Edition 12

October 2012, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21

Bordeaux, Artigues-près-Bordeaux, Lormont / France

Les grandes Traversées is an unconventional festival opened to all public to discover new artistic ways and issues where creations placing the question and the meaning of art in the centre of its action.

Les grandes Traversées explores the mutations of creation in the field of contemporary arts around two main ideas: audacity and cultural crossing, without putting a hierarchy between the disciplines, and that, outside the expected circuits.

Definitely "unfashionable" because it always comes ahead, Les grandes Traversées are an immersion in unexpected artistic forms and spaces. Les grandes Traversées are an instan-taneous on the actuality of Artists of our time and of our planet.

For this edition 2012, Les grandes Traversées present MATANICOLA’S MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR in tree towns in South West of France, in the region of Aquitaine: Bordeaux, Artigues and Lormont. The collective matanicola, Matan Zamir (Tel Aviv - Berlin) and Nicola Mascia (Turin - Berlin), invites for a «carte blanche » thirty artists from the International contemporary art scene (choreographers, performers, artists, musicians) for a sensitive, sensual, organic and mutant edition...

-Bordeaux – District « Bassin à Flots »

This edition presents itself as a laboratory of all possibles. It is part of the perspective of research, discoveries and artistic questions explored by The grandes Traversées since 10 years.

It is a fact that different feedback from the public, media and artists themselves, show that the artistic appointments of the festival have provoked new aesthetic perspectives and opened different artistic domains of research that are perhaps even unique.

In this logic, all perspectives will be reviewed. Those relating to the artistic object itself, the relation to technical, and the relation and confrontation to the public.

This perspective will take place in Bordeaux in the district called « les Bassins à Flots » in a Submarine Base. This area is chosen for its singularity, its power and symbol in a city in transformation. For us it is the district of modernity, in its ability to move and stimulate the artists we invite.

-LORMONT

The entrant of a new partner FRADIN-SA in the history of Les grandes Traversées, offers us the opportunity to work in the township of Lormont and especially in the « Château du Prince Noir ». This new place is very important for us, because of its particularity, its history and its location. It created the "Pont des Arts", the junction between the two riversides of the Garonne.

-ARTIGUES-PRES-BORDEAUX

For this new edition, it seems logical to collaborate again with the Centre of choreographic development of Aquitaine / Le Cuvier de Feydeau. Indeed, Le Cuvier is an historical partner since the beginning of the gT. It is for us, an important and necessary partner that contributes, like we do, to promote young contemporary artists.

ISRAEL / ITALY

In relation with the nationality of the two artists associated with this edition Matan Zamir (Tel Aviv) and Ni-cola Mascia (Turin) both living in Berlin, it will be turned towards Italy, Israel and Berlin. This collaboration is a real « carte blanche » given to the artists because we are convinced that only artists have true talent to write art project.

The artistic propositions will be declined under several perspectives:

The welcoming in Bordeaux of performances directed by the invited artists, most often for the first time in France

The research perspective around new areas of contemporary arts, by renewing and redefining the rela-tionship between creation and public, technical and scenography, will undoubtedly create new horizons for tomorrow’s Contemporary creation and unique moments only seen in Bordeaux.

The collaborative duo matanicola.

After working with prestigious international companies, directors and choreographers such as Sasha Waltz & Guests, Batsheva Dance Company, Benoit Lachambre, Ohad Naharin, Emio Greco/PC, Yasmeen Godder, Itzik Weingerten and Inbal Pinto amongst others, Berlin based Israeli choreographer and performer Matan Zamir and Italian Nicola Mascia founded the collaborative duo matanicola. Their first production »under« (Kurt Jooss Prize 2007), created in collaboration with Israeli choreographer Yasmeen Godder, premiered in Berlin in 2005 and has since been touring extensively throughout Europe and Israel. In 2006 matanicola debuted their on going improvisation series »versus« which, so far, has been presented in several European festivals and cities.

Their second production »Ladies first«, co-produced and presented by Grand Theatre Groningen, Tanz im August and Civitanova Danza, premiered in Groningen in 2007. At the beginning of 2009, matanicola was invited by Jeremy Wade, Meg Stuart and Brendan Dougherty, curators of the festival Politics of Ecstasy, to join a pool of choreographers and performers in a series of exploratory dance improvisations at the Hebbel Am Ufer in Berlin. The following year, they premiered in Tel Aviv »What on Earth«, their third production and first to be entirely created in Israel. During the same year, matanicola has been chosen as one of the 2010 artists in residence at La Caldera in Barcelona. This signed the beginning of the creative process of their latest work »Piece of me «, co‐produced by Grand Theatre Groningen and premiered in Berlin in 2011.

Also in 2011, matanicola was invited by Anna Wagner, curator of the Festival Leaving the comfort zone, in the frame of the Asia Pacific Weeks, at the Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin, to participate in »Matchpoint«, a week long exchange program and exploratory laboratory, with a selection of independent choreographers and performers from Europe and the Asia—Pacific region. As duo, they have been also collaborating, as choreographers and performers, in music videos and live shows with artists such as Peaches, Hanayo and Mignon amongst others. Besides choreography and performance, matanicola regularly teach classes and their intensive movement research workshop »the “unlearning” process« internationally.

« You are a Saint » , Yochai Matos ( Tel Aviv ) www.yochaimatos.com

An installation for one person, an uncommon self-portrait

Yochai Matos (born 1977) lives and works in Tel Aviv. He Graduated in 2004 from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem. His work deals with public space as property, taking place both on the streets and inside the established Art world and searching for the cross points between the two disciplines.

In his works Matos uses basic and simple images derived from Modern Culture - images which already contain layers of replication and recycling. The images' evolution leads both to depletion and to over-readability. By dealing with pop and kitsch icons (such as sunsets; flames of fire; a heart; a couple of dolphins jumping over the water) Matos wishes to touch upon romantic, authentic and lost emotions, sug-gesting a simple and comforting way of confronting the contemporary disease of emotional disability.

Yochai Matos Works a lot with the hypnotic WOW effect of the flickering fluorescent lights. His work is exhibited around the world, but for the first time in France in the next edition.

European Premiere: February 2010, Theatre de la Place, Liege, Belgium

Co-Production: Curtain Up Festival 2009, Tel Aviv, Israel, Théâtre de la Place, Liege, Belgium, Hebbel am Ufer, Berlin, Germany

The first part of the creation was commissioned by Les Subsistances , Laboratories de création artis-tique ,Lyon, France and Kunstfest Weimar GmbH, Weimar, Germany.

Yasmeen Godder's "Love Fire", is performed completely to the soundtrack of well- known classical waltz pieces, ranging from Shostakovich to Strauss. Using her very personal and unique performance language, she responds to the waltzes through a private prism of ideas, with the desire to be moved and charged by it, without judgment. Taking into consideration the cultural and personal distance from this music, a complex and humorous journey evolves on stage dealing with different understandings of what is « romantic ». The desire to fall in love, to lose control, to be transformed and taken by passion are explored through bold physicality and bizarre imagery, which give a new twist to stereotypes of male and female identity, and the roles they play within a relationship. At the end the visual artist Yochai Matos, known in Tel-Aviv for his street and gallery works, creates a performative response, perhaps even an intervention, which adds a surprising twist turning the choreography into a large installation on stage.

- MATANICOLA'S MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR

CONCEPT : MATANICOLA

CREATION

Since the beginning in 2006, "versus" enable matanicola to create and interpret specific works in many sites in several European cities, as an old factory in Berlin, underground clubs, a medieval Italian park, a 15th century villa, the Auctions of Royan and Bordeaux City Hall, to name a few ... The most recent performance "versus" took place on the roof of the Submarine Base in Bordeaux, during the last edition of Les grandes Traversées and after that experience matanicola felt the need to continue to explore this fascinating area of the Bassin a Flots and create an event on a larger scale questioning all the site.

Using the opportunity of their « carte blanche » in the next edition of Les grandes Traversées, they want to develop the concept of INTERVENTION # 2/Bordeaux. After INTERVENTION # 1 / MILANO, an improvisation structured from ideas suggested and developed by matanicola and the group of participants in a recent intensive workshop in Milan, the concept of INTERVENTION # 2 / BORDEAUX is to invade and occupy during an all day the industrial area of Bordeaux The Bassin à Flots.

After selecting various locations under construction or destruction, matanicola offers to the artists the opportunity to create together an unique piece of art that will take place at The Base Submarine. Matanicola will be involved in every part of the interventions. Public and participants will entirely be part of the dispositive and will have the chance to live this day like "Alice in Wonderland", a voyage in industrial areas, abandoned landscapes, and plots of land under renovation.

This site specific and ephemeral project of art work, may seem strange but it is through each creation that this area of Bordeaux in mutation will achieve a new life were the inhabitants in a collective impulse will take part of the transformation.

This truly event will be documented to keep memories of the neighbourhood as it is now before its reconstruction and evolution.

INTERVENTION is a structured improvisation around and about sketches of ideas suggested and developed by matanicola with the group of participants of a recent intensive workshop they lead in Milan, hosted by Fattoria Vittadini.

INTERVENTION is an extension of the research process around improvisation named "versus" developed by matanicola. Transforming and expanding their questioning about the relation-ship between one or several dancers, this research series of studies is based on the notion of improvisation as a tool for creating, a framework to test new artistic meetings and that in new places and cities. A kind of spontaneous encounter in a very flexible format, without rule or long repetition periods. The instantaneous composition is created and performed in front of an audience. Exposing here the fragility and the usual risk taken in all creative process.

POINTS OF VIEW …

Les grandes Traversées offers a new perspective on emerging creation in Aquitaine. Each year the program offers to the public the chance to discover young artists from multidisciplinary disciplines.

For this first « point of view », we felt it important to take a critical look at the young artistic community of Aquitaine, through the eyes of Les grandes Traversées and the county agency IDDAC.

Invited artists :

It takes time to reach the quality of listening and proposals with A.Percheron’s writing. The tree lives only from its extensions and for a vegetal, it is always easier to "swarm" elsewhere than to imagine shoots unpublished. This project directed by François Poujardieu from the Company PROLOGUE puts the originality and sensitivity of its testimony at the crossroads of different artistic approaches Choreography, Video Creation, Visual Art, Music, Theatre, The Electroacoustic elements promoting ... 6 elements that favour perception of a degenerative process that, artistically talking, has the strength of a renaissance...

DANCE

JASON HODSON

Since he was 17, Jason Hodson has discovered a strong passion for dance, his investment has never stopped growing, first by the practice of amateur Hip Hop dance, then force determination, discoveries and encounters, he integrated Co. Stylistik. He quickly wishes to professionalize in dance and it’s how he left Lyon to integrate a Professional training Cie Rêvolution in Bordeaux where he was trained in dance academic and where he developed a strong attraction for contemporary dance. His training was completed in June and he is now eager to create, search, and discover new artistic worlds.
