There has been rapid progress with our new Da Vinci Centre. Handover has been moved forward to Monday, 15 October, 2018. Having been through the building site a few times it is looking fantastic and we’re very excited about having a new state of the art STEAM Centre providing optimal learning spaces for our students.

The Stage 2 second two court Basketball Stadium is underway. There has been some tree removal to make way for the building. J Block is scheduled for relocation in the first week of the holidays and D Block is being emptied prior to demolition late October/early November. Scheduled completion of Stage 2 is April/May.

On Wednesday September 12, we were privileged to have presenters from the Carly Ryan Foundation talk to our Year 8 students about Online Safety and Respectful relationships.

Students are using the internet daily to connect with each other and the world around them. It is important to empower them to make wise choices, to look after their digital reputation and keep themselves and others safe while navigating the internet, apps and forming their own relationships both online and offline. The presenters talked to students about having a safe online presence.

Bentleigh Secondary College 2018 2

Bentleigh Secondary College has been fortunate to run the Raise Mentoring program this year, with the first graduation ceremony held on Thursday September 20. This program paired students with mentors who worked one-on-one with each other, with mentors coming from a variety of backgrounds such university students studying psychology and professionals working in industries such as IT, magazine editing and coaching, with the common goal of wanting to ‘give back to the community’ by mentoring young adults.

The graduation ceremony was a wonderful opportunity for both mentors and students to celebrate the positive working relationship they developed, along with the personal achievements resulting from these relationships. Students, staff and parents alike have expressed their gratitude to Raise Foundation for providing such a wonderful opportunity for Bentleigh Secondary College to run this inspiring program. Thank you to Katie Parker-Vukusic who coordinated the program.

VCE Trial exams are now complete. The remaining weeks until their actual VCE exams are of the utmost importance in determining students’ final results. Year 12 students need to ensure they are consistently revising their coursework and practising past exam papers under timed conditions. Students’ study notes should be updated regularly.

Edrolo is available to all students and covers most subject areas. It provides comprehensive and up-to-date online video lectures that can be used to learn and revise VCE. Edrolo provides detailed explanations along with step-by-step worked examples from past exams, all presented by Australia’s best teachers. Edrolo is ideal for revision before exams and can help boost your ATAR.

Examination papers can be viewed on the VCAA website: www.vcaa.vic.edu.au. Students should access and read assessment reports for each study on this website. These reports are written by examiners and highlight common strengths and weaknesses in students’ answers. The need for regular revision and study cannot be over emphasised.

We wish every student doing Units 3 and 4 exams the very best.

WORKING BEE

Thank you to all the staff, parents and students who attended our Term 3 Working Bee Sunday, 9 September. Many hands make light work as we were able to move 160 lockers in preparation for more building works, tend to the Admin garden and Urban Forest, plant a Japanese Weeper tree in the piazza and remove a lot of gum from pathways, tables and chairs. Thank you also to our budding photographer Asher Forrest. Asher also won first place in the Royal Melbourne Show (Art, Craft & Cookery Competition) for his photography.

Wishing you all the best as you finish the term.

YEAR 9 ART Ms Rohanna Anderson, Visual Arts Teacher

In Art this semester, Year 9 students have been learning about the Impressionist art movement. They have begun painting landscapes of their homes in the impressionist style in class, and in-between have been creating artworks outside like the impressionists. Students have enjoyed spending time outdoors in the wetlands where they could be inspired by nature.

SCIENCE WEEKDr Michael Lyristis, Head of Maths and Science

Thank you to all participants in the Science Week Festivities for 2018. Homegroup science quizzes ran for the whole week and participation was high, especially among the senior classes. The results were tabulated, and congratulations are in order to the following Homegroups: 7HG4, 8HG4, 9HG1, 10HGD, 11HGC, and a three-way tie for Year 12 with 12A, 12C and 12D! A great effort indeed.

Monday saw intense competitive spirit shown in the paper aeroplane competition with Stephanie Borrett (11C), Jesse Dann (12D) and Gregory Handoyo (7.2) winners of their respective categories.

Tuesday’s winners of the Chemistry Quiz and Psychology Quiz were Aiden Sutton (12C), who beat a number of entrants to win the chemistry competition and congratulations also to Mazzi-Rose Esparon (12F) who won the Psychology quiz.

Wednesday was stress ball making day where over 100 students took part in the decoration of their stress balls in all manner of different colours. I know that they will put them to good use during their studies and hoping they relieve a little stress.

There was a change in the agenda for Thursday with the straw building competition cancelled as part of being an environmentally conscious school and instead a science Kahoot was enjoyed by many of the students with lots of sweet treats handed out as rewards.

Friday saw the close of Science week, with a whodunnit murder mystery “Who murdered Ms Read?” Clues were analysed leads investigated and the ultimate murderer revealed! Winners of the murder mystery were, Sarah Hartwig (11B), Stephanie Borrett (11C) and Pimm Zyntek (8.1), Zoe Zhou (8.1), Mehak Gollen (8.1) and Latoya Love (8.2). Winners of Einstein’s puzzle were, Luke Chittenden (11B) and Stephan Karatselios (11D), Nick Graber (10F), Cam Graber (10E), Oscar Munro (8.1) and Sarah Tonkin (8.6), and finally Thomas Nguyen (9.5) and Hamish Scott (9.5).

Throughout the week a photo competition was run with the theme of change makers and the winner of that was Patrick Dwyer (10A) with a very poignant photo and caption:

“WW2 changed the game in terms of countries attitude towards war and how weapons and technology evolved rapidly”

Congratulations to all winners and participants and looking forward to science excitement next year!

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWSMS LEANNE WINFIELD, ASSISTANT PRINCIPALCongratulations to all of our wonderful students who have now completed their classwork for Unit 3 and 4 studies. It is also very pleasing to see the students working so hard on their trial exams this week. Teachers will provide feedback on exams at the beginning of Term 4. During the study break prior to the exams, we look forward to seeing students in the VCE Centre working with peers and teachers. We are expecting a large number of students to come into the school over the September holidays for Connect workshops and extra classes that our teachers are running. The Connect Program is on Compass and a timetable for other classes has been provided for students. Year 10 and 11 students are currently working hard to complete class work prior to their exams.

Year 12 students are studying in the VCE Centre prior to their trial exams this week.

Friday November 2 is the Term 4 Professional Learning Day which is a student free day. We will be consolidating our work on DET’s High Impact Teaching Strategies, Screencast and podcasts and continuing to develop our Whole School Writing Program across all Learning Areas.

Next year we will have an ICT program where parents of Year 7 and Year 10 students can purchase devices for their students. The new device will be a Lenova Yoga which has tablet capabilities with updated speed and storage. This device can be purchased through edunet. Information about this process has been shared with Year 9 parents and the portal is now open.

YEAR 12 STUDIO ART EXCURSIONMs Rohanna Anderson, Visual Arts Teacher

Year 12 Studio Arts students recently went on an excursion to the Monash Gallery of Arts to prepare for their end of year exams, taking a break out of their busy schedules of creating wonderful artworks. Students were able to see first-hand how a gallery and its staff preserve and present artworks by some of Australia’s most famous photographers. Thanks to Ms Rosenbrock for taking us in the bus.

MUSIC NEWS

On Tuesday August 28 the Concert Band & the Intermediate Stage Band took part in an overnight tour to Phillip Island. Students performed to several local primary schools, inspiring students to continue to learn or to pick up an instrument and experience the joy of playing music. We even managed to see some penguins as we shivered in anticipation. Congratulations to all involved on an excellent tour.

Well done to students who completed their AMEB exams this term.
