My Education JourneyQampA with Ms Hostick Teacher of English

Q Could you tell us which A levels you studied and whyA English Language and Literature Psychology and General Studies

Q Which universities did you apply to and why A That was a LONG time ago As far as I can rememberhellip Glasgow Stirling Northumbria Sheffield Hallam Lancaster Hull

Q Which university did you actually go to and why A Glasgow University mainly because it was the furthest from home sort of because it had

a great music scene in the late 90s and also because I liked the course structure ndash a Scottish degree (that makes you take 3 subjects for two years) really accommodated my broad interests THENhellip after working in offices and a library (which I found really boring ndash donrsquot tell Mr Butler or Ms Atkinson) for about 3 years (including a stint in Denmark as a Language Assistant in a college) I went back to University This time at Hull School of Art and Design to study a Foundation Degree in Textile Design I studied this course part-time whilst working part-time as a Teaching Assistant at Hull College

Q Can you tell us about the degree course you studied at GlasgowA At Glasgow Uni I took a Major in English Literature but it included study of English Literature English Language Philosophy Scottish Literature French and Humanities Computing (basic HTML and Web Design with a Humanities focus) because I was interested in learning more about all of these things

Q Irsquom guessing this reflects the Scottish education systemrsquos preference for students engaging with a wider range of subjects for a longer period of time which is how their Highers (the equivalent of our lsquoArsquo levels) are structured What would you say are the pros and cons of doing a degree which covered such a range of subjects A The cons of doing a broad range of subjects is that it takes a lot of juggling to make sure that you are doing as well as you possibly can in each subject However that is totally outweighed by the pros and what I find most important in life ndash being a well-rounded interesting interested creative and open-minded person

Q Did you have any kind of clear idea what you wanted to do with that degreeA I had no idea I was following my heart and doing what I knew I would enjoy as studying for enjoyment and for education without a focus on career is (and was) far more important to me

Also I was the first in my family to go to University (both parents being from working class backgrounds and leaving school at 14 and 15) so I had absolutely no idea where it would take me Only that it is always a good idea to learn (my dad taught me that)

Q And what did you do in HullA At Hull School of Art and Design I took a Foundation Degree in Textiles because I liked the artistic and experimental nature of the course It also enabled me to develop my skills in drawing printing knitting embroidery and CAD (using Photoshop and Illustrator)

Q Looking back do you think it would have been better to have gone for the Textile Design course from the start or would that not have been possible without your first degree and work experience (Which could give some students hope that their lsquoArsquo level choices havenrsquot scuppered their futures after allhellip) A In retrospect I am glad that I was able to do both study pathways English and Textiles were the only A grades I got at GCSE and when I started my A-Levels I didnrsquot feel it was the right choice to pursue an artistic path

Having studied Textile design from the age of 24 to 27 meant that I did a much better job at it than I would have done had I been younger I was much more dedicated to my success in that course

Q What interestingfunworthwhile things did you do outside your studies at uni A I had a job in a fabric shop in Glasgow I also joined the student radio station SubCity Radio starting as a member of the new music team then having my own show and working as a producer on other peoplersquos shows and eventually becoming the Station Manager in my final year When at Hull School of Art and Design I worked to pay the fees

Q Do you have any regrets about educationalcareer choices you made in the past Or equally is there a decision you made that you are particularly happy about in retrospect A I love the fact that I never really knew what I was going to go on to do but enjoyed choosing to do what interested me at the time and therefore creating a rich tapestry of experience knowledge and skills You canrsquot regret doing anything if itrsquos for the right reasons at the time you chose to do them

Q If you could give your 16 year old self advice about the future what would it be A Remember that it all works out fine in the end

Q Your journey hasnrsquot been exactly a direct path from A to Bhellip is there a message you could share with our INA students about their own career pathsA The world is changing and jobs are changing and many of them will be working in jobs that we donrsquot even know about yet so they need to be prepared to be adaptable creative and open-minded about their futures Following a certain route of study because it makes you happy can be just as enjoyable fulfilling and interesting than doing something because it guarantees a good career
