All the Pretty Little HorsesA Traditional LullabyIllustrated in full color by Linda Saport

◆“The elegantly modulated pastels give an impres-sion of twilight, while elements dusted in white andgold shine luminously, offering comfort.”—KirkusReviews, pointer

“[Saport’s] dreamy pastel illustrations in gorgeouscolor show an African American woman rocking herbaby on the porch in the rural South long ago, whilehorses leap across the sky in the moonlight. . . . Withthe music on the back page, this is sure to become afavorite version of a beautiful song, just right for themood between waking and sleeping—even for thevery youngest child.”—ALA Booklist

“This classic lullaby . . . is carefully illustrated with one double-page spread for each line. The pictures are rendered in pastels andare dominated by rich hues of the blues, purples, and yellowsfound in evening skies. . . . The colors reinforce both the emo-tional concern of the African-American mother and the whimsical elements found in the lullaby. Transitions between thereality of parent with child and the fantasy of the infant’s dreamsare seamless.”—School Library Journal

Our Teacher’s Having a Babyby Eve Bunting

Illustrated in full color by Diane de Groat

“Mrs. Neal informs her students that she’s going to havea baby. They take the news well but have lots of ques-tions, all of which are legitimate. And Mrs. Neal provesto be a responsible teacher answering their questions andinvolving the children in her situation. . . . Bunting’sstory is realistic and accurate, while de Groat’s beautifulwatercolor spreads show much of the emotion thatseven-year-olds can feel, from the excitement at hearingthe news to the fear of not seeing their teacher again.Overall, this book provides great feelings of reassurance, which children need during times of change.”—ALABooklist

“A warm—but unsentimental—story about the excite-ment, anticipation, and anxieties experienced by a first-grade class whose teacher has a baby during the schoolyear. The children’s questions and comments, theteacher’s good-humored responses, and the way thisevent becomes a focus for activities make not only a

good story but an excellent set of lesson plans for pregnant teachers! The watercolor illustrations perfectly capture the postures, moods, and expressions of the children and the livelinessof their classroom.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Bunting’s wise and wonderful tale deserves its place on everyschool and library public shelf. De Groat’s warm watercolor illustrations portray a nurturing and joy-filled classroom. She successfully reflects all the emotions of the action from excitedanticipation to complete joy to worried concern. An excellent collaboration.”—School Library Journal

Sunshine Home by Eve Bunting

Illustrated in full color by Diane de Groat

“A rare and perceptive book on an increasingly impor-tant topic. Nursing homes are a troubling necessity inour busy world, and Bunting tells of one family’s transi-tion with dignity, honesty, sensitivity, and just enoughhumor to make it bearable. . . . Bunting once again tackles the tough—and triumphs. de Groat’s realisticwatercolor illustrations are appropriately heavy on insti-tutional green and poignantly support the text. A mustfor children’s collections that should also be stronglyconsidered for libraries serving nursing homes.”—SchoolLibrary Journal

“In perceptive, realistic watercolors, de Groat character-izes Timmie’s family with loving care and depicts the res-idents of the home in enough realistic variety to giveyoung readers a good idea of what to expect on such avisit. A poignant slice of life . . . Timmie’s successfulintervention sends the message that even a child canoffer real consolation.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Youngsters whose families are wrestling with similar concernsover an elderly or unwell grandparent will especially relate to thedilemma conveyed here with honesty and some sadness but witha prevailing hopefulness.”—ALA Booklist

The Wave of the Sea-WolfWritten and illustrated in full color by David Wisniewski

“Wisniewski’s original story is based on a Tlingit legend, and his art, too, combines the original andthe traditional. The illustrations are elaborate cut-paperwork, and their intricacy . . . contributes to animpressive 3-dimenstional effect. Ethnic representa-tion of the characters is convincing, but mostremarkable of all is the use of native Northwestdesign motifs. Not only the expected objects—canoes, paddles, boxes, and garments—are adornedwith adapted but authentic-looking decoration, but also the text on each page is surmounted with a border of varying design. A lengthy endnote discusses the history and legend—and the contem-porary message—behind Wisniewski’s entertainingand instructive creation.”—School Library Journal

“Vivid storytelling is complemented by textured cut-paper illustrations that paint the forest landscape inlacy layers. Their intricacy captures the strength anddangerous beauty of the ocean, while slender silhouettes of trees against the moon are calmly awe-inspiring. Wisniewski’s ability to convey both

high drama and simple emotion lends a sense of authenticity to this original tale. A wise and appealing picture book.”—Publishers Weekly

“Exciting elements of killer waves and threatening aliens makethis an enticing choice for independent readers, as well as a natural tie-in for school geography and earth science units.”—Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

Owen Foote, Super Spyby Stephanie Greene

Illustrated by Martha Weston

“Back for a fifth adventure, Owen and his friends take up under-cover work. Outfitted with camouflage headgear (made fromDad’s boxer shorts) and walkie-talkies, the boys embark on a daring exploit, spying on their elementary-school principal. . . .Greene is at her best describing Owen and his hilarious preoccu-pations, and she has a keen ear for middle-grade dialogue. . . . A solid addition to the easy-chapter-book genre, this will be popular with Owen’s fans and newcomers to the series.”—ALABooklist

“This latest volume in the Owen Foote series will entertain youngreaders with its humor and creativity. Simple line illustrations of the camouflage disguise, the eye-blinking code, and an exciting chase scene add to the hilarity of Owen’s adventures. A lighthearted spirit and smart dialogue will keep young readerschanting for more of this funny fellow, even if they do end upwearing underwear on their heads.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Youngsters will love this book for the sheer fun and intrigue.Boys, especially, will appreciate the stuff they consider importantand unimportant, like an annoying older sister. Chapters are fluidand just the right length, with well-developed characters, hushedmoments, and cliff-hanger endings. The black-and-white illustrations are few, but always in the right spot. The detail isexceptional and the facial expressions, priceless. Enjoyable independently, this title is also an amusing read-aloud.”—SchoolLibrary Journal

Queen Sophie Hartleyby Stephanie Greene

It’s not easy being a nine-year-old kid in the middle of a busy, gifted family. Especially when the list of things you’re good atincludes only two items—“Crying” and “Stopping crying”—and the list of things you’re not good at seems to be gettinglonger every day.

When Sophie’s mom suggests that she’s good at being kindand just needs a little more practice, Sophie feels hopeful. Butbeing kind to a grouchy old lady or her big sister, Nora, or theweird new girl at school isn’t as easy as it sounds. If only Sophiewere a queen, she could practice being kind to commonersinstead. It would be much more dignified and elegant. And shewould finally get to wear her very own diamond tiara. . . .

From the author of the popular Owen Foote books, here is afunny, observant novel about an irrepressible girl, as quirky andoriginal in her own way as Owen is in his, in search of her ownspecial talent.

Stephanie Greene is the author of six books about Owen Foote,as well as Falling into Place and Show and Tell. She lives with herfamily in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Sketches from a Spy TreePoems by Tracie Vaughn Zimmer

Illustrated in full color by Andrew Glass

Perched in the branches of her favorite tree with her sketchbook, Anne-Marie watches the world go by. While recording her observations ofneighbors, friends, and family, she thinks about her father, who left twoyears before; about Mike, who seems to be trying to take his place;about her twin sister, Mary Anne, who looks like her (at least to adults)but sees things very differently. Poems in Anne-Marie’s voice, sometimeshumorous, sometimes poignant, and always honest, take readersthrough a year of change in the life of a family and in Anne-Marie’sheart. Illustrations that include paintings, drawings, and collage capturethe text’s emotional range and Anne-Marie’s own artistic vision.

A Bear Named Troubleby Marion Dane Bauer

Ten-year-old Jonathan practically lives at the Anchorage Zoo,where his father is a keeper. He loves animals, and even imagineshimself inside their bodies, seeing what they see, feeling what theyfeel.

Meanwhile, a young brown bear is wandering through thewoods near Anchorage, alone and hungry. One night, whilesearching for food, the bear crosses paths with Jonathan, whoeagerly follows him onto the zoo grounds.

But when the bear accidentally kills Mama Goose, Jonathan’sfavorite zoo creature, the boy loses the empathy he had felt earli-er. He wishes that the bear—now nicknamed Trouble—wouldmeet the same fate as his beloved goose, and he impulsively takessteps to make sure that happens.

Based on an actual incident, and told in alternating chaptersfrom the bear’s and Jonathan’s points of view, this is both aninvolving animal story and a thought-provoking investigationinto the consequences of one’s actions.

Project Mulberryby Linda Sue Park

Julia Song and her friend Patrick would love to win a blue ribbon, maybe even two, at the state fair. They’ve always done projectstogether, and they work well as a team. This time, though, they’rehaving trouble coming up with just the right plan. Then Julia’smother offers a suggestion: They can raise silkworms, as she didwhen she was a girl in Korea.

Patrick thinks it’s a great idea. Of course there are obstacles—for example, where will they get mulberry leaves, the only thingsilkworms eat?—but nothing they can’t handle.

Julia isn’t so sure. The club where kids do their projects is allabout traditional American stuff, and raising silkworms just doesn’t fit in. Moreover, the author, Ms. Park, seems determinedto make Julia’s life as complicated as possible, no matter how hardJulia tries to talk her out of it.

In her first novel with a contemporary setting, Linda Sue Parkdelivers a funny, lively story that illuminates both the process ofwriting a novel and the meaning of growing up American.

Linda Sue Park is the author of thenovels A Single Shard, which receivedthe Newbery Medal, Seesaw Girl, TheKite Fighters, and When My Name WasKeoko, as well as two picture books forClarion, The Firekeeper’s Son and WhatDoes Bunny See? She lives with her family in Rochester, New York.

Gus never imagined himself a parent at thirteen. But in the war-fraught summer of 1942, while living on his grandparents’Vermont farm, he adopts a clutch of orphaned duck eggs. Gus canrelate to the foundlings, as he is apart from, and yearns for, hisown family.

One day Gus finds a young stranger standing over the incubating eggs. Gus doesn’t know what to make of her, with hertattered clothing and strange accent, but soon the girl is helpingto care for the newly hatched ducklings, and she and Gus becomefast friends. Not everyone shares Gus’s high opinion of Louise, whose poverty-stricken French-Canadian family is shunned bythe townspeople. His attempt to help his friend and her familyhas some embarrassing consequences and he must make retribu-tion if he is to keep Louise’s friendship.

Nancy Price Graff ’s fluid narrative and exceptional eye fordetail follow Gus during a time of food rationing, Victory gardens, watching for enemy planes—and keeping his ducks from harm.

Nancy Price Graff lives in Montpelier, Vermont, with her husband, whose grandparents’ home served as the setting for this novel.

Good Brother, Bad BrotherThe Story of Edwin Booth & John Wilkes Boothby James Cross Giblin

Illustrated with black-and-white archival photographs

Edwin Booth and his younger brother John Wilkes Booth were,in many ways, two of a kind. They were among America’s finestactors, having inherited their father’s commanding stage presence along with his penchant for alcohol and impulsivebehavior.
