MULLUM MULLUM RESERVE NAMING The College has been informed that Maroondah Council is considering a proposal from the Norwood Football and Cricket Clubs that the main oval at Mullum Mullum Reserve be named the David Jamieson Oval. David Jamieson was Sports Master at Norwood High School and he founded the Norwood High School Cricket and Football Clubs in 1959 and 1960 respectively. The current Norwood Football and Cricket Clubs have evolved from those early Norwood High School clubs. We look forward to hearing of Maroondah Council approving the proposal. In our 60th year, we celebrate the enduring legacy that David Jamieson created, while a staff member at our College, being recognised in such a fitting manner.

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT – TWO IMPORTANT ISSUES We remind parents that, when dropping off and picking up students, drivers must obey the signed parking restrictions. There are areas on Byron Street where cars cannot be parked and other areas where there are time restrictions. Further, it is illegal to park across the driveways of local residences. We ask all parents to ensure they drive and park safely and obey the signs – most importantly, the posted speed limit during school hours. It is important to note that occasionally Council By-Laws Officers visit the roads around the school. As with the past couple of years, parents do not have access to the College grounds for dropping off and picking up their children. This rule was introduced for the start or end of the school day to ensure our student pedestrians, who quite rightly walk on the internal roadways, are safe inside the grounds. We trust our community will observe this important safety rule. This includes the lane off Mullum Mullum Road (which is also closed to school traffic at all times, during the construction of our Gymnasium), as well as the internal road in front of the College Library.

Andrew Sloane, Principal

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST SOUGHT HAVE A SAY, GET INVOLVED! Norwood Secondary College is looking for interested parents to contribute to our new ‘Creating Respectful Relationships and Gender Equity in Schools’ project. Respectful Relationships Education is a Department of Education and Training initiative based upon the recommendations by the Royal Commission into Family Violence. The Royal Commission identified schools as being perfectly positioned to play a critical role in changing negative attitudes that contribute to gender inequality and family violence. Through education, our aim is that young Australians will drive deep cultural change throughout our society as they mature into adults. Norwood Secondary College is proud to be selected by the Department of Education and Training to drive this exciting Statewide Initiative.

We seek thoughtful and enthusiastic parents to join our committee. The role requires a 6 - 12 month commitment, which includes:

Participation at approximately two meetings per term

Contribution to school policies related to the initiative

Development of and involvement in College-wide activities Please forward expressions of interest, briefly outlining why you are interested as well as any relevant experience, to [email protected] Attn.: Jackie Harris - Assistant Principal by Friday, 23 March.

UNIFORM MATTERS It has been a smooth start to the 2018 school year. The majority of our students are wearing the correct uniform in a neat and tidy fashion. Thank you to the parents who have updated uniforms that are too small and/or worn out. We appreciate that there can be significant costs for families at the start of every school year. We were very proud of the presentation of our students on photo day. To provide greater clarity about some uniform matters, please find below a quick update. Full details can be found in the student planners.

Black jumpers have been phased in at Year 7 and 8. Purple and grey jumpers can no longer be purchased, however, students currently in Year 9 can continue to wear them in 2018.

Spray jackets can no longer be purchased. Many Year 7 and 8 students have purchased blazers, however these are not compulsory. Spray jackets in good condition can be worn until the end of 2018. Spray jackets are outer garments, therefore they cannot be worn in classrooms. Students are encouraged to purchase jumpers. A new affordable showerproof raincoat is available for wearing to interschool sport, and to and from school.

Trousers and shorts are available for both boys and girls. Shorts are only considered as part of the summer uniform for both genders, 7 – 12.

Full winter uniform for both boys and girls is to be worn in Terms 2 and 3, however, there will always be a changeover period that will be clearly communicated.

In winter, girls are to wear tights (not stockings) with the tartan skirt. These are available in the Uniform Shop.

Grey, business-style shirts for boys are now compulsory for boys in Years 7 - 12.

Ties remain optional.

Full PE uniform can be worn to school if a student has PE during period 1 and can also be worn home if a student has PE during period 5. A student cannot wear a combination of uniforms to and from school.

No student is permitted to wear logo socks. This has been a clearly communicated expectation.

Girls’ hemlines should sit just above the knee.

Boys need to be clean shaven at all times. We appreciate the support of all families to ensure all students wear their

uniform correctly.

INTRODUCING OUR 2018 COLLEGE PREFECTS Kyle Kerr: Prefect (SRC) My name is Kyle Kerr and I am the 2018 Student Representative Council (SRC) Prefect. This means that I represent Norwood students at School Council meetings. Each fortnight I meet with the student council reps from each year level and then each month I report to the School Council on the issues that are important to us as students. I’m looking forward to this role and am excited to be representing the students at Norwood. I love playing Basketball, going to the Gym and Gaming. When I finish school, I am going to travel the world and would love to never have to fly commercially!

Jenna Brownlee and Tamara Pappin: Prefect (Student Wellbeing) My name is Jenna Brownlee and I am speaking today on behalf of myself and Tamara Pappin. Tam and I are beyond thrilled to accept such a meaningful position within the College. Together we hope to achieve a number of goals this year and speak with pride in sharing them. Aside from working closely with the Student Wellbeing Centre, home to Mrs Dight-Stone, Miss Hearne and Mrs Landy, we aspire to ensure the graduating class of Norwood have a content and comfortable year. Through the means of activities such as relaxation sessions and Yoga we hope to promote mindfulness across all year levels of the school, that is drawing ones attention to the present moment. You’ll find us attending a number of events such as the Breakfast Club and R u ok Day. We would also like to work with the younger year levels, encouraging self-affirmation. Riley Underwood: Prefect (Environmental) I am Riley Underwood, your Environmental Prefect. In this role it’s my duty to assess the Norwood grounds and environmental situation at Norwood, then develop strategies to improve it. I look forward to presenting ideas at the College Council facilities meetings.

Jesse Poole and Tim O’Brien: Prefect (Sports) Sport has been a passion of ours from a very young age. Over the years, we have always participated in as much sport as possible and as a ‘Sport Prefect’ we encourage others to do the same. We are always positive and try our hardest, no matter how difficult the task may seem. We are confident that our Prefect team will work effectively together to improve our learning environment. We understand how precious time is and will therefore work to ensure our Prefect team is as productive as possible. Naomi Martin: Prefect (Performing Arts) I am Naomi Martin and I have the privilege of being Performing Arts Prefect for 2018. Lots of planning has already begun for the year. The Music Department has created a new program called ‘Music Mentors’ where the senior music students mentor the Year 7s and 8s. The Drama Department has started rehearsing for the magical play ‘Mary Poppins’. This musical is filled with magic, jokes, love and so much more. Keep your eyes out for when tickets go on sale during Term 2. In my spare time you’ll see me singing around the house which I’ve done since I was 2, hanging out with my little sister who is 6 or just doing homework. I cannot wait for what the rest of the year unfolds and I can’t wait to see both the Music Department, Drama Department and the whole school community grow. I love working with the rest of the Prefect team, they are a bunch of amazing people.

YEAR 9 OUTDOOR RECREATION NEWS

Our Year 9s have been participating in lots of activities in the last couple of weeks. Our snorkeling day at Portsea was very successful with all students enjoying a boat trip out to “Popes Eye” and “Chinaman’s Hat” in the middle of Port Phillip Bay. Students snorkeled around Popes Eye, a marine sanctuary, seeing lots of fish life and marine habitats. It is also the only nesting site for the Australasian Gannet, a seabird that can dive up to 30 metres underwater. At Chinaman’s Hat, the students got up close and personal with Australian Fur Seals which was a highlight. These playful animals seemed to enjoy our company and were very lively in the water, the students enjoyed the day and the wildlife that was encountered.

Last week our students participated in a Rock Climbing session at ‘Hardrock Climbing’ in Nunawading. This session challenges many students and provides them with an opportunity to step outside their comfort zone. All students were able to complete some climbs with many students making it all the way to the top - 20 metres in the air. This activity also improves the student’s ability to trust each other as they “belay” for their partners and look after them while climbing the walls. The students were very responsible and demonstrated excellent persistence and effort. We are currently preparing for our next exciting activity – a 3 day hiking experience in the Cathedral Ranges. We have been doing some cooking and menu planning, looking at safety and selection of campsites and studying strategies that minimize the impact on the environment. Students are responsible for planning their own menu and cooking their own food. They will carry all that they require for the 3 days into camp, in their hiking packs. It should be a great experience and students are looking forward to the challenge.

LOTE NEWS

The Languages Faculty has had a busy start to the year and I would like to welcome Sarah Davis as our newest teacher in the department. This year, Sarah is teaching a range of junior French classes in Years 7, 8 and 9. All classes have begun the year positively. The Year 7s have started their French studies at Secondary School particularly well and have now learnt to introduce themselves, greet their friends and teachers, and count to 20. They have also been introduced to French culture and have created a collage demonstrating their knowledge of things that are typically French, including, fashion, food, sport, animals, events, buildings, celebrities and much more. The 8s, 9s and 10s have also started well, reviewing grammar and vocabulary from previous years and beginning new topics. The senior class has gotten straight down to business, having their first SAC this week and have been mainly focusing on youth issues in France. I would also like to alert the Norwood Languages Community the French Film Festival is currently running at Palace cinemas across Melbourne. The closest cinema to Norwood is Balwyn and I would encourage French students at any level to make the effort and see a film. The more exposure to French you have outside the classroom, the better your aural comprehension will be, not to mention vocabulary and cultural knowledge too. GIRLS IN MEDICAL RESEARCH DAY NORWOOD STUDENTS VISIT GOVERNMENT HOUSE As part of the Science faculties goal of more girls’ in science and the promotion of student excellence and in support of college goals for rigour, excellence and high aspirations, the Science faculty offered senior girls the opportunity to visit leading Medical Research Scientists and have a tour of Government House!! Students attending were in awe as to the majesty of Government House and hopefully were inspired to pursue tertiary study and contribute positively to society and represent Norwood in the future as Norwood alumni. Four Year 11 students had the awesome opportunity to attend a "Meet a Scientist Day" organised by the Royal Woman's Hospital at Government House. Her Excellency, the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria opened the proceedings with a heartfelt, welcoming speech to the students wishing them all the best for their future studies. Six Scientists presented to the girls outlining their experiences, research and journey to their chosen science career. The girls were fascinated and interested in the individual journeys that each Scientist took and the advice they gave the girls was invaluable.

Three of our Year 9 classes studying Geography this semester, completed their Tourism Fieldwork at Phillip Island on Tuesday, 6 March. We were fortunate to have great weather, with light winds, for this mainly outdoor activity. Students collected primary data at the Penguin Parade and the Nobbies to permit a comparison of these two major tourist attractions, before completing a land use survey in Cowes along Thompson Road. Year 8 students will be starting their Geography Fieldwork on Friday 9, March with 8B and 8C visiting Hampton Beach and Brighton Beach to look at how Coastal Environments are managed. Students will have to evaluate the environmental and social impacts of the bathing boxes on Brighton Beach. Denis Belle, Humanities Coordinator

INTERMEDIATE BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL We had 6 teams of Intermediate boys and girls representing Norwood at the Division Volleyball competition on Tuesday, 27 February. All teams demonstrated excellent teamwork and sportsmanship with their skills developing as the day went on. In the boys draw, Norwood, Ringwood and Mooroolbark all finished the day on equal points. Norwood will progress to the Region level though as we won the most sets for the day. I truly believe that we were the best team on the day and the boys will have a great opportunity at the Region level. Norwood B’s also finished equal first with Ringwood in their pool. Our Intermediate Girls’ were also very competitive and were extremely unlucky not to advance to the next round. Our Girls finished 2nd in the A pool, 3rd in the B pool and 1st in the C pool. All our teams were very strong and hopefully they stick together for 2019 as there is a lot of talent amongst the group. Well done everybody! John Jagintavicius and Helen Lawrence, Volleyball Coaches

SENIOR BOYS’ TENNIS Congratulations to our Senior Boys’ Tennis teams who played on a beautiful sunny day at the Ringwood Tennis Club on the Monday, 19 February. All 15 students played extremely well and had a fun day competing against Melba and Ringwood. There were some fantastic matches played on the day with an enthralling contest against Ringwood to finish the day. The Boys’ A team were locked in a 2 all draw after all singles matches were played with 2 doubles matches to come. With great determination and resilience, Norwood won both doubles matches to advance to the next round. A special mention should go out to Scott Beveridge, Jack Beveridge, Adam Surgeon, Connor Pitt and Jesse Poole.

VET SPORT AND RECREATION CANOEING Last week our VET Sport and Recreation students were given the opportunity to learn and develop their Canoeing and Kayaking skills along the banks of Warrandyte. For many students, it was their first time in either a canoe or kayak. The students were taught various paddling techniques, sweeps and strokes all in anticipation for the various rapids they would experience as we canoed down the rivers. The students quickly learnt the importance of spacing themselves out as we did experience a few bottlenecks as they slowly went through various rapids. The students had a great time with a few capsizes and lots of friendly banter. On the third day we headed out to Westerfolds Park where students were introduced to paddling kayaks and the sport of Canoe Polo. There were definitely a few nervous students as they entered the water for the first time. Laughs were a plenty whenever anybody capsized but it was all in good jest. Aiden Pemberton was a star in the Kayak and Flynn Hubbard looked more than comfortable on the water. Many thanks to Tara Munford and Annie Hearne who gave up their valuable time to accompany the students on these days. I would also like to thank all the students who were on their best behaviour and made it an enjoyable experience for all. John Jagintavicius, Head of Interschool Sports

Term 4: 8 October to 21 December

TERM DATES

YEAR 7 LIBRARY TRANSITION We welcomed all Year 7 students for a Library session during transition at the beginning of the term, where they learnt about our resources, online catalogue, and large fiction collection. It has been wonderful to see so many of our students return at recess and lunchtime to gather and socialise, read, borrow books to take home, and play board games.

EBOOKS The Library has been expanding an eBook collection for interested students, who can borrow from https://norwoodlibrary.wheelers.co/ eBooks can be read on student laptops, iPads, phones, or any other compatible device at home, and are a fun and accessible reading option. We also encourage students with reading difficulties to explore eBooks – changing the text size or adjusting colour backgrounds has been shown to facilitate ease of reading.

HOUSE READING CHALLENGE Norwood has run the Premiers’ Reading Challenge at Years 7 and 8 for several years now, however this year we are trying something different – a Norwood House Reading Challenge! Students in Year 7 will represent their school house: Mullum, Maroondah, Yarra or Kalinda (Year 8 students will also be able to opt in to the Challenge if they wish). The house with the most books read by the end of the Challenge will be announced winners and celebrate with prizes and a pizza lunch in the Library. Inspired by the Hogwarts houses in Harry Potter, we will be filling jars in the Library to represent the level of each house throughout the challenge. More details coming soon.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY DISPLAY Thursday, 8 March 2018 is International Women’s Day, and to celebrate we displayed books by/and about inspiring women in Australia and across the globe. From the youngest person to sail solo around the world: Jessica Watson, to female education activist Malala Yousafzai, we have some amazing biographies available. The display also spotlights female authors who initially published under ambiguous/male names (including J.K Rowling Harry Potter)...come in and read more to learn why! Kathy Kirkwood, Kate Atkinson, Kerri Jones, Library Team
