 provides outstanding print qualityand feed reliability when using paper designed for usewith xerographic copiers and laser printers. During thelife of the printer, components are subject to wear basedon usage. Printers continuously operating at or near themaximum duty cycle may require replacement ofcomponents to ensure high-quality printing and goodperformance throughout the life of the printer.

Customer-replaceable maintenance items arerecommended every 200,000 pages for the fuser and120,000 pages for the Image Transfer Unit.

Automatic CalibrationThe C760 performs an automatic calibration under thefollowing conditions.• At power-on• After 8 hours of power saver• Approximately every 500 pages• After changing a print cartridge• After changing an intermediate transfer unit

A manual calibration can be initiated by selecting “ColorAdjust” from the “Color” menu.

Resolution• 1200 x 1200 dpi • 4800 color quality

Toner DarknessToner darkness settings offer five (5) user-selectablesettings to balance print darkness and toner savings.The higher the setting, the darker the print. The tonerdarkness default setting is 4. Color level 4 and level 5are the same when printing in color.

The toner darkness setting is available through theoperator panel under the “Color” menu or through theLexmark C760 PostScript driver.

Black & White LockThis feature allows printer and network administrators to“lock” the C760 printers in a mode that will only printblack & white with the ITU disengaged. This feature cannot be overridden with any other menu or driverselection. “Black and White Lock” is located under theSetup Menu.

Print PermissionsPrint Permissions allows customers to configure theC760 to only print color for certain approved networkuser IDs. MarkVision will host a utility that allows ITadministrators to enter user ID exceptions to normalprinting function. User ID specific permissions areentered and stored in the printer. They can be updatedat any time and as many times as customers wish. Thelist is limited to 100 user ID’s per printer. The list isintended to be an exceptions list. If, for example, normaluse allows color printing for most people, the list can beused to exclude certain users from color printing.

Possibly users who have been identified as abusers ofcolor or users who clearly have no business need toprint color. Conversely, normal usage could be no colorprinting and the list is used to allow color printing forselect users who have demonstrated a business need toprint color.

Color Correction



There are different color correction settings to provideflexibility in choosing the type of color correction to beapplied when printing a file.• Auto (default) – applies different color correction to

each object (image, fill, text) on the printed page,depending upon how the color for each object isspecified (RGB, CMYK, CIE, etc.)

• Off – no color correction is implemented.• Manual – allows users to customize color correction

output from the Operator Panel. The setting isselectable from the driver.

Vivid – applies a color correction algorithm thatproduces brighter, more saturated colors. Maybe selected for all incoming color formats.

sRGB Display – applies color correction toproduce output that approximates the colorsdisplayed on a computer monitor.

sRGB Vivid – increases color saturation for thesRGB display color correction

RGB Off – no color correction is implemented. US CMYK – applies color correction to

approximate SWOP color output. Vivid CMYK – increases color saturation for the

US CMYK color correction CMYK Off – no color correction is

implemented. Euro CMYK – applies color correction to

approximate EuroScale color output.

Color Balance ControlThe C760 offers a Color Balance Control that is a colorcorrection option allowing the user to increase ordecrease the amount of toner going to the pageindividually for the cyan, magenta, yellow and black colorplans. The scale for the adjustments is +5 to –5.

ColorSaverTM ModeThe C760 offers a ColorSaver Mode that allows endusers to print images and graphics lighter. Text will printat Toner Darkness “4” while images and graphics print atToner Darkness “1”. The ColorSaver Mode is located onthe operator panel under the Color Menu and may beselected from the Lexmark Custom PostScript driver.

Coverage EstimatorThe Lexmark Coverage Estimator is designed to give anapproximation of percent coverage per color whenprinting a composite color document. The estimation of

coverage can be used to calculate an approximate costof any given document if yield and coverage areassumed to be linear and inversely related. This toolshould allow customers to discover that printing colordocuments on color laser printers is frequently aneconomical way to create these documents. They candiscover that many black and white documents can beimproved for a nominal increase in cost.

The Coverage Estimator allows end users to estimatethe percent coverage of cyan, magenta, yellow andblack on a page. The estimates will be printed on thepage. The Coverage Estimator is available from theoperator panel under the utility menu.

The Coverage Estimator utilizes an algorithm that countspixels for each toner color: black, cyan, magenta andyellow. Once the utility is selected, the printer overlaysthe percent coverage on every printed page. The printedpercentages are not included in the estimate. The utilitycan be turned off by deselecting it from the menu or bypowering off.

The Coverage Estimator is intended to only estimate thecoverage on a given page. For all toner colors that areused, the minimum percentage reported will be twopercent. Reported values may vary from printer toprinter. The accuracy of the estimates may be affectedby the fullness of the print cartridges, environmentalconditions, media type, application, application settings,driver, driver settings, and the content of the page.Lexmark makes no claim as to the accuracy of theestimated percents.

Color and Black Printer ControlsThe C760 offers several controls that allow the user oradministrator to direct the preferred output to be color orblack.• Driver – provides the option to print a color job in

black. Printing in color is the default setting. Ablack driver is provided that will allow printer ornetwork administrators to limit the printing of someworkstations to black only.

• Operator Panel



Print Mode – allows users to print a color jobin black by selecting “Black and White” fromthe menu. Black and White or Color (default)may be selected. The operator panelselections are ignored when using a LexmarkC760 driver for Windows.

Printer Usage – modes are set to control thestarting position of the Intermediate TransferUnit (ITU) and how printer software controls itsposition, depending on the color content of theprint job, the Lexmark C760 driver or “PrintMode” selection (selection are max speed andmax yield (default setting)). “Printer Usage”is in the Setup Menu. Processing a significantnumber of black pages with the ITU engagedmay reduce the life of color photoconductorsand may affect the ultimate life of the colorprint cartridges (the photoconductor is anintegral part of the cartridge). Maximum printspeed is obtained when the driver and printmode are set to color (default settings) andprinter usage is set to maximum speed. Anyother selections can reduce throughput,depending on job content and the selection. Ittakes approximately one second to lower theImage Transfer Unit and approximately sixseconds to raise it.

Black and White Lock – (in setup menu) allowsnetwork administrators to lock the Lexmark C760 printerin a mode that will only print black with the ITUdisengaged. This feature cannot be overridden with anyother menu or driver selection.

SetupThe Lexmark C760 printers and options are designed foreasy setup by the customer. Documentation shipped with each printer contains allinstructions needed for setting up and using the printer,

in the U.S. The utilities can be used to install drivers,download soft fonts, program flash and install screenfonts. Installation of most printer options is covered inthe User’s Guide. The Technical Reference is available



from the Lexmark Web site. A link for web-based printerregistration is provided on the CD.

A power cord is included with the printer. A systemattachment cable must be purchased separately.

PaperFollowing are media guidelines for successful printing:

• Rough, highly textured, limp or pre-curled paperswill result in lower print quality and more frequentpaper feed failures.

• Colored papers must be able to withstand 338 deg.F (170 deg. C) fusing temperature.

• Preprinted forms and letterhead must be able towithstand 338 deg. F (170 deg. C) fusingtemperature and should be selected usingguidelines found in the printer User’s Guide. Thechemical process used in preprinting may rendersome papers unsuitable.

• Unsuitable papers include multipart forms anddocuments; chemically treated papers; coated,synthetic and thermal papers; A5 paper less than21 lb. (80 g/m2); recycled paper less than 20 lb. (75g/m2); and preprinted papers requiring a highdegree of registration.

• Recycled paper less than 21 lb. (80 g/m2) maycause unacceptable results.

Envelopes• All envelopes should be new, unused and without

package damage

• Envelopes with excessive curl or twist exceeding0.20 in. (5 mm), stuck together, with bent cornersor nicked edges or those that interlock should notbe used.

• Minimum weight: 16 lb. (60 g/m2) for the MFP only

• The following envelopes should not be used: Envelopes with windows, holes, perforations,cutouts, deep embossing or package damage

Additional fonts can be downloaded to the printer RAM,optional Flash Card or hard disk. PCL emulationsupports both scalable and bitmapped downloadablefonts. PostScript emulation supports onlydownloadable scalable fonts. Font DIMMs and fontcartridges are not supported.

The Lexmark C760 fonts for PCL 6 are compatible withthe HP 4600 fonts. The PCL fonts also include nineadditional fonts and many extra symbol sets to supportextra languages and applications.

The fonts in the PostScript emulation are compatiblewith Adobe PostScript 3 and include 20 additional fontsin addition to the Adobe PostScript 3 fonts.

Included on the CD shipped with the printer are a varietyof downloadable fonts for Hebrew and Arabic.

Also included on the CD is the FontVision FontManagement utility and screen fonts to match theresident scalable fonts.

The Lexmark C760 printers have UTF-8 code supportstandard. UTF-8 code is a particular way in which fontsare accessed. UTF-8 is available for PCL andPostScript fonts.

Optra Forms is supported with the Lexmark C760printers using the Forms 16MB and 32MB Flash Cardsor Forms hard disk. • Optra Forms Director -- a Windows NT or

Windows 2000 server-based program. Using noadditional host software (AS/400, UNIX ormainframe), the host application sends the printspool file to a Windows NT or Windows 2000 printqueue. Optra Forms Director Serviceautomatically parses the print spool file into singleor multiple jobs using Microsoft Visual Basic Scriptor JScript methods and Named Pipes. The spoolfile, which may contain many individual documents,is customized by separating it into individual jobsor adding data or particular commands todocuments that are sent to IP, LPR or Windowsprinter destinations. The additional data orcommands may be to staple, separate documentswith a cover page, copy and collate, print on bothsides, offset stack, fax or hole punch eachindividual job. Print jobs are customized and

The Bar Code Card generates bar codesalgorithmically. The Lexmark Bar Code Cardemulates HP printers with an HP Barcodes&MoreCartridge/SIMM/DIMM or a JetCAPS®

BarSIMM®/BarDIMM® (v. 2.0b) installed forcompatibility with existing bar code applicationsusing HP/JetCAPS solutions.

• Lexmark ImageQuickTM Card -- enables theLexmark C760 laser printers to print TIFF, GIF,JPEG, PNG, BMP, PCX, DCX, HTML files or URLsreferencing PDF or HTML files directly to theprinter quickly and easily without using a driver.The Drag’N’Print Utility is included and can beused to create URL bookmarks or to print theseobjects directly.

• Lexmark PrintCryptionTM Card for C760 –enables the Lexmark C760 laser printers with astandard Ethernet connection to decrypt ad printdata that has been encrypted using the AESRijndael encryption algorithm. This function issupported over a direct TCP/IP port for mainframesusing Levi, Ray and Shoup’s VPS withVPS/Secure 8.0 and a command line utility withIBM AIX (4.3 and 5.0), HP-UX (11.00), Sun Solaris(7, 8, 9) and Linux (Red Hat 7 and 8, Caldera 3.1and SuSE 8). Secure printing for MicrosoftWindows and Apple Mac OS X is provided througha driver while using a Lexmark Network PrinterMonitor port.

• Lexmark C760 Card for PRESCRIBE – enablesthe Lexmark C760 printer to understand printerand data formatting instructions sent inPRESCRIBE commands. PRESCRIBE is a printerprogramming language used and promoted byKyocera. This is a migration tool to allowcontinuation of use of applications withPRESCRIBE commands while transitioning tostandard printer programming languages likePostScript or PCL.

• Lexmark C760 Card for IPDS and SCS/TNe The Lexmark C760 Card for IPDS and SCS/TNe

provides AFP/IPDS and SCS(LU1) data streamsupport with Lexmark C760 printers for IBMmainframe and AS/400 computers. The Card forIPDS and SCS/TNe allows customers to printAFP/IPDS and SCS documents over TCP/IP to LANprinters.
