The Head teacher’s Office, Caldecote Community Primary

School,Leicester

Classrooms, Caldecote Community Primary School, Leicester. 8 th June 2020

To the Teaching staff,

I would like your support with my proposal to reduce break time for KS2 children. Break and lunchtime at Caldecote make up a total of 6 hours and 40 minutes throughout the week. In my opinion, that is a significant amount of time being wasted with children simply running around and not participating in learning. My suggestion is to remove first break entirely and reduce lunchtime from 60 minutes (one hour) to 30 minutes (half an hour), which is adequate time for the children to eat, use the toilet and get some fresh air. Here I have outlined my main reasons for making this proposal.

First and foremost, a schools purpose is for children to learn; children get to play when they are at home. Some may argue that break-time is vital for children to relax throughout the day. I, on the other hand, disagree because they are able to relax from 3pm (when our school day ends) until their bedtimes. Additionally, children have the weekends and school holidays to play. Increasing the amount of learning time is crucial for the children because it will increase the progress they make so it will improve the amount of opportunities available to them when they are older, allowing them to have a brighter future.

Furthermore, statistics show that break and lunch times are when the school has to deal with the most friendship problems and medical emergencies. By reducing the amount of time the children are at break, we will reduce the chances of children falling out with each other. In addition, the increased amount of learning time will allow us to spend more time teaching PSHE, where we can equip the children with strategies to deal with friendship problems in the future.

Finally, I strongly believe that it is a waste of teacher’s time to look after children at break. Reducing the amount of break time will reduce the amount of time teachers have to spend supervising children during unstructured play, and allow them to the job they are trained to do: inspire the children with their learning.

To conclude, I consider it my responsibility to do what is best for the children (even if they may disagree), and reduce the amount of break time. In my experience, the more learning time the children have, the better progress they will make. Consequently, they will perform better in their assessments, have fewer friendship problems and be well prepared for the challenges of secondary school.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Alcock

Maths WALT: explore a finding all possibilities puzzle – Potter’s Potions

This week, we will be exploring ‘finding all possibilities’ puzzles.

In today’s puzzle, Harry Potter wants to make a potion to turn Professor Snape into a giant toadstool. Here are the ingredients and recipe:

Harry needs 24 legs in his recipe to make it work. He can choose from adding spiders, lizards, bats, or a combination of the animals.

e.g. 3 x spiders = 24 legs or 3 x lizards + 6 x bats = 24 legs

How many different ways can you make the potion? Can you find a way to work systematically to identify all the different ways? Can you find an effective way to record the potions you have created?

Extension: can you investigate any of these potions?

Well done, shape monsters! If you are missing numbers, have a game of “timestable rock stars” when you are done. Now have a lovely lunch – and don’t forget to practice an attitude of gratitude by saying thank you to the person who made it for you!

WALT: consider dangers that can occur when walking to school

As you move on to high school, some of you will be allowed to walk independently for the first time.

Think for yourself or discuss with the people in your household: What might be dangerous when walking to school? How can we keep ourselves and our friends safe when walking

together?

If you can, watch these videos to collect ideas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cojk9A6ASvk stranger danger https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SX3LZ29x45A being a pedestrian https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxHBVgM9zfg crossing the road

If you can, print and colour the safety poster below – who is in danger and how could they be safer? You could make a list.

If you can’t print it, design your own safety poster about walking to school safely.

Well done! Part of growing up is learning how to keep yourself safe without an adult there to do it for you. Nice work!

English WALT: explore the language of a persuasive letter.

Read another persuasive letter below. 6AT

St Thomas Primary School, Main Road, Colchester

The Head Teacher’s Office St Thomas Primary School, Main Road, Colchester.

Dear Mr Prince,

I am writing to you to discuss the matter of playtimes. Your new announcement to ban playtimes is ridiculous. Do you really think that this will help our education? What an absurd suggestion! Therefore, I am on a quest to gain our playtimes back.

Firstly, you must consider how this will affect the behaviour of the children. They need time to sort out their thoughts and ideas; they had a chance to do that during playtimes but now they simply cannot. Consequently, pupils’ brains will have difficulty in processing the information that it needs to and all of their worries and work will become confused leading to poor behaviour. Due to recent studies, children are more likely to misbehave the more they are told off, which you will surely have to do more because all of the confused minds that we will have in our school. Therefore, there is nothing you can do, apart from give our playtimes back.

Furthermore, playtimes gave children a time to socialise and chat with their friends: now they cannot. Because the young boys and girls will not have an opportunity to share any news that they may have, they will obviously become chattier in their lessons. Everyone knows that the children need to

Page 16: primarysite-prod-sorted.s3.amazonaws.com€¦  · Web viewLovely Year Six, So… week 3 of the last summer term. You only have 20 days of primary school left. How crazy is that?

have time to be with each other and to learn how to socialise. Many people understand that school is not just about work – so why can you not see this too?

In addition to the exceedingly good points above, health experts believe that heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, lung disease and breathing difficulties are just a few of the conditions that children could suffer from in their later life if they are not healthy enough. Even though they can exercise after school, many do not, preferring to watch T.V and play on their consoles. There is no doubt that it is a school’s responsibility to promote healthy lifestyles. Do you really want to take the risk of shortening our lives? Keeping healthy is an extremely important part of our lives (in fact the most important).

After hearing just a few of my points, I hope you seriously consider my feelings and that you will change your mind about playtimes. We all really, really love our breaks – and we will all really, really love you (as a head) if you give us what we want. I wait for your response with anticipation.

Yours sincerely,

Lisa Colley

WALT: think about car safety

Some of you may be travelling to school by car. As you get older, you might be travelling with older siblings driving or even driving your own car.

Think for yourself or discuss with the people in your household: What are the rules for safe car travel? Why is it important to wear a seatbelt when travelling in the car? What can you do if you think the driver of the car you are in is not

driving safely?

The adverts below have all been shown on British TV. They are about car safety. Some of them are a little bit graphic – but don’t worry, the people in the adverts are just actors! However, the message is real. Watch these adverts and think about the message.

Product / Service Design and QualityNow you need to start thinking in more detail about the product you have planned and why your customers will buy it. Here are some questions to help with your planning:

What will we need to make our product?

Do we have the budget to buy everything we need? Do we need to buy everything, or we can look at other options?

How will we make our product / service be the best and stand out from the competition?

When do we need to have the product/service ready by?

Do we need to provide our customers with any information about the product or service?

What checks can we make before a product/service is ready to sell?

How can we make sure all our products/services will offer the same quality?

PSHE – RSE lesson 3

WALT: understand how my body changes and grows during puberty

In RSE today, we are going to be recapping all the things we learnt about puberty last week.

Remember, puberty is the time when your body changes from being a child’s body into being an adult’s body. It usually happens between the ages of 9 and 18, although everyone’s body is different so it will happen at its own rate!

You could re-watch these videos which give you a lot more information about the changes that happen to boys, girls and your emotions during puberty:

Boys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDmTeU6H40s Girls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_mFJ2d0qxQ Emotions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Dg2eMCx9TE

If you do not have the internet, read the factsheets again from last week.

Now let’s learn a bit more about periods this week!Menstruation (or ‘getting your period’) is probably the biggest change that girls go through. You could watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RX4NJrJxwss to learn more and read the fact-sheet on the next page.

Your task today is to help the children who have written to an agony aunt about their worries about puberty below. For each child, what advice would you given them? You could write or draw your answers.

This is really tricky learning to do on your own. Remember, talk to your mum, dad, nana, grandad, carer, big brother or big sister. They’ve all been through it. You are not alone and puberty is nothing to worry about. It’s an exciting time for you!

We are also here if you need a chat – [email protected] or call us at school.

embarrassed when we get changed for PE. What should I do?

All the boys in my class keep going on about how fit the girls are. I don’t get it. I just don’t fancy girls. Does that make me gay? Am I

normal?

I am the tallest boy in my class. I think I look really stupid compared with the

other kids because I am so lanky. What should I do about it?

I am really worried about getting my period. My big sister says it is

awful and it will really hurt. Everyone will know and they will laugh at me. I don’t want to talk to my mum about it because I am embarrassed. What should I do?

Sometimes at night my penis does this weird thing - I think it’s called getting an erection. Sometimes I

wake up and it is all wet down there. Have I weed myself? Is there

something wrong with me?

I just feel really angry all the time.

What should I do?

I am WAY hairier than all the other kids in my class. Some of them call me “the wolf”.

What can I do about it? So there’s this girl I really like in my school. She is really pretty and cool. Sometimes I think she likes me too

because she smiles a me a lot. I really want to kiss her. How do I go about it?

WALT: consider what to do in different situationsRead the scenarios below. These are things which could happen on the way to/from school when you are travelling to high school.

Think and discuss with a member of your family if you can – what would you do if that happened to you?

Create a response to the scenarios: you could explore one by writing a story, drawing a comic strip, writing a letter, drawing a picture or acting it out.

Milan’s big brother, Akansh, is giving him a lift to school. His brother is not wearing a seatbelt and he drives too fast. Milan does not like it. He tells Akansh to slow down but Akansh just laughs at Milan and scares him by

Fiver WALT: create a sales pitch

Imagine that you are trying to get people to give your business money to sell our product or service. This is also known as investing. Now that you have your product in your mind, it’s time to pitch it to our very own investing Dragons!

Today we are going to create a sales pitch for our product. Use the prompt below to think about what you would say in your pitch to persuade someone to invest.

Writing A Great Sales Pitch

It is important to be able to say what your business would do. Include:

1. What your business would sell and why?2. Why people would buy it?3. Add something you found out in the market research4. How much profit you would make? Profit is the difference between the money you make and the money you spend e.g. if you make a cake and the ingredients cost £2 and then you sell the cake for £3, the profit will be £15. Why people should invest in you – why are you unique?

Nice work team. We think you could all be excellent entrepreneurs one day!

Today is National Picnic Day in the USA.

Can you plan a meal that you could eat as a picnic in your garden? What food would you take? What games might you play?

If you could go anywhere, where would you have your picnic and who would you want to be with?

If you are feeling really adventurous, why not make your picnic dreams come true and have a garden picnic with your family?

Well done beautiful humans! You’ve nearly made it through the week and that was fabulous work today. We hope you have something nice planned for your weekend with your family!

PREPARING AND PRESENTING YOUR SALES PITCHIt is important that you can talk about what your team has chosen to do and then imagine that you are trying to get people to invest in your product or service in less than a minute. This is where your sales pitch comes in.Use the box below to make your plans – talk about your team, what you’re selling/offering, who might buy it and how much money you think you might make and why?60 seconds is not very long so you’ll need to practice – who can help, listen to you and give you some feedback?

Here’s some Presentation Tips to think about- Speak clearly and at a calm pace – not too fast or they won’t understand you- Stand still - it can be distracting if you move around too much- Look at your audience when speaking to them – use notes but don’t read from the paper for the

whole minute if you don’t need to - Be interested in what you are saying, and your audience will be too!- Practice what you are going to say and remember don’t go over 60 seconds

Maths WALT: explore a finding all possibilities puzzle – two dice

Today we are continuing to explore ‘finding all possibilities’ puzzles. Today’s puzzle is about rolling two dice.

If you roll two dice, and add the numbers on the top faces together, how many different scores can you get?

Can you work systematically to find all the possibilities? How will you know that you have got them all?

You could use this table to record all the possible answers. Fill the yellow squares with the correct totals, according to the number on each die:

die 1 die 2

Colour or create something

Today is National Wrong Trousers Day.

Eachyear there is a fundraising day where people wear the wrong trousers to work, inspired by the Wallace and Gromit animation. It raises money for the Children’s Hopsital in Bristol.

After today’s learning is a colouring you could do, or you could draw a picture of someone wearing the wrong trousers – maybe of Mr Alcock in his pyjama bottoms rather than his suit trousers!

Great work this morning! You’ve definitely earned your lunch. Ask your parent/carer if you can help them. Remember to use your manners to show you appreciate what they do for you.

Review your week!

Review your week!

Now that you have completed another week away from school, can you reflect on how it has been?

You could make notes, draw or talk to someone, answering these questions:

What have you enjoyed this week? What could have been better? How can you change it for next week? What have you learnt this week? Who has helped you this week? How could you show that person that you are grateful?

Now look back over the work you have created this week. Do you feel proud? You should – we think you are amazing!
