How much less this temple I have built! 2 Chronicles 6:18 Teen Challenge, a ministry to at-risk youth that started in New York City, was born from an unusual commitment to prayer. Its founder, David Wilkerson, sold his television set and spent his TV-watching time (two hours each night) praying. In the months that followed, he not only gained clarity about his new endeavor but he also learned about the balance between praising God and asking Him for help. King Solomon’s temple dedication prayer shows this balance. Solomon began by highlighting God’s holiness and faithfulness. Then he gave God credit for the success of the project and emphasized God’s greatness, declaring, “The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!” (2 Chron. 6:18). After exalting God, Solomon asked Him to pay special attention to everything that happened inside the temple. He asked God to show mercy to the Israelites and to provide for them when they confessed their sin. Immediately after Solomon’s prayer, “fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple” (7:1). This incredible response reminds us that the mighty One we praise and speak to when we pray is the same One who listens to and cares about our requests. http://odb.org/2016/10/06/praising-and-asking/

DEVOTION – PRAISING AND ASKING

The highest heavens . . . cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built! 2 Chronicles 6:18

Teen Challenge, a ministry to at-risk youth that started in New York City, was born from an unusual commitment to prayer.

WHOLE SCHOOL NEWS

GEELONG SHOW DAY FRIDAY OCTOBER 14TH – NO SCHOOL

KIDS AND THE INTERNET The Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner has launched an online resource hub for parents, with guidance and strategies to help them keep their children safe online.

iParent https://www.esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent

According to the Commissioner’s office, the new iParent portal already houses a large variety of resources, advice and how-to videos intended to keep parents up to date with the technology being used by their children–and more is set to come.

https://www.esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent/7-ways-infographic

It includes an infographic that highlights seven different ways parents can manage devices at home—including tablets, game consoles, smart TVs and smartphones. Acting Commissioner Andree Wright said that while 90per cent of parents felt their child benefitted from being online, 60 per cent were concerned that their child was at risk of accessing inappropriate content:

In the past 12 months, 27 per cent of parents sought or received information about online safety for their kids. We’re providing a place for all parents to find that advice they’re looking for. We offer a range of practical advice on the most popular games, apps, and social networking sites, with our resources being continually reviewed and updated with what’s trending.

National Bandana Day is coming to GBC on the 28th of October. We are excited to participate in this excellent initiative organised by Canteen that supports young people fighting cancer. On Friday the 28th of October students are encouraged to wear their bandanas to school to make a visual statement of our combined support. Bandanas are $4 each and will be available at the office from the 17th October. On Thursday the 20th of October the Year 10 students will also visit home rooms with bandana merchandise which students will be able to purchase during that time. We are very much looking forward to having a very colourful Bandana Day and thank you for you enthusiastic participation!

THANK YOU AFTERNOON TEA A BIG thank you to all the members of our school community who have helped us out over the year in a wide range of activities. We would like to express our thanks by inviting you to an afternoon tea on Thursday 10th November from 2.30 pm in the Auditorium foyer. This is just a small thank you for all those jobs parents undertake that make our school such a great community. For ease of catering, please indicate via your child's diary if you are able to attend.

PRIMARY PATCH

Week Two of Term Four and although the weather has turned again, last week was wonderful to watch teachers and students enjoying a range of creative learning opportunities outside in the beautiful warm weather. Lower Primary students concentrated hard as they used their THRASS charts and practised writing these words on the concrete using colourful chalk, other students took the opportunity to quietly read outside, some undertook art and others were involved in games or sporting activities.

Once again, this is a terrific reminder how lovely the different seasons are and how we can enjoy nature, learning and being outside.

On that note, I would like to congratulate the Primary students for their hat wearing! Thank you parents for supporting us as we support you in looking after your children.

Term Four Assemblies This term, our Primary assemblies will focus on celebrations as a lead up to the most wonderful celebration of all, the birth of Jesus, the saviour of the world.

An important aspect of this focus on celebrations will include developing respect for different celebrations and building a greater understanding how individuals can show respect for a host by the way they prepare or come to a celebration.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

The Scholastic book company would like to thank our families by providing an additional Book Fair where the books are offered on a “buy one and get one free” basis. The fair will be at school on Thursday and Friday 10th and 11th November, both before and after school in P12. When you select two books, the cheapest book will be free. We thought this may provide a good opportunity for some early Christmas shopping. In light of the need for secret shopping, the fair will be open on Thursday and Friday from 8.30 – 9.15 am as well as after school until 4.00 pm. Please stay for a ‘cuppa’, a muffin and a browse after your children have been dropped off at school in the morning. Please note that the College will not make any profit from this event but would be grateful of any donated books on the day.

Book Fair Dates: Thursday 10th November - Friday 11th November Venue: P12 (Primary Science Room P - Block) Shopping Hours: 8.30 – 9.15 am and 3.30 – 4.00 pm

REGIONAL ATHLETICS On Tuesday the 11th of October, Ashleigh Winter and Delainey Hill went to the Western Metropolitan Regional Athletics competition.

Ashleigh participated in the 12/13 triple jump and Delainey participated in the 11 year old 200m dash. Both girls did our school proud, with Delainey coming 5th in the 200m final and Ashleigh coming first in the triple jump. Ashleigh will now compete at the state finals in the not to distant future! ART NEWS PRIMARY Year 6 students have been working on a collage project based on a famous Australian painting '5 o'clock Collins Street' 1957 by John Brack. This artwork has been the inspiration for the project. Students are creating a modern version of this painting using the medium of collage. Here are some photos of the student artworks in progress.

SECONDARY NEWS

SECONDARY SRC GIRLS ROCK AT ASSEMBLY The SRC has conducted two assemblies where the boys have addressed issues particularly relevant to them, and the girls have addressed issues of concern to girls. Tara and Tayla explored the issues of self-image, body image and the pressures girls experience from social media to look and be a certain way. Last Tuesday, Tara and Tayla led a discussion on developing healthy, positive and affirming relationships with other girls and laying solid foundations for romantic relationships with respect for yourself and respect for the other person being vital keys for a strong relationship. Another important area that was explored was the power and influence girls have over each other and the need to be encouraging, empowering, supportive and affirming in our friendships with each other. Tara and Tayla spoke of the power of compliments and the girls used their phones to send empowering messages of gratefulness to significant women in their lives.

YEAR 10 CANBERRA TRIP 2017

We are excited to announce that we will be taking a trip to Canberra during next year’s September holidays. A school excursion to the nation's capital is exciting, educational and a journey into the home of the Australian story. The many and varied national attractions in the nation’s capital provide stimulating educational programs relevant to all Australian curriculum subjects including civics and citizenship, history, science, art and culture. We are planning visits to the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, the National Science and Technology Centre and the Australian Institute of Sport. First offers to participate in this trip, will initially be students in Year 10 2017, but may be offered to other years depending on availability. – Andrew Liberts
