2 HAMPTON PARK SECONDARY COLLEGE - Respect, Learning, Working Together

Principal’s WelcomeHampton Park Secondary College has provided high quality education to our local community for over 30 years. We are committed to providing our community with the best educational opportunities and our students and their achievements are the central drivers behind all of our decision-making.

Our strong ties with the local community are reflected in our College’s core values of respect, learning and working together. It is these values that motivate us to ensure that our curriculum offerings, classroom practice and the resources on offer to our students are second to none. Our primary focus is to create a positive environment and deliver an excellent education that provides all students with an effective pathway, that extends well beyond their schooling lives.

We pride ourselves on being able to offer a broad range of programs and experiences for our students, whether that be through sport, music, the arts or through our extensive VCE, VCAL and VET programs.

I am immensely proud of our students and of all their achievements. This pride extends far beyond their academic performance and includes their sporting endeavours and their commitment and contributions to the wider community. Our College seeks to nurture and support our future community leaders as they grow – encouraging them to take on increasing responsibility both at school and at home.

As leaders of tomorrow, the spirit, commitment and talent of our students at Hampton Park Secondary College fills me with great hope for Australia’s future.

College Values: Positive Behaviours ProgramHampton Park Secondary College provides a safe, secure, friendly and stimulating environment for all students and staff.

Through the ongoing endorsement of our college values – respect, learning and working together – we aim to promote positive social behaviours among our college community. To achieve this, our teachers refer to these values in class, the school values are clearly displayed in our comprehensive values matrix, we acknowledge and reward positive behaviour by awarding values certificates and postcards at our celebratory assemblies. Our annual special multicultural assembly celebrates the diversity of cultures in our community.

Our Vision: Student Leadership and Student Voice.Hampton Park Secondary College has a strong tradition of student leadership. Our students are encouraged to develop their leadership skills through our targeted student voice and student leadership programs.

At Hampton Park Secondary College we recognise that student voice plays a critical role in providing teachers with direct feedback regarding the effectiveness of their teaching. We empower students through student voice, to have a direct influence on teaching and learning across the college.

Year 7 to 12 student leadership roles have been designed for students, by students. The roles provide an opportunity for students to share ideas and lead learning initiatives alongside their teachers. Involvement in Leadership helps to strengthen engagement and connectedness and to improve learning outcomes for everyone involved.

All of our students have the opportunity to participate in the following leadership roles:

• College Captaincy

• Domain Leader

• Reciprocal Reading Coach

• Class Representative

• Tech Team

• Sports Mentor

• Multi Pride Leader

• Student Representative Council (SRC)

• House Leaders.

Learning at Hampton Park Secondary College At Hampton Park Secondary College, our purpose is to deliver 21st Century teaching practices to a diverse and multicultural group of students. We focus on teaching our students ways to develop positive learning behaviours, such as Growth Mindset, and create the conditions for success in their learning.

The one-to-one laptop program is an integral tool for enhancing our students’ learning at the College. We are at the forefront of developing and implementing meaningful Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum offerings. It is important to us that our students gain future-focused skills such as the use of digital technologies, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and problem solving because these skills are recognised as being important and necessary skills for the world’s future leaders.

Hampton Park Secondary College is committed to supporting all of our students. Our learning environment centres around the college values of respect, learning and working together.

Through our teacher aides, multicultural aides and small EAL (English as an Additional Language) classes, we are able to provide additional help to students with any specific literacy and numeracy requirements. All of our teachers are trained in Literacy for Learning to further support literacy across all classes.

The Early Years

YEARS 7 AND 8

Our fantastic Flexible Learning Space is home to the Year 7 and 8 students who work with their teachers collaboratively to deliver targeted learning experiences across a range of subjects that meet the needs of all students.

In these crucial years of a student’s schooling life, we focus strongly on the development of their literacy and numeracy skills within the subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, The Arts, Technology, French, Physical and Health Education, and Literacy Intervention. A variety of educational and fun excursions and incursions support, reinforce and consolidate class-based learning.

YEAR 9

At Year 9, we are preparing our students to become more independent in their learning. Each student studies the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Physical and Health Education and Integrated Studies. In addition, Year 9 students have the opportunity to select electives in The Arts, Technology, Sport and French.

Our Year 9 elective program also includes the Community Involvement Program with local community partnerships such as kindergartens, primary schools and aged care facilities; a City Centre Experience; opportunities in Applied STEM and Drone Licensing; and targeted literacy intervention.

The Later Years

As our students progress through their schooling lives, the later years of Years 10 to 12, including VCE, VET and VCAL, become even more crucial to their future success and development.

YEAR 10

When students reach Year 10, they begin to think about, and focus on, their specific areas of interest and they make choices that enables them to specialise in a certain pathway. Year 10 students have the opportunity to accelerate their learning by undertaking a VCE study or participate in VET training.

During this time, students are also exposed to in-depth careers and pathways planning through participation in work experience, careers days, mock interviews, and University or TAFE-taster days. At this crucial time in their lives, we ensure that students are supported as they develop a career action plan (CAPs) with the guidance of our professional careers team.

YEARS 11 AND 12

The final years of school, Year 11 and 12, are the most important and our College provides students with as much support as is needed to ensure their ongoing success. Students in Year 11 and 12 have the option to study VCE, VCAL and VET in a variety of combinations to meet their specific needs. The College offers a wide range of VCE, VCAL and VET programs and has very successful pathway outcomes for students into University, TAFE, apprenticeships or into the workforce.

At Hampton Park Secondary College, we are extremely proud of our collaboration with the Monash University SAM program and our partnership with RMIT. The opportunity to partner with such high-quality institutions gives our students a significant advantage in these crucial later years of their school career.

Maker SpaceOur Maker Space is an exciting, leading-edge innovation where students and staff can learn about, and experiment with, new technologies such as 3D printers, drones and robotics kits to name just a few. The college community can also partake of coffee and iced frappe in break times. The Maker Space also plays host to lunch-time clubs, such as the drone club and computer tinkering. Classes utilise the space for technology-focused lessons and activities, which are facilitated and supported by our Head of Information and Communications (ICT) Technician.

Co-curricular Programs: Beyond the Classroom

MUSIC AND PERFORMING ARTS

Our College offers an excellent instrumental music program with a range of instrument choices. Our music lessons are taught individually, but if you would prefer to create music and perform in a group, our annual school production is always a fun and lively celebration of our students’ talent and creativity. Our strong culture of performing arts provides students with the opportunity to participate in music, productions, art shows and dance.

HOUSE SYSTEM

Upon enrolment at Hampton Park College, students are allocated to a ‘house’ which they actively support through participation in classroom and a wide range of sporting and co-curricular activities.

SPORT

Throughout the school year, students have the opportunity to participate in school-wide sporting events, such as swimming and athletics carnivals, as well as a range of sporting competitions at local and state level.

DEBATING

Run through the Debaters Association of Victoria Inc. (DAV), our student debaters participate in state-wide competitions at junior and senior levels. Debating is an excellent way for students to develop their skills and confidence in public speaking and is great preparation for their future careers!

Wellbeing OverviewThe happiness and wellbeing of our students is extremely important to our College. That’s why we engage a Student Wellbeing Team who focus specifically on the emotional, social and psychological wellbeing of all students in the college community.

The team consists of wellbeing workers and an Adolescent Health Nurse, with additional support from a Psychologist or Social Worker. The Student Wellbeing Team run a Breakfast Program four mornings each week to engage with students and provide opportunities for interaction and support.
