NEW DRAMA CATEGORY FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS AT 8TH SCHOOLS VIDEO AWARDS

1. The Ministry of Education and Ngee Ann Polytechnic (School of Film and Media Studies) hosted the Eighth Schools Video Awards (SVA) Ceremony on 2 March 2007 to honour the effort of 171 schools in their video production ventures. This event is supported by the Media Development Authority. A total of 68 awards (8 Platinum, 11 Gold, 18 Silver and 31 Merit) were presented to students at the ceremony. A total of 3 awards (1 Platinum, 1 Silver and 1 Merit) were given out for the Teachers’ Competition. 2. This year, the drama category was introduced to the Primary schools. The aim is to encourage them to put forward their creative stories into video. 3. The Guest-of-Honour for this event was Ms Tan Pin Pin, a local award-winning film maker. 4. More details on the SVA are given in Annex A. The names of the award winners are given in Annex B. 5. At the ceremony, winning teams received prizes in the form of trophies, product vouchers, and gifts sponsored by Sony Singapore, Pinnacle Systems, Hardwarezone (Singapore) Pte Ltd, Digital Animation Asia Pte Ltd, Verbatim Marketing (Singapore) Pte Ltd, Animagine Pte Ltd, MobileOne Ltd, Public Utilities Board, Lee Foundation and Peripheral Solutions (S) Pte Ltd. All participating schools received plaques while all participants received certificates of participation. Background 6. The SVA was first inaugurated in June 1999. It was started with the aim of providing a platform for our students to express themselves creatively through the use of video. The SVA also provides opportunities for teamwork, collaboration and development of media literacy. The SVA has since enhanced students’ understanding of the use and workings of the video medium to create a story for the intended audience, including an appreciation for the need to respect the copyright ownership of works by other producers. 7. The competition was introduced to teachers in March 2005. The Teachers' Competition aims to be a platform through which teachers can express their creativity and

INFORMATION SHEET

8TH SCHOOLS VIDEO AWARDS CEREMONY 2007 1. The Schools Video Awards (SVA) is organised for all primary, secondary, pre-university students and teachers.

Students’ Competition 2. For the Students’ competition, participants work in teams of up to six students, with a teacher-facilitator, to produce the videos. Each school may send up to 2 entries. A total number of 270 entries from 79 primary schools, 80 secondary schools and 12 junior colleges were submitted for the SVA competition this year. 3. The SVA comprises 5 categories:

a. Documentary (Primary) is for primary school pupils who have to submit a 5-minute documentary on any topic with educational content and/or values.

b. Documentary (Secondary and JC/CI) is for secondary school and pre-

university students who have to submit a 5-minute documentary on any topic with educational content and/or values.

c. Drama (Primary) is for primary school pupils who have to submit a 10-minute

drama on any topic of their choice. d. Drama (Secondary and JC/CI) is for secondary and pre-university students

who have to submit a 10-minute drama on any topic of their choice. e. Advertisements (Primary) is for primary pupils who have to submit a 1-

minute advertisement based on a hobby/value. f. Advertisements (Secondary and JC/CI) is for secondary and pre-university

students who have to submit a 1-minute advertisement based on a hobby/value.

Teachers’ Competition

4. For the Teachers’ competition, participants are to submit a video that can lend itself to classroom teaching, either as a trigger activity, main activity or closure of a lesson. It should also be interesting to the target audience and be sufficiently challenging to encourage learning. These videos can be on the following:

a. demonstration of procedure;

b. presentation of information e.g. interviews;

c. clarification of concept e.g. through visualisation;

d. dramatisation of values and attitudes; and any other possibilities.

5. A total number of 24 entries from teachers were submitted for the Teachers’ competition.

Cancer is a detrimental illness especially for the young. Inevitably, cancer patients lose their hair during treatment, leading to loss of confidence. Hair for Hope is an annual event held by the Children Cancer Foundation since 2003 in support for children diagnosed with cancer. Dinesh Raju, a 13-year old who was previously diagnosed with cancer, was interviewed. With strong support from his family and friends, he battled cancer with hope to fulfil his dream.
