Considering the number of choices for each component (interior gypsum sheathing, cavity insulation, stud sizes, exterior gypsum sheathing, water resistant barrier (WRB), exterior insulations, WRB, air gap, claddings), one can calculate that the number of possible constructions can reach into the tens of thousands of assemblies. Given that each NFPA 285 assembly test costs approximately $20,000, a manufacturer can spend many millions of dollars achieving compliance with the code for a wide variety of combinations. Pursuant to the discretionary provisions of the building code, the building code officials community allows assemblies which have not been tested under NFPA 285, where NFPA 285 testing has been conducted on worst-case assemblies, and where Engineering Evaluations have been performed which show that a specified alternative assembly can be assumed to perform as well or better than the tested assemblies. Strict rules based on known fire science principles are used to determine allowances of alternate materials. In the case of WRB products, an alternate WRB can substitute for a WRB incorporated in an NFPA 285 tested assembly or approved in a previous Engineering Evaluation if the relative flaming characteristics of the alternate product is the same or better than the baseline product. This is accomplished via Engineering Evaluations such as those written for PROSOCO as discussed below. This document is a compilation of tables of allowed constructions based on NFPA 285 tests, cone calorimeter flaming and combustion studies, and Engineering Evaluations 10261A, -B, -C, -D, -E, -F, -G, - H & -I representing assemblies incorporating XPS and polyisocyanurate exterior insulation products from Atlas, Carlisle, DOW, Hunter, Johns Manville, Owens Corning, and Rmax. The Engineering Evaluations and the attached compilation also cover assemblies utilizing mineral wool insulation, and assemblies with no insulation. The Engineering Evaluations assume utilization of common steel stud, external gypsum sheathing, and cladding assemblies as well as assemblies with back-up walls constructed of CMU or concrete. In each case, NFPA 285 tests were successfully conducted on various configurations of exterior wall system designs incorporating various WRB products as well as Prosoco products. The purpose of these evaluations was to determine engineering extensions for the alternative assemblies that can be expected to meet the requirements of NFPA 285. An analysis was conducted on the components incorporated in assemblies tested under NFPA 285. This allowed the determination of a base wall system from which replacement components can be interchanged. NFPA 285 Tables of Allowed Constructions for Prosoco Products The code requirement for NFPA 285 testing of wall assemblies incorporating combustible components presents an enormous compliance endeavor. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this engineering letter is to determine if a specific wall design can meet NFPA 285. The following diagram was provided. EVALUATION METHOD An existing DOW ESR report (Ref. 1) lists their approved NFPA 285 constructions which includes various WRB products. Based on this, Priest & Associates has written an Engineering Evaluation (EEV, Ref. 4) which allows various Prosoco WRB products to replace the approved WRB products in the Dow ESR based on cone calorimeter flammability comparison data (Ref. 3). The issue to examine is that the construction depicted above does not exactly match the allowed constructions in the ESR or EEV. The main combustibles (other than the FRT wood) are the Prosoco WRB and the Dow Weathermate Plus WRB. There is no foam insulation in this assembly so it is very conservative compared to what Dow is allowed in their ESR report. We list the following points to prove that the proposed wall design can pass the NFPA 285 test:

1) Dow Thermax ESR 1659 allows a wide range of combustible exterior wall designs based on actual 285 tests.

2) Stucco construction and various WRB products (including Dow Weathermate Plus over the insulation/under the stucco) are allowed in the ESR.

3) Priest & Assoc. EEV 10261F allows various Prosoco WRB products to replace the WRB products in the DOW ESR based on cone calorimeter relative flammability data.

4) Data and code allowances allow replacing the steel suds and gypsum wallboard with FRT wood framing and sheathing in Type III walls

5) In the proposed construction, the FRT wood products are behind 2 layers of ⅝ inch type X gypsum wallboard. Ignition of the FRT elements is nearly impossible during a 30 minute NFPA 285 test.

6) Use of noncombustible insulation provides more fire protection than use of Dow Thermax Polyisocyanurate insulation.

Point 1 and 2 This evaluation is based on the Dow ESR report for analysis (Ref. 1). The approval report lists NFPA 285 tests (Item 6.7, Ref. 1) as the basis for the approval. It is assumed that these tests utilized various wall designs incorporating DOW Thermax foam products and a worst case WRB product. In the DOW ESR report, stucco and Dow Weathermate Plus are both allowed in the approved assembly table. Based on

the approved items, this covers four of the elements (Items 7, 8, 9 & 10) in the proposed wall design since they are all elements of typical stucco construction:

10) 7/8 inch stucco Point 3 and 4 Exterior wall tests which utilize a worst case WRB product allow use of other WRB products which tend to perform the same or better. The approval submitted (Ref. 1) lists various types/brands/models of WRB systems. Prosoco flammability data (Ref. 3) indicates that the four Prosoco WRB products listed below perform better than at least one of the approved WRB products listed in the approval (Carlisle Barritech VP). We use peak HRR and Time to Ignition as the comparative data. Ranking of Cone Calorimeter Data When conducting cone calorimeter data comparisons, smaller Peak Heat Release Rate (Pk. HRR) values and longer time to ignition (Tign) values are considered to be improvements (i.e., less flammable). However, data for a given comparison are often conflicting. To resolve these types of discrepancies, researchers (Ref. 6) have used a ranking system and measurement uncertainty (Ref. 7) to organize cone calorimeter data for flammability comparisons. The expression:

Rank = Pk. HRR / Tign Is used to resolve inconsistencies in relative flammability data obtained from the Cone Calorimeter (Ref. 7). Lower HRR and longer Tign make the rank smaller. So, smaller rank materials are considered less flammable than higher rank materials. With that understood, the ranks of the materials being evaluated in this report are show below. Also, the relative error of the HRR in cone calorimeters is approximately 20 - 30% for 1 kW fires, 10% for 3 kW fires and less than 10% for 5 kW fires (Ref. 8). The HRR is the raw HRR (kW) – not the normalized HRR expressed in cone data (kW/m2). For normalized data in the range of 200 kW/m2, the raw heat release rate is 1/100th since the specimen measures 0.01 m x 0.01 m. So the uncertainty in this range is approximately 20%. The HRR uncertainty range of Prosoco R-Guard VB (179 to 269), overlaps that of Barritech VP (144 to 216). So, not only does R-Guard VB data have a smaller rank than Barritech VP, it also falls within the range of uncertainty of Barritech VP.

Point 4 and 5 Exterior wall tests which utilize steel stud base wall systems allow use of the system in Type I, II, III and Type IV construction (see Ref 1, Section 4.3). TYPE IIIA is a construction type which allows fire-retardant-treated wood (FRTW) framing in place of noncombustible steel studs in exterior walls having a fire rating of 2 hours or less. Type IIIA buildings include 2 hour noncombustible loadbearing and nonbearing exterior walls, 1 hour bearing interior walls, 1 hour structural frame, and 1 hour floor and roof construction. The use of fire-retardant-treated wood (FRTW) framing and sheathing in accordance with IBC Section 2303.2 and complying with Section 604.2.1 is allowed in Types III and IV construction within bearing and nonbearing exterior walls with required fire ratings of two hours or less. Types I and II construction also allow for FRT wood (framing and sheathing) in nonbearing exterior walls where a fire rating is not required. The use of FRT framing and sheathing in the exterior walls is not expected to detract from the NFPA 285 performance of the proposed wall systems for the following reasons:

1) The code recognizes an equivalency, between steel studs and FRTW, with FRTW materials considered interchangeable with noncombustible materials in specific exterior wall applications.

2) In ASTM E1354 Cone calorimeter testing, the initial peak Heat Release Rate (Pk HRR) and 1 minute average HRR for FRT plywood are comparable to results for gypsum sheathing (Ref. 5).

3) From the literature (Ref. 6), it has been established that steel stud walls exhibit fire resistance behavior similar to wood stud walls.

4) The building code allowance for the use of FRT framing in lieu of noncombustible materials is predicated on its Class A flame spread rating and the fact that it does not support progressive combustion during the ASTM E84 30 minute fire test. In the E84 30 minute test, FRTW does not spread flame in the E84 test apparatus more than 10.5 feet during the 30 minute test period, and does not support combustion once the flame source is removed (ref. http://www.frtw.com/sites/default/files/specs/common/class_abc_123.pdf).

5) In the proposed construction, the FRT plywood is behind 2 layers of ⅝ inch type X gypsum wallboard, a layer of 3½ inch mineral fiber insulation, and 7/8 inch stucco. Ignition of the FRT plywood is nearly impossible during a 30 minute NFPA 285 test which produces a heat exposure less severe than the ASTM E119 test. The graph (black line) below depicts the ASTM E119 Curve. This curve is generated using large time delay thermocouples (5 to 7 minute delay). The actual temperatures using a fast response thermocouple (similar to NFPA 285 thermocouples) is higher by a few hundred degrees. During the first 5 minutes, the actual E119 temperatures are closer to 1400° F (Ref. actual experiment conducted by the author March 2015).

The graph below depicts the temperature profile of the exterior fire in the NFPA 285 test (ignore TC1 since it is in direct contact with window plume from room burner).

Clearly, the E119 fire test curve is more severe – especially considering use of fast response thermocouples. In the proposed construction, it is expected that the FRT plywood will not ignite, since it is protected by at least 3 layers of thermally thick non-combustible products. Based on the discussion above, Items 1, 2, 3 & 4 in the proposed construction are therefore covered.

1) 2 layers of ⅝ type X gypsum wallboard 2) FRT wood studs (2x4 or 2x6) 3) FRT plywood (½ or ⅝ or ¾ inch) 4) 2 layers ⅝ type X gypsum wallboard

Point 6 Exterior wall tests which utilize combustible exterior insulation allow use of other insulations which tend to perform the same or better. In the Dow ESR report (Ref. 1), tests were conducted using Dow Thermax polyisocyanurate insulation – a combustible product. In the proposed construction, 3½ inches of mineral fiber insulation is being used. This is a noncombustible product and is clearly an improvement in the wall design. Based on the discussion above, item 6 in the proposed construction is covered.

6) 3½ inch mineral fiber insulation CONCLUSIONS The discussion above shows that the proposed wall design is more conservative than the allowed constructions in the Dow ESR report (Ref. 1), or the allowed constructions in the Priest & Assoc. EEV (Ref. 4). Therefore, the construction depicted below is expected to be able to pass NFPA 285 test criteria.
