Newsleer 2017 June 23 - Week 10, Term 2 The 2017 Primary Athletics Carnival was a blast! Livingstone, Carey, Wycliffe, and Aylward went head to head on a fantastic sporty day to try and win the carnival. There were some really tough competitors on each team! Everyone had so much fun! First up was the 800m run. That certainly got everyone puffed out. At 11:00, all the houses sat in their house groups on the oval and did their cheers. The Marines were judging the cheers which was very hard but they finally chose Livingstone for the best cheer, then came Aylward, Wycliffe then Carey. For lunch there were frozen poppers and sausages that the kind parent helpers had thoughtfully prepared. After the Primary relays, we had a relay for the Senior students, parents, Marines and teachers. It was so funny to watch! Although the adult relay points didn’t get added to the scores, it was still good to see them getting involved. I’ve never seen Mr Parkin run so fast! All and all it was such a fun experience and we can’t wait till the next one! For more on the Primary Carnival, see page 3... Luca Woods and Alicia Buchanan - Year 6 students Primary Athletics

As I sit in the cool of the morning waiting for the sun to rise and listening to the chirping birds,

I am grateful and in this gratitude I rejoice.

The awareness of the privilege of serving at Marrara Christian College is heightened.

Working at a Christian School has many benefits. Mostly though, I get to indulge 2 passions:

Firstly, I can talk about Jesus and His love for us without restraint or fear of rejection.

Secondly, I get to be with kids and spend time getting to know them and influencing them

for good.

And I know I am not alone. I am part of the Marrara team who share my unbridled joy in doing

both. I also know this is not by accident. It has been planned and executed by God in His

wisdom and for His glory. This is another reason to be grateful and rejoice.

As we go into the semester break it is my prayer for our Marrara family to contemplate the

love of our Saviour, His perfect plans for us and our response. My hope is you are grateful

also and that from that gratitude you also rejoice. God bless you.

Deuteronomy 12:7

“There, in the presence of the LORD your God, you and your families shall eat and shall

rejoice in everything you have put your hand to, because the LORD your God has blessed

you.”

Primary Athletics

The Primary Athletics Carnival certainly was a great day! It was great to have lower Primary enjoy their athletics on the same day. As well as some running and long jump, the lower Primary students enjoyed sack races, egg and spoon races and throwing competitions. Years 3-6 rotated around all track and field events and we were impressed with the effort each student put into supporting their Houses and encouraging their peers.

A big thank you to all our volunteers. We also had personnel from US Marine Corps and the Australian Army join us to help run our Carnival and explain a little about their rotation here in Darwin. Another big thank you to our Year 10 Leadership PE class and some Year 12s who came along to help. We can’t run these days without the support of volunteers, so thank you to all those who assisted.

And the winning team… Livingstone!

The Science and Engineering Challenge was held at Charles Darwin University on Tuesday 6th June. Marrara Christian College and Palmerston Christian School entered a combined team of 28 students on the day. The students were divided into 8 teams and each team had to complete a number of challenges. Some teams had all day to construct a Mars lander buggy, a catapult and a bridge to take a specific weight. Other teams completed two tasks on the day. Our combined team finished second overall. Well done to all participants who worked well in their teams and were creative in the activities they completed.

On Monday 19th June, the Middle School had a visit from Andrew ‘Fishtail’ Fisher, a car racing legend with a great story. Andrew’s message of making good choices in life sits well with our RiSe CoDe. Andrew was very entertaining and a great speaker for our end of semester Alternate Curriculum activities.

Have you ever considered what makes some students succeed in their learning, whilst others do not? Is it simply how keen they are to succeed? How well they follow instructions? How much homework they do? In 1985 a group of Middle School teachers in Victoria actively observed students to determine an answer to the question “What are the students who learn well actually doing in the classroom?” This then developed into an unfunded project to stimulate and support effective student learning through specific classroom strategies. The answer to their original question may surprise you.

They identified that ‘Poor learners’ were….

“….all characterised by a passive, dependent, uninformed approach to learning. The learner may well be keen to succeed but sees his or her role as the passive recipient of information and instructions; the teacher (or text) will tell them what to do, how to do it, when to stop, what questions are worth investigating etc…” (Learning from the PEEL experience 1992)

Great learners demonstrate the opposite; they are active, independent, constantly questioning and linking knowledge together.

In Middle School Maths this year we have been noticing great learning and getting excited about it! We have asked students to strive so that the following statements become true of them:

• I use strategies to cope when getting stuck before I ask the teacher• I think ahead and predict possible outcomes• I really try to understand the work, not just ‘do’ it• I do not see assessment tasks as final; I really learn from my mistakes• I explain purposes and results to others so that they can understand• I link back to past lessons and experiences• I think beyond the set work to extend knowledge (what if…? how could…? what happens when…?)

At a recent Middle School assembly we were able to congratulate some students who have consistently demonstrated the characteristics of ‘Great Learners’ this year in Maths.

Aiden Baker, Keziah Dimmick, Hannah Kwon, Amber Tole, Kyana Thorpe and Kirstie Wall all received RiseCode awards for ‘Dedication to their learning in Maths.’

Congratulations to these Great Learners!

The Year 8 Medieval Feast was a wonderful night celebrating the culmination of a term’s study of the Medieval and Renaissance periods in History. The students learned why education became important and that the life we live today is the product of our learning through these times. We explored the wider world and new cultures, technologies and ideas. There was plenty on display - fantastic models of castles and villages, soap sculptures, and of course the students dressed up in medieval costume. There was plenty of great food with an array of lamb and chicken with potatoes, stew, and bread and butter pudding for dessert - all cooked using traditional recipes. We had the Kaos Horde entertain us with medieval fighting displays in full replica costume. It was a fun night despite one or two students landing themselves in the stocks! Our Queen Marian whom the banquet was held in honour of, was well pleased with her loyal subjects’ fine efforts. We were blessed with a wonderful night of fun festivities.

Blessings - the Year 8 Cohort

Grace Opie, a Year 6 student, performed at the NT Dance Eisteddfod last weekend. There was so much talent there and some amazing competition with over 322 acts performing over the whole weekend from the NT and WA. Grace did very well performing her solo dances, winning 2 first place awards in both Tap and Contemporary (12 and under) and she received highly commended for her Hip Hop and Jazz solo’s. She also won the Special Judges Award for most entertaining dancer. Fantastic effort Grace, congratulations on these impressive achievements!
