The Solano Community College Nursing Program has been given the

opportunity by our program affiliate Kaiser Permanente to offer to our campus

the national initiative “STOP The BLEED”. As nursing faculty, we believe in

assisting and educating not only prospective new nurses, but the community in

which we serve. The Stop the Bleed program provides bystanders the tools and

knowledge to stop life-threatening bleeding while waiting for first

responders. While we hope to never have to experience a situation on our

campus where these skill may be needed, the knowledge that you will be able to

render assistance in an emergency is invaluable. Please join us on January

10th

from 9am to 11 am for this 2 hour Flex-Cal activity and learn how you may

save a life. Please register by Dec 14th, though EventBrite

GUIDED PATHWAYS WORKSHOP: AREAS OF EMPHASIS AND FIRST-YEAR

PLANNING

PRESENTERS: LANAE JAIMEZ AND MICHAEL WYLY

As we make progress in the development of a vision for Guided Pathways at

Solano, it is time to consider presenting our many programs in ways which make

more sense to our incoming students. Considerations include how recent program

subcommittees, Administration, and any other interested participants will

participate in a workshop to initiate key conversations regarding the development

of areas of emphasis (aka metamajors) at Solano. Together, we will work to

frame an initial draft to be shared broadly with the campus community. This

transformative work will inform Guided Pathways and First Year Experience

planning for Spring 2019, as well as the 2019-2020 Academic Year.

EQUITY, ECONOMIC MOBILITY & GUIDED PATHWAYS: THE CASE FOR

URGENCY AND IMPLEMENTATION

PRESENTER: DR. ROB JOHNSTONE

Our best efforts by our best people to significantly

improve community college completion rates

haven't produced the scaled improvements in

outcomes we’ve desired - especially for the

students we most hope to serve. During this

session, we'll explore how to build on our past

efforts and evolve our thinking about how

students are recruited to, enter, and progress through our colleges so they complete

their goals at markedly higher rates. We will begin by setting the table for an

exploration of guided pathways by focusing on the issues of economic mobility and

equity. This session will integrate Dr. Johnstone’s work on the AACC Pathways

Initiative, the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, Completion by

Design, NCII’s A2I2 Cohort Beyond Financial Aid, JFF’s Student Success Centers,

and numerous other national, state and college-level projects.

GUIDED PATHWAYS DEMYSTIFIED: EXPLORING THE KEY TRANSITIONS IN

GUIDED PATHWAYS AND COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT GUIDED PATHWAYS

PRESENTER: DR. ROB JOHNSTONE

Dr. Rob Johnstone of NCII wrote Guided Pathways Demystified I in 2015 to address

ten excellent questions faculty, student services practitioners and administrators alike

were asking about the Guided Pathways movement. In 2017, as the movement

gained momentum, the questions had shifted to include less theoretical and more

practical questions about designing and implementing guided pathways. NCII

released Guided Pathways Demystified II in Fall 2017 to address ten new

questions. In this lively and interactive session, we will explore the twenty

questions, starting by crowdsourcing participants’ top questions to explore more

deeply.

PARADIGM SHIFTING TOWARD JUSTICE

LECTURE AND BOOK SIGNING

PRESENTER: DR. MAISHA WINN

Maisha T. Winn is the Chancellor’s Leadership Professor in the School of Education at the University of California, Davis, and co-director of the Transformative Justice in

Education Center.

For information on her latest book, go to http://hepg.org/hep-home/books/justice-on-both-sides

Restorative justice represents “a paradigm shift in the way Americans

conceptualize and administer punishment,” says author Maisha T. Winn, from a

focus on crime to a focus on harm, including the needs of both those who were

harmed and those who caused it. Her book, Justice on Both Sides, provides an

urgently needed, comprehensive account of the value of restorative justice and

how contemporary schools can implement effective practices to address

inequalities associated with race, class, and gender. Winn, a restorative justice

practitioner and scholar, draws on her extensive experience as a coach to school

leaders and teachers to show how indispensable restorative justice is in

understanding and addressing the educational needs of students, particularly

disadvantaged youth. Justice on Both Sides makes a major contribution by

demonstrating how this actually works in schools and how it can be integrated

into a range of educational settings. It also emphasizes how language and

labeling must be addressed in any fruitful restorative effort. Ultimately, Winn

makes the case for restorative justice as a crucial answer, at least in part, to the

unequal practices and opportunities in American schools.

UC Davis Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences Sarah T. Stewart won a

of solar system formation give birth to planets and their natural satellites, like the

Earth and Moon.

Before joining the UC Davis faculty in 2014, Dr. Stewart taught at Harvard

University for 11 years. At UC Davis, she directs the Shock Compression

20TH ANNIVERSARY LIGHTING CEREMONY OF SCC WOOD-FIRE KILN

PRESENTER: MARC LANCET

Come Join In Around the Fire!

This Spring firing of the Rocinante Wood Kiln celebrates our 20th Anniversary

of the Wood-fired Ceramics Program at Solano Community College; a program

which has become known world-wide.

Begin your Flex-Cal day on Wednesday March 13, 2019 at 9 am and help us

start the fire with a beautiful lighting ceremony which includes elements from

ancient Shinto traditions and contemporary California practices. All are welcome

to come be a part of the ceremony that gets us started. The firing continues as we

feed wood into the kiln every few minutes 24 hours a day until three days later –

Friday evening March 30th. The ceremony will run from 9am to 10 am.

You can choose to stay kiln side or return during the three day firing to observe

the students’ progress. Come visit us and see our students working very hard

together to create works of great beauty, learning the values of collaboration and

leadership along the way. We are here in the sculpture/ceramics yard of the 1300

building 24 hours a day Wednesday through Friday.

Bring your class, bring a friend, come and witness this remarkable 1000 year old

traditional ceramic firing technique. Witness this tri-annual reenactment of

eleventh century ceramics techniques. If you would like to bring a class on a

quick or extended field trip and would like my students and I to speak to your

class or even involve them in a quick hands on clay exercise, call and leave a

message (530)574-8008 or e-mail Marc Lancet.

Many classes have visited in the past from Solano and as far away as Oakland’s

California College of Art, BYU of Idaho and Gillingham School from Dorset,

England. Make a point during your busy day or in the evening after your work

day, to stroll over and view this unique firing process and see our students deeply

engaged in learning about art and leadership one stick of wood at a time.
