Science - Living Things – Habitats

What is a habitat? It is the natural home of an animal or plant.

Follow the link and watch the videos to learn about different types of habitats and think about why those animals live there…

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zx882hv

Complete the ‘Odd one out’ quiz below, look at each habitat and the pictures of the animals. Can you work out which animal doesn’t belong? Discuss why the odd one out doesn’t belong in that habitat. Circle the odd one out and then think of a new animal that would fit in that habitat instead!

Geography- Identifying seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK

What is weather? What is the weather like where we live in the UK? Is it the same all year round? Think about how the change of seasons can affect the weather. Follow the link and watch the video to learn more!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uo8lbeVVb4M

Using the template below, keep a weather diary for the week. You can draw a symbol to show the type of weather and describe what it is like outside each day. Do you notice any patterns? If you have a thermometer, you could even record the temperature!

P.S.H.E.- Anti-bullying

What is bullying? What would you do if you thought someone was being bullied? It is very important that we have an awareness about what bullying is and who we can talk to for help. Look at the ‘Anti-bullying’ PowerPoint on the Year 2 Homework Page to think about how we can prevent bullying in our school.

Using the template below, design your own anti-bullying wristband that you could cut out and wear to show your support for anti –bullying. Why not make them for your family members too? We would love to see some of your designs!

D.T.- Design a product for a user

Your slider mechanism could move side to side or up and down – think about which direction you would like your rainforest animal to move in.

E.g. If you have chosen a parrot you may want it to fly up and down but if you have chosen a jaguar, you may want it to run from side to side hunting for its prey.

You could test out the two different mechanisms to decide which will work best for your sliding picture.

Don’t worry if you have changed your mind about your plan from last week – D.T is all about making plans and changing them to improve them and make them better! It is okay if you would like to change your idea for your background or the animal that you have chosen!

Art- Learn about the work of artists

Look through ‘All about Mondrian’ PPT on the Year 2 Homework Page, which tells you about Piet Mondrian, a famous artist.

Have a go at creating your own piece of artwork in the style of Mondrian, using primary colours, shapes and lines. You could collage, paint or use crayons. Below are some examples to get your started.

Collage

Paint

Music- Lyrics

Did you work out the tune to the ‘Layers of the Rainforest’ song? It was to the tune of ‘If you’re happy and you know it’!

Using the lyrics that you started learning last week, practise singing the ‘Layers of the Rainforest’ to this instrumental version of the song:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6zpfu2HODE

Instrumental means that you will not hear anyone singing the lyrics – this means that you can sing along with the lyrics of ‘Layers of the Rainforest’ but it will be the tune of If you’re happy and you know it’.

When you are confident recalling the lyrics, add some actions to help you remember what it is like in each layer of the rainforest and which animals live there – you could use some of the children’s actions from the video last week!

Change the Verbs!

Past or present tense? Look at the verb! The rainforest looks like a sea of beautiful colours. _________The parrot squawked loudly in the tree. _________The Kapok tree stands in the centre. _________The snake slides along the tree trunk. _________The leaves bristled in the warm breeze. _________

Complete the table – change the verbs to the past and present tense.

If you find it tricky, use the verb in a sentence e.g. ‘The bird fly through the trees’ – does it make sense? What would we say if the bird had already done this or if the bird was doing it now?

Do you notice anything about the past tense verbs? We know that to change a verb to the past tense, we add -ed but does this always make sense?

Add ‘sWe know how to use apostrophes in contractions e.g. do not > don’t.We also use apostrophes to show that something belongs to someone e.g. Year 2’s assembly, Helen’s bag, Paul’s job, the dog’s tail.

We add ‘s to whoever it belongs to, not what they own e.g. the cat tail’s doesn’t make sense. Watch the short video to help you: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvwwxnb/articles/zx9ydxs

Have a go at re-writing the sentences below or editing them adding ‘s to whoever it belongs to.

The man axe strikes the trunk of the tree.

The monkey howl echoes around the rainforest.

The parrot wings flap in the breeze.

The snake body slides along the trunk.

The jaguar tail drapes over the branch.

The flower petals are dripping with raindrops.

The Kapok tree trunk stands in the centre.

The man forehead is dripping with sweat.

The snake hiss sounds like rustling leaves.

The jaguar spots camouflage him beneath the leaves.

The frog croak can be heard in the distance.

Edit the Text

This text is written in the present tense. Are there any mistakes that you notice that you need to edit in the text? Look out for verbs that are not written in the correct tense and any missing apostrophes.

You can either edit the text or re-write it changing the verbs and adding in the missing apostrophes.

The exhausted, overworked man rest next to the almighty, colossal Kapok tree. The man forehead dripped with beads of sweat. The snake scaly, patterned skin slide along the solid trunk of the tree. The parrot bright, colourful wings flap in the warm, humid breeze. The hairy, howling monkey swinged from branch to branch and vine to vine. The jaguar spots disguise him behind the emerald, green leaves and his tail swish from side to side. The rainforest is filled with sounds of the frog croak, the monkey howl and the snake hiss. The flower petals are covering with clear, tropical raindrops bounced off the leaves above.

How many mistakes have you edited? Re-read it after you have finished editing – does it make sense now?

Can you write your own description about what it looks like in your house? Try to use apostrophes to show that something belongs, think carefully about the verbs you use and include noun phrases to describe.

Can you spot the spelling pattern? Write down all of the words that you notice have the same spelling pattern.

Can you learn and recite poem? You could perform it to your family adding actions to make it even more interesting!

You could use the words you have found to make up your own poem!
