Taking its name from Julian Avenue in Acton the Society has kept the Gilbert &Sullivan operas alive in Ealing since 1948. How About Joining Us

The Julian operates as a charity for the education of those interested in all aspects ofstagecraft, music and singing. All voice ranges are required and previous experienceis not necessary – good opportunities exist for rehearsal and learning. The society alsovalues a good social side to bring fun and relaxation that participation brings.

Rehearsals take place weekly throughout the year (except August) at Ealing TownHall on Wednesday evenings. During the winter months, the Society rehearses for aspring concert/soiree. From March to October/November rehearsals are devoted tothe main autumn production.

How nice to be in Venice and sunny Spain!! I have always considered The Gondoliers tobe most enjoyable of the G & S operas. It is a jolly good “musical”, it hasromance, comedy and some brilliant lively songs and although thestory line is thin – basically which of two gondoliers is really a king - itis good enough to keep one guessing until the end.

The popularity of Gilbert & Sullivan operas lies in the fact that the bestof them stand the test of time. The settings can be adapted withoutcompromising the basic concept and I think you will enjoy thisproduction brought forward to the 1950’s.

The Gondoliers requires a bigger cast than most of the other G & S operas and wewelcome Marston York (Guiseppe) and William Branston (Luiz) in their first showwith us. Kat Beaty (Gianetta) and Helen Dawson (Casilda) joined us for our lastproduction, Ruddigore, and now take two of the leading female roles. Fraser Grantdirects - his fifteenth show with us - with Paul Smith again as musical director. Theorchestra form a key part to any production and we are indebted to the musicianswho make up the band – mainly young people where the experience gained in playingin a theatrical environment is invaluable.

liers go to Barataria to determine who is King. Their wives and fellow Contadinefollow them. Don Alhambra who is involved in the mix up, helps to sort it out in hisown inimitable way.

castMike Smartt - The Duke of Plaza-ToroThe inexorable rise up the social scale of Mike Smartt continues.Two years ago, a humble Private in the Brigade of Guards inIolanthe, last year a mere Baron in Ruddigore and now, no lesser apersonage than a Duke - and a Spanish one to boot – as a visitor toVenice in The Gondoliers. Though his accent is rather less thanaristocratic – more Eric Pickles than the Prince of Wales.

William Branston - LuizWilliam is a music graduate from Royal Holloway, University ofLondon. He has studied voice extensively and regularly performswith local dramatic societies, choirs and also competes in nationalvocal competitions. Recent performances include Box in Cox andBox with the Grimm Players and Don Jose in Carmen with MOS.He is currently rehearsing Mozart’s The Magic Flute in which he isplaying the role of Tamino with MOS. This is William’s first pro-duction with JLOS, and he has thoroughly enjoyed it.

Marston York - Giuseppe PalmieriMarston trained at the Drama Studio London back when we hadsummers, so has had plenty of time to forget everything he learned.From stage to screen to microphone, he has been excessively verbalfor most of his professional life - and his personal one according toClaudia - so an opportunity to be verbal with G&S is a deliciouspleasure, for which many thanks to the JLOS. Cachucha-cha-cha!

In 1972 , a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a militarycourt for a crime they didn’t commit. These men promptly es-caped from a maximum-security stockade to the Los Angeles un-derground. Today, still wanted by the government, they surviveas soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem...if no one else canhelp...and if you can find them...maybe you can hire...The A-Team.

Russell is delighted to appear with JLOS once again in The Gondo-liers, having played Strephon in Iolanthe two years ago. A sea-soned Questors Theatre acting company member, his musical truelove is Stephen Sondheim and he has featured in productions ofSweeney Todd (Pirelli) and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way tothe Forum (Hysterium).

This is Sunita’s seventh show with the Julian. Previous rolesinclude Pitty Sing in The Mikado, Constance in The Sorcerer, Phoebein The Yeomen of the Guard and last year she played the role ofMad Margaret in Ruddigore. This year she is pleased to be playingTessa who thankfully is not as mad and get’s her man in the end! You may also have seen Sunita in past Questors’ productions;previous roles include Emma Bovary in Breakfast with Emma, Celiain As You Like It, Adriana in The Comedy of Errors and The GoodAngel in Faustus.

After making her society debut as the Lady Ghost in last yearsRuddigore, Kat has abandoned the screaming and cackling infavour of some actual singing this year. A drama graduate fromExeter University, she has previously played Mabel in The Piratesof Penzance and Yum Yum in The Mikado. Kat has thoroughlyenjoyed preparing for The Gondoliers, and despite recent claimsthat ‘her charms are overrated’, is very excited to be returning toThe Questors.

Helen specialised in singing at Royal Holloway University ofLondon and was an active member of their Savoy Opera Society.With them, she played the eponymous roles in Patience and TheMerry Widow, and has participated in the chorus of The Pirates ofPenzance, The Mikado and Iolanthe. Other parts include Joannain Sweeny Todd and Elizabeth in Robert & Elizabeth. This isHelen’s second show with JLOS, singing Zorah in last year’sRuddigore. Helen has recently joined the BBC Symphony Chorus.

Maureen Fitzpatrick-Browne - InezMaureen has been a member of the Julian since 1966 and , in previ-ous productions , has played the more glamorous roles of Tessa andVittoria. This time she is the old dear who comes on at the end toreveal the true identity of the heir to the throne, a small but veryimportant part. Maureen is a Trustee for the Julian’s chosen Char-ity ‘ P.E.S.T.S.’ and she thanks the Society for their continued sup-port.

This is Eleanor’s sixth production with the Julian. Her previousprincipal role was Cousin Hebe in HMS Pinafore (2008). She has alsosung in two G & S productions with the Grosvenor Light OperaCompany. Eleanor also sings with the Sky Choir. She studies withZena Wigram.

Alan joined JLOS in 1993 and has been in most of their shows sincethen. His stage “career” started way back in the era of Church affili-ated societies when he joined Holy Cross Operatic and Dramatic Soci-ety in Greenford, a forerunner of GLOC Musical Theatre. Previousroles with JLOS include Pish - Tush in The Mikado and Poseidon inOrpheus in The Underworld.

Victoria’s first encounter with G&S was her grandfather’s renditionof ‘Take A Pair Of Sparkling Eyes’, when she was very tiny indeed, soshe’s delighted to be performing in The Gondoliers. She has an endur-ing love affair with rock’n’roll fashion, music and dance, so couldn’tpass up the opportunity to costume the show, especially as it meansthat she gets to wear pretty dresses!

This is Colm’s fourth show since joining the Julian. His previouschorus roles have included Yeoman, Peer, and even a ghostlyBaronet Dorian Gray, all of which have been tremendous fun andexperience. This year “Io sono Gondolier” which as one of manyGondoliers he will try to find the hand of one pretty maid... well onemust try.

This is the fourth time Cheryl has done The Gondoliers so she knowsthe music by now! She joined the Julian in 1983 to sing the title rolein Princess Ida, and has enjoyed every show since. Cheryl teachespart time, and is also involved with her church choir.

Fraser Grant studied French at Edinburgh University, and thenwent on to train as a Director at Drama Studio, London.
