ARTISAN BARRELS & TANKS | 2013
Dear Winemaker,
2013 marks our 16th year of proudly and passionately marketing barrels and tanks to the North American wine industry, and we thank all of our customers for your trust and support through the years!
2012 was a successful year for us. We feel we enjoyed the beginning of what we hope is a long-lived and industry, state and nation-wide recovery. And of course, after several years of problematic weather that compromised crops all over North America, we all enjoyed the more normal growing season and crop levels of 2012! We sincerely hope you, our clients, enjoyed success as well, or at the very least the beginning of the turn-around. Barrel and tank sales are arguably a “leading indicator,” since the juice and wine you’re putting in the increased number of tanks and barrels you bought in 2012 will lead to increased production to sell in the next few years once the over-all economy has improved.
So, this year we feel a guarded but welcome sense of optimism we hope will be shared by all. We will continue full speed ahead with our growing group of artisan cooperages and their ne barrels; and we’ll also be fully committed to the increasingly popularity large format fermentation and maturation vessels. You’ll nd in our catalog our usual wide range of barrels and casks from 3 to 10,000 Liters.
News for the 2013 Vintage:
We are thrilled to report the continued success of our French oak range of Artisan Barrels Selection. Both styles of Bordeaux barrel have their fans (and happily often in the same winery): Fire Bent and Steam Bent. The number of orders and trials we were able to arrange for 2012 far exceeded our expecta-tions, and we chalk that up to the loyalty and open-mindedness of you, our fantastic customers. Thank you! Please check out the bolstered reference list in the back of our catalog--you’ll see an even greater range this year of wineries from all over North America using our new barrels. In the coming year, we’ll be visiting with samples from some of our many new trials. Because of the increased popularity of in-barrel red wine ferments, we’re also oering this year a new product: 500L fermentation-ready puncheons. They come with a stainless steel “cupola” lid and oak rack with rollers—so are designed with cap management and must removal in mind.
We also had great continued success with our Artisan Barrels Selection 100% Zemplen Forest Hungarian oak barrels (made by our trusted cooper Balazs Nagy). We will continue with the two styles: Classic which duplicates the toasting and style of the Balazs brand barrels we began with over 8 years ago; and Finesse which we designed to accentuate elegance and nesse, with a tighter grain selection, a minimum of 30 months seasoning, and an extra long and moderate toasting regime. We are poised for continued growth with this excellent cooperage that oers such a ne opportunity for Hungarian oak barrels that for yet another year have held their price steady at $630.
New for Artisan Barrels Selection: Russian oak barrels. We are excited to add this extra dimension to our range of oak sourcing. The barrels will be made from tight grained, 30 month air-dried staves sourced from forests in the Caucasus Mountains. We have contracted with a well-equipped and proven cooperage which, while located in Armenia, is thoroughly French in its philosophy and approach: it is run by a French Master Cooper, and supplies the prestigious Cognac house Martell. The cold climate, high elevation source results in very tight grain wood, which imparts restrained spice and soft tannin that accentuate and focus fruit avors. We look forward to some interesting trials this year!
Rousseau Cooperage remains committed to its successful mix of Tradition Range of single forests and blends and its Expert Range of barrels: Piano, Allegro, Forte and Video. And they are proud to announce that the cooperage is now PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certication) Certied for their exclusive use of sustainably managed oak. Prices will remain stable for the barrels, with small increases in the large tanks and casks. Especially well-received the last couple years have been tanks with the side hatch installed ush with the oor for easier handling of must and for general cleaning; and there is also a “guillotine” type trap door available in the oor of upright tanks. Please note that Rousseau continues to be our only cooper to oer an Early Order Discount of 3% for orders placed by April 1st and delivered by June 15th (March 1st and July 15th for tanks and casks).
We’re very pleased to continue our exclusive representation of the boutique stainless steel tank producer Lejeune from Bordeaux, France. This small, family-run rm has been designing and manufacturing top-end, innovative, elegant, even artistic tanks since 1975. From compartmentalized and variable capacity, to truncated and conical, and now a new reverse-truncated “Expansion” tank, the range and sheer style of these tanks is amazing. You can see some photos and information in this catalog of course; with more on our website and on Lejeune’s (www.cuveslejeune.fr). We are proud to mention that between several key consulting winemakers and upscale wineries that recognized the value and craftsmanship quality of Lejeune tanks, in 2012 we have placed over 30 Lejeune tanks for new wineries such as Brand Napa Valley and Marciano winery; and on the East Coast in Virginia, Stone Tower Vineyards and Cana Wines. Because of high demand and limited supply, winter ordering is recommended to guarantee pre-harvest delivery.
With Nomblot Concrete Tanks we had a record range and number of exciting installations and trials last year; and this year looks to keep that intensity going. Without doubt, Nomblot will be maxed out at production early again this year. So, as always it seems, VERY early ordering is necessary—please let us know if we can get your project started!
We will continue to oer a rened range of top quality stainless steel accessories and tools from Bellot and other suppliers, with a focus on tank accessories such as replacement gaskets and parts. We’re also extremely pleased to now be oering the Lux Barrel Bung, a lovely glass barrel bung that has a silicon sleeve to insure a tight seal in the bung hole. Elegant and classy, these not only look great but unlike traditional “display” glass-only bungs, the Lux Barrel Bung keeps your wine tightly and safely sealed inside the barrel. We’re limited in our distribution with these to California, and the East Coast and Ontario/Quebec; for the Pacic Northwest and elsewhere, please consult www.luxbarrelbungs.com .
A&K Cooperage, under the leadership of Master Cooper Craige Roberts since 2009, grew tremendously with us last year. Alongside their premium line of A&K American Oak BACCUS barrels, their Hybrid 75% French/25% American oak 225L (French oak body/American oak heads), has been extremely well received. It provides an amazingly sophisticated and elegant French oak impact (but with just a touch of extra American oak sweetness and texture) for the bargain price of $550.
Our Oce and Sales Team stays stable for 2013. Marie Bourdillas continues to anchor the oce and handle winery clients, aided by Ann Helen Mønnesland. Jozef Gritters (www.praetori.eu) keeps our graphics compelling; and Gerhard Ziemer starts his sixth season, covering service and sales all over North America. Jerome Aubin is based back on the West coast this year: the Artisan Barrels and Tanks team is intact and ready to go!
Emphasizing service and a dedication to better wine ageing, Artisan Barrels will continue to provide the highest quality oak, concrete and stainless steel tanks, and ne oak barrels created with an “artisanal” philosophy and approach. Since visiting wineries and tasting are essential to assess the impact of oak barrels and tanks on your wines, we look forward to evaluating the 2012 barrels and tanks with you.We wish you all the best for the 2013 vintage!

ARTISAN BARRELS SELECTION | FRENCH OAK BARRELS AND PUNCHEONSThe Artisan Barrels Selection Steam Bent range is made from French oak certied staves by reputable coopers located in the Centre of France and Bordeaux regions. Artisan Barrels has chartered the Charlois Group of Cooperages and Stavemills to source veried French Oak Staves from Single Forests (Jupilles, Troncais, Allier, Vosges) and to build and toast to our specications ne Bordeaux Style Barrels (225L) and Puncheons (265L, 500L). For our Artisan Barrels Selection Fire Bent barrels, we have engaged the resources of Jean Luc Sylvain’s group of stavemills (Traceable French Oak Origin, Jupilles-Troncais-Allier-Vosges staves from sustainably managed forests).
