BENTLEIGH CRICKET CLUB 11/12 October/November edition 1 NEWSLETTER From The President With the season well and truly underway I would like to pass on a special thanks to some of the people that have worked tirelessly around the club so far. We are a growing cricket club with plans to become the biggest and best Cricket Club in the area once again. The volunteer base which is required to ensure our teams are well managed and supported is significant and I commend all those who volunteer their time throughout the course of the season so far. You, as much as everyone have ensured that the club remains a strong one with a solid base to move forward I would like to thank the members of the Executive and General Committee who have supported me throughout the year so far. I know that all the members of the club are very grateful for the effort that you have provided. People like Paul Ciccarella, who as Treasurer has played a key role in controlling the financial side of the club. Matt Thorp as always has jumped into his role with passion and determination. James Robertson as Social Secretary has brought a freshness and excitement to the social calendar which has shown through in the success of the functions so far and not forgetting Steve McGinness who has put in hours upon hours of work to make sure our junior program continues to grow. I would like to pass on a special thanks all those other people around the club that have been doing the little things that help make our club great, from the ladies in the kitchen on Thursdays and Saturdays to the scorers on game day, to Pete and Ronnie who are at Bentleigh almost every week to help the boys. And to all the other people that help out when they can, thank-you. Also people such as Russell Keyt in his role as Chairman of Selectors and also with his help in the junior development program, who has done a power of work. Chairman of Selectors is a role that I have also done in the past and I know that it is often a difficult task to pick teams each week but he has done so with passion and enthusiasm. I also know that all the Senior Captains are doing a fine job with their teams and are pushing for spots in the finals in all our senior competitions that we are involved in. In Senior Diversion we have had reasonable on field success in the first part of the year. The first XI continues to be competitive in a very strong Senior Division VTCA and the plans that Adam Ryan and the other members of the Cricket Department are putting in place should steer the whole club for a solid future moving forward. Lucas Jones in his first year as Captain is steering the 2 nd XI towards yet another finals campaign. Troy Gill’s 3 rd XI have been seriously unlucky with the weather but we are a young team which is more than com- petitive when they get on the field. Mark Walsh and his 4 th XI are right in the mix and are playing well. To the junior coaches and managers, congratulations for your efforts so far this year. The junior program is growing in numbers and reputation each year thanks to your hard work. To Alex Caravelas, I pass on my thanks for co-ordinating the In2 Cricket program at Bentleigh. Many current players and parents help out Alex each week and I thank you as well. This program continues to provide us with our junior and in time, senior cricketers of the future and I look forward to seeing the progress of these aspiring young players. continued page 6

NEWSLETTERFrom The PresidentWith the season well and truly underway I would like to pass on a special thanks to some of the people that have worked tirelessly around the club so far.  We are a growing cricket club with plans to become the biggest and best Cricket Club in the area once again. The volunteer base which is required to ensure our teams are well managed and supported is significant and I commend all those who volunteer their time throughout the course of the season so far. You, as much as everyone have ensured that the club remains a strong one with a solid base to move forward

I would like to thank the members of the Executive and General Committee who have supported me throughout the year so far. A Plan for the Futureby Adam Ryan

My first contribution to the newsletter for the Bentleigh Cricket Club is both an honor and a privilege. To be able to come back and capta in Bentleigh, where my personal cricket career started some 25 years ago, with the hope that I can add something to both players and club that gave me so many wonderful memories and friendships is a wonderful opportunity.

I would like to thank the Bentleigh committee for the oppor tun i ty and a l l the p l ayer s for the i r warm embrace of me as captain.

The Bentleigh CC is a unique cricket club and I would like pause for a moment to con-sider the wonderful facilities and the incredible support that we p layers rece ive .  From the committee to the gir ls cooking meals on a Thursday night, guys running the bar, to the selectors and captains of all the elevens, the scorers and team managers, the p layer s that spend enormous time running and assisting junior teams and programs right down to the guys that put the signs out each week.

No names need to be mentioned. One because knowing the people that do all this work they do it not to be acknowledged in a forum such a s th i s , they do i t

because of a passion and love of the club. However, as cap-tain of the 1st XI I want to say thank you to all of you. I am certainly humbled by the work that is put in and I hope that my contribution on and off the field reflects in some way those that I see every time I am at Arthur Street. I tip my hat to each and every one of you. In cricketing terms, ‘Well Played’!

I do not wish my newsletter contribution as captain of the club to be a round review. Mark Walsh does an awesome job on that front and plus with the internet today there is enough information on the VTCA website to gain an insight into how we are going. Rather, I would like share with the club what could be possible if we capitalise on the opportunities that are in front of us in 2011/12 and beyond. It is by capitalising on these opportunities that Bentleigh will go a long way to ensure a sustained success for many years to come. I guess in essence forming a club that can have a dynasty of success rather than a year or two every decade.

In saying that the work that Peter Roach, Chris Street, Christian Seisen and many others have put in, going all the way back to Da ve McNamara ( sor r y Da ve , you’re not that old ) , has meant that the club from a playing group point of view and the group that I as a new captain have to work is one of adding value and growth rather than having to ‘build’

something from the ground up. I certainly tip my hat to all of you.

However, as we all know, as soon as you stay still you go backwards and you can go backwards very quickly in sport so there is certainly no time to waste.

As a fresh set of eyes and in my persona l v i e w the Bentleigh Cricket club has a wonderful opportunity to capitalise on the demographic of the Bentleigh area and the broader growth rates that Aust ra l i a ha s and i s experiencing over the last 5 years.  If we can demonstrate to the community that we as a club are going to not only he lp mould exce l l ent cricketers, some of which will pursue higher honors, but also and some what more importantly demonstrate to parents that we are going to mould young boys in to excellent people.

I say this because I would love to see Bentleigh in the next few years bring the girls and boys in to the Mi lo programs, through the various junior teams and into the senior teams. This view is one of hard work now for benefits such as increased membership through more junior and senior teams that the club will enjoy for decades. Imagine Bentleigh having multiple junior teams in all age groups, 5 or even 6 senior teams and what about a women’s or junior girls teams.

Cricket is a great game and with the in roads that cricket has made with the fairer and admit ted l y smar ter and obviously better looking sex of our species at least one women’s team would be simply awesome for Bentleigh in the next few years. All possible!

The real question is how do we make this a reality? Given that competition for the ‘ r ec r u i tment ’ o f jun ior players, both girls and boys in our area is as hot as anywhere in Melbourne we need to work extremely hard to ensure that we not only attract the young boys and girls in our area but also en-sure that we keep them involved with bentleigh for many years.

This is something that Paul as President and the current committee shou ld be commended for as they have already embarked on a Milo program that attracts over 50/60 girls and boys every Friday. The a tmosphere and enjoyment that I see in both the k ids and parents i s fantastic and infectious.

Given that only a few years ago there were no junior teams, to now having under age sides and the feeding of junior players from the Milo program as the starting point will over ten plus years, given the right support deliver results. And yes we should be thinking ten years out to ensure that Bentleigh thrives well beyond the current crop of members.

To explore this idea further, in general, one of the missing s teps in jun ior c r i cket programs has been the ‘link’ between junior players and senior cricket. In other words c r i cket ha s a h igh participation rate amongst juniors but for some reason we are losing them at the ages of fifteen to eighteen.

However, when you think about out one of the many great aspects of cricket in that junior players as young as twelve and thirteen can play a game with men well into their fifties or as someone said to be the other day the “finities”. This means that it is a great sport for fathers to play with the i r sons and why not mothers and daughters.

This year through the vision of Russ Keyt and the support of the committee and senior players Bentleigh has taken junior development both in a cricketing sense but also in a mentoring sense to a whole new level in local cricket. In fact having spent the best part of 17 years at district level I can safely say that it transcends anything that I personally have seen from any cricket club at any level. The Bentleigh Cricket Academy, which creates an environment of training and engagement with senior players will fast track the development of all j un ior s invo lved in the program. Having seen the brilliant response from the kids that are part of the program their development in such a short period of time I have no doubt we are on the

right track. The work that they are doing now may not see real benefits for two to three years from now which means stay tuned because it won’t be long until we see one of these guys in the first XI. I cannot wait for that day.

With junior sport programs it is not just important that parents a re invo lved ; I personally think it a critical. It doesn’t matter if parents understand the game or not, it doesn’t matter if parents know how to score or not, or how to umpire or not. What does matter is that parents are there. There is nothing more wonderful than a junior player walking off the ground and ‘sharing’ a great catch, a great shot, a wicket or a run out with their parents. This is what both the k ids and parents will remember.

The Bentleigh senior players at all levels are supporting the tireless few coordinators, junior team managers and coaches to ensure that the junior program is well run. Anyone who ha s been involved in running junior sports teams will testify that it is a tough but rewarding job.

Each week I am excited to play with a group of men rep-resenting Bentleigh with pas-sion and class and with the ‘investment’ the Club is mak-ing into the junior programs I am confident Bentleigh will go from strength to strength in the future.

It truly is a ‘Grand Old Flag’.

Coachs’ CornerWe are 2 months into the season and we are set-ting up for a big finish . The ones and twos are get-ting better and better with every game and with a little bit of consistency will put a full game together and dominant .

The unlucky threes are yet to finish 2 full games of cricket. With the experience of the elder statesmen mixed in with the young brigade, after Christmas they will be a force.

The fours under Walshy have had a great start to the year, sitting in fourth position they are poised to have a good run home with are youngsters like Mor-gan Foot and Nick Diamond amongst others putting Bentleigh in a great position in years to come .

The work with the academy that many are doing is paying dividends already . All the boys in it are fitter and smarter cricketers which is a great credit to the coaches involved. Someone who has performed so wonderfully so far is Jeff Keyt . His detail to training has made his start to the year so impressive . Jeff has made the most of training to improve his technique and the ability to make big scores . Well done Jeff .

Just remember guys the harder you train the more rewarding cricket becomes .

Good luck for the forthcoming games .

A Strong Start For The 2’s

The seconds have had a positive start to the season and sit 2-1-2.  Washouts in round 1 and 4 has been frustrating but there is momentum building and we are looking to put in a big performance in round 6 against Williamstown to send us to the xmas break in the top 4.

Eli Hayes has been the shining light so far with the bat already notching up 3 half centuries in his 3 hits and the consistent form of the new ball bowlers has been great to see lead by evergreens Aron Van Staden and Lucas Jones.  The emergence of young players Martyn Clements, Max Turner and Michael Keyt has been a boost to the team, their readiness and enthusiasm to step up for the team makes for a exiting next few years for the club.

We are really looking forward to the rest of the season and I sense some big performances just around the corner from our top order batsmen.

3rd XI - Looking forward to some cricketby Troy Gill

A forfeit, an unavailable ground and Melbourne's inclement spring weather has meant only two matches played so far for Bentleigh's one day warriors - the  third eleven. Unfortunately these two matches have resulted in a couple of close loses. However, with Christmas just around the corner and the forecast for some warm summer days ahead there's shore to be plenty of exciting cricket to come from this youthful group of players.

Round 5 v Middle Park

On a batsman’s day Middle Park won the toss and elected to bat. A good opening stand and some strong late hitting from Middle Park's batters  left them with a handy total of 9/169. Best of Bentleigh's bowlers was junior Dylan Velleman. Dylan spun his way to 4/45 in his first bowling spell  at senior level. Bentleigh were kept on a tight rein by Middle Park’s accurate bowling and could not chase down the runs finishing with 5/135. Best of Bentleigh’s batsmen was the captain Troy Gill (48), president (and pinch hitter) Paul Glew (29*) and opener Rhys Trembath (28).

Round 6 v Dingley

Playing away Bentleigh won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked like a great track. Some tight bowling, slow outfield and a surprisingly slow deck saw Bentleigh end there 36 over's with 6/105. Captain Troy Gill and Jatin Bhatia both top scored with 34 a piece. In a close tussle Dingley managed to get over the line in the last over to finish at 5/108. Best of the bowlers was Dave McNamara with 2/25 off 9 over's.

4th XI - A NEW ERA FOR THE CLUB

The new look 4th XI this year is on track to make finals heading in to the last couple of weeks before the Christmas break. A classic win last weekend against arch rivals Thornbury Turf Strokers (TTS) saw us restore some self belief after losing a few agonisingly close battles earlier in the season. So far we have had 7 full games with 3 wins and 4 losses. Two washouts is probably standard for this time of the year. Of the 4 losses we lost by only 1 run, 2 wickets and 16 runs in very competitive matches and all of them could of gone our way with an ounce of luck.

So far we have seen a new crop of players come through with plenty of youngsters showing their talent. Nick Diamond has claimed a permanent spot with his all-rounder skills, twelve year old Morgan Foot has shown some solid technique with the bat and nearly won us a game off his own bat in round 2. Gal Landau has improved his left arm bowling no end and Nadav Alon has taken up the wicket keeping job with great enthusiasm and looks to be improving each week.

A couple of new recruits in Nathan Mighalls as a quality pace bowler taking regular wickets and Kris Allan as a gun batsman all ready making two fifty’s, have slotted into the team perfectly.

Looking to keep the finals dream alive we have a couple of big games ahead against Ajax and Monash before we have five home games remaining after Christmas. Keep up the hard work at training, lets practise that fielding and aim for your personal goals and we shall achieve great things this season.

For any past or present player that would like some fun on a Sunday and is fit enough to go around please let Russ Keyt know you would like a game and we will do our best to get you involved.

Thankyou’s on behalf of the team for the great support of members at the club for helping us get organised for games so far this year and your cheering on Sundays. Special thanks to Jimmy for his pitch roll-ing and Russ Keyt on his electric score-board talent. Big thanks also go to Vanessa and Bianca for helping out with our awe-some afternoon teas!

I have named only a few of the people that make our great club run and there are many more that work further behind the scenes that go unnoticed.   It takes a huge amount of work to operate a club like Bentleigh and there still remain opportunities for more people within our club to put their hand up to assist and not wait to be asked to help.  To you the playing members of the club, both Senior and Junior.  I hope you are enjoying the year so far and thanks for your efforts on the field.  Both the Executive and the General Committees have been hard at work behind the scenes to make the club bigger and better, but I would love to hear from any of you, the members, about what you think about where the club is headed and what direction you believe we should go.  Finally, with Christmas fast approaching I want to take the time to wish all the members of our club and their families a happy and safe Christmas and I look forward to seeing all of you at the club in the coming weeks.

Where Are They Now? Bruce Roscrow

Since finishing with Bentleigh CC in 1994, cricket wise I was enticed back to my former ( District ) Premier Club, Prahran in '94-95, for another season. At the completion of that year, Sth Caulfield CC appointed me as playing Coach for the next four years.( '95-99 )...Although the team had many great senior players, we managed to play in and lose four Senior Division Semi Finals in a row !! In 1999, one of my former Prahran teammates, Greg Booth, rang me to see what I was up to. He was coaching my former Sub District side Moorabbin. This was my first senior club where I had started playing way back as an 18 yr old in 1982 along side the former great West Indian International, Malcolm Marshall. I went and played for the next three seasons, (last two as 1st XI Captain which was a great thrill personally to be offered to Captain my old club.) Although unsuccessful, we blooded a lot of young up and coming players. At the end of 2002, I decided to 'retire'. After a year off and realizing how much I missed it and talking with some blokes I had met through work, I was back playing the following year in the Mercantile Cricket Association for The National Bank....now simply known as The Nationals. We won the B Grade flag that year which was a personal highlight as it was the only other Grand Final I had played in since the Bentleigh Senior Division GF back in 1992-93.

We continued to play on with the club for the next seven seasons having a lot of fun and making finals nearly every year. I was very happy just to be a part of a 'one team club' that never really trained (apart from a 4 week pre season .....seriously!!!), and one that totally enjoyed each others company throughout the year, both on and off the field. The last two seasons the club offered me the Captaincy which I took with great pride. We lost the semi through an agonizing wash out ( we finished 4th in 08-09 )so the following season was named the 'Year of Unfinished Business'....and we went on a mission finishing on top of the ladder a game clear before the Finals. We smashed our opponents in the Semi but the GF was a 200 over nail-biter, bowling out our opposition in the 195th over of the game to win by 15 runs.

I was drained, I had torn my hip-flexor on the last morning in the 5th over of the day, but we had achieved what we set out for.

I retired straight away! Some 400 + games, two flags, my body screamed out...NO MORE ! Apart from playing, I have been a Junior Cricket Coach & Co Ordinator from U 11's to currently the U 17's at Mt Waverley Sub District CC as well an Assistant Coach & specialist bowling Coach for the Seniors this season. My son Tom is now 15 & plays in the U 17's and bowls left arm orthodox and is also a left handed bat in the mid-late order. He has just completed Year 9 at Caulfield Grammar. My daughter Kate is 13 and a keen netballer and softballer and has just finished Year 7 at Caulfield Grm. Kerry & I have been married for nearly 18 years and still live in Mt Waverley. Workwise, I have been involved and worked in Sales & Marketing with Textile Companies for over 25years.I am currently with an Australian Schoolwear Manufacturer / Retailer working in Retail Operations.

JuniorsUnder 16’s The Bentleigh  Under  16’s this year have begun the season with a fairly solid start, with room to improve  and  push  for  finals  post  Christmas.  After round 5, they sit at 2 wins, 2  losses and a washout draw.

The first  round  saw  the  boys narrowly  lose  to Parkdale United  in a  Twenty20 match, with the difference  lying  ultimately  in  the  run  rate.      Batting  first,  our  90  runs  proved  too  few  to   defend,  conceding  103  in  the  field.  However, they  quickly  bounced  back,  and  in  the  next round  against  Elsternwick‐Elwood  blazed  an impressive 156 in 20 overs, batting first. Notable scores  went  to  Frasier  Somerville  (30),  Jason Standfield (41 n.o.), and Nick Diamond (40 n.o.). All  of  our bowlers chipped  in,  and  some  solid fielding saw  the Bentleigh boys with  their first win after a  string of losses  in the previous sea‐son.

Round  3  against  McKinnon  however  was  a speed bump  in  the aim  for finals. Having been washed out  in the first week, our first 40 overs a side match was reduced to another Twenty20 format.  Bowling  first, we  managed  to  restrict McKinnon to 74, but a  string of early wickets in our batting innings left us without the depth to successful run‐chase. Of note was Max Turner’s stabilising  innings of  15  not  out,  but  7  wickets down saw us close the innings just short at 66.

The fourth round was similarly affected by  rain, being  called  off  midway  through  the  second week  with  the  boys  at  5  for  75,  chasing  a   daunting  169.  Jason  had  3  wickets  in  the  first week,  and  his  knock  of  30  next  week  set  the boys  up  with  a  good  start,  but  the  weather   ultimately had other plans for the boys.

This  last  round,  however,  saw  the Under  16’s have  another  impressive  victory.  With  only  8 players  to  represent  the  side,  all  of  the  boys bravely  played  their  roles  in  difficult                 circumstances to pull up with a  comeback win. Under  trying  conditions  the boys bowled first, and  an  impressive  innings  of  115  from  a Moorabbin West batsmen presented a target of 158 the following week. Despite this display, our     fielders held  strong, and  Gal’s spell of 5  for  26 off 8 overs allowed the boys to keep MWCC at a healthy,  but  gettable  total.  Our  batsman  still had  the  work  to  do  however,  and  proved  themselves up to the task. With 47 overs to bat, Max  Turner  (40),  Luke  Johnstone  (22),  Nick Diamond  (40)  and  Nadov  Alon  (21)  all  made scores  to get  us over  the line.  In  a  great  team effort,  the  boys  showed  that  the  difference   between  the two  sides was that ours relied  on no one player to carry the team.

The  following  rounds  with  further  test  our  abilities  and  provide  challenges  in  reduced numbers,  but  I  see  only  improvement  ahead, and come the end of the season, we hope to be in serious contention for the finals series.

Under 12’s ‐ Some Great Performances by David Mullane

Half way  through  the  season sees the Under  12’s on  top  of  the ladder, one game clear of  second spot.      Despite the inclement weather in recent weeks we have managed 4 wins and one draw due to a wash out.    Games against the 2nd and 3rd placed sides  in coming weeks will   hopefully set the team up for the rest of the season.

Despite losing   5 players   from last year the new addiFons to the team in MaG Foster, Jordan Burns , Josh CaGs and Luca Micalessi have proved more than adequate replacements.         Recent weeks has seen good improvement in all of baOng, bowling  and fielding.     BaOng and bowling depth now goes right down the order and the number of extras each week is significantly lower than the opposiFon teams.

However, the most pleasing aspect of the season so far is  the contribuFon by all players in the team at one Fme or another with some of the highlights being:

‐ MaG Foster scoring 18 not out and holding down the last 10 overs in his first game.

‐ Nick Lawrence taking 5/0 off 2 overs in game 2 against Dingley.

‐ Score of 6/268 in game 3 against Moorabbin ( N Lawrence 39 no, D Mullane 38 no,  A MarFn 34 no and J GarbuG 33 no)

‐ J GarbuG with a  purple bowling patch against Moorabbin with a double of bowled GarbuG caught Mullane (keeper).

‐ Jack Joyner with wickets in recent games and 4 fours this year.

‐ J Burns, R Crook, W Anderson, J Haw holding down the middle order and consistently scoring runs and taking wickets when needed.

‐ L Micalessi with a wicket and 4 in his first game.

With five games to go there is sFll plenty of work to do but based on the season so far I am sure that the whole team will conFnue to put in their best for the rest of the season.

Under 12 Modified BlueThe Modi f ied b lue s ide has been progressively improving each week in their performances.  Half the side are 1st time players who came out of the milo program and who are all about 8 years old.

Although we haven't won a game yet, the boys have put in some solid performances, although unfortunately not the same time.

Hopefully after Christmas and by the end of the season the blue team will be able have a couple of wins.

Well done to Sam Spackman and Seamus McIllroy who have been two of the more consistent performers so far.

The Under 12 Reds consists of 10 players, a combination of second and first year players.  The boys are developing well as a team and their batting, bowling and wicketkeeping skills are improving each week.  The players works hard at training and in matches and most impor-tantly, are all enjoying playing cricket.

The Under 12 Reds have had good wins against Dingley, Beaumaris and the Bentleigh Blue team but were defeated by a more experienced Cluden team.  The team members are Tully Foot, Nic Taranto, Will Sharp, Ben Lawrence, Lachlan Dight, Alan Abraham, Edward Turner, Lucas Semple, Caleb Caldwell and Peter Brashnarev.  Parent support and encouragement for the team has been excellent and we look forward to the second half of the season.
