From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher

COVER PHOTO: Maths in action with Year 3.

We have enjoyed another busy week of learning and everyone is working very hard to make sure we address any learning gaps with the young people as quickly as possible. As you will know we are holding our online Parent Progress Meetings next Tuesday 4th May. The purpose of the meetings is to share with you our observations from our formal assessments and to help you understand the focus areas for your child’s leaning over the coming term. We know that children make accelerated progress if there is reinforced support at home.

We hope that you have found the online booking system easy to use, if you have encountered any difficulties, please contact either your class teacher or the main office, who will be happy to help. It is important that we meet with every parent. To help the teachers on the evening, please make sure you log on for your appointment time promptly. We hope that all meetings will go smoothly, but as you will know this is our first time organising parent/carer meetings in this way.

Please be reminded that there is no school on Monday 3rd May due to the Bank Holiday and that school will finish early on Tuesday 4th May to allow for the meetings to take place with your child’s class teacher, timings listed below:

Reception & Year 1 – 12.00pm

Year 6 & Year 2 – 12.10pm

Year 3 & Year 4 – 12.20pm

Year 5 – 12.30pm

It is important that the children are collected promptly at the above times to help the teachers get organised and prepared for the online meetings and to also ensure the children are not in contact with other year groups as they leave the school, hence the staggered finish times.

Home Testing Kits Statistically one in three people with Covid are asymptomatic and do not have any symptoms. Unfortunately, this means that any number of people can be transmitting the disease without knowing. All Primary school staff are now required to take two lateral flow tests each week to ensure that if necessary, we isolate as quickly as possible to stop further transmission. Secondary staff and pupils are required to do the same. Whilst this is not required for primary age pupils, as families you are now able to order lateral flow test kits to be taken at home.

Here are the links for ordering as a household:

Composer/Artist of the Fortnight

For the next few weeks we will be listening to and learning about Carl Orff as our Composer of the Fortnight. As a suggested activity to support at home, you could

gather some facts about Orff in preparation for the coming weeks.

You can find out some facts and hear some of his music on the following links.

Well done to Aryan in Year 5 who spent time over the break helping out at the Welcome Centre, the local support centre for homeless people across Ilford. Great to see Aryan putting his BRIDGES characteristics to good use and helping others.

Last week, Johnson defeated Tailleferre to close the gap to three points at the top of the table. Al-Kashi continue to be the form side with another victory over Cartwright and find themselves in mid table having been bottom at Christmas. Elsewhere there were victories for: Ramanujan, Vivaldi, Rahman, Lovelace and Einstein.

3This week, Year 3 have

been using their noticing skills in maths to read

scales when measuring volume and objects in class. It was important for them to understand

different scales of measurement and

how to work out what each interval is worth along each scale. They have had a great time working in pairs, using

their collaboration skills and comparing volume

when using different sized containers as well.

Excellent work year 3!

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase“We build too many walls and not enough bridges.”

Isaac Newton

BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner.

There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be in-troduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certifi-cate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week.

Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

30 April 2021 Primary Newsletter 15

At School • We would all like to see the children develop the habits listed above, as they

are all essential lifelong skills that are needed for us to successfully manage our way through school, college, and university and certainly throughout our work careers. It is really important that whilst the children are young that we help them develop these habits as quickly as possible – especially organisation, independence and hard work.

• At school we ensure the pupils understand that every action has a consequence and that when we work hard it can often reap satisfaction and reward. Our pupils work hard day to day to earn their merits for making good choices and demonstrate their efforts.

• To help the children understand the structure of each day and become better organised, we always start with a visual timetable in Reception. A picture represents each part of the day; this helps the children to understand the daily routines.

• It is important that that we teach the young people to become more organised and check that they have all of their belongings with them each day..

At Home• At home the children need to practise getting dressed and undressed, managing

buttons on shirts and coats etc. and generally become more independent. • Helping your child to get organised the night before will help to ensure they

have everything they need for their day. It may help to create a visual/pictorial timetable at home to help your child become more organised and to think about when they need their PE kit, home learning, guided reading book etc. This could be displayed in your child’s room or in a central place like the kitchen where you can both check what is needed the night before, ready for the following day. This will allow your child to become more involved in preparing for their learning each day and gaining independence.

• It is also good to remind your child, as we do in school, to check regularly that they have all of the belongings with them.

• Congratulate your child’s effort when you see them working hard and for showing an increased motivation with their home learning or reading.

• Talk to your child about how your own effort to practise and work hard at something led to success and a good feeling of achievement.
