ALS

Despite the sometimes delicate financial situation of our companies and a recovery which seems to be slow in coming, as shown in the Sector statistics published this autumn, the enthusiasm of all the professionals for this fourth edition of Paysalia is a strong and encouraging signal. As COP21 starts, this enthusiasm is very logical as no-one can deny the importance of landscaping in solving challenges to the environment and problems of public health.

What distinguishes the Union Nationale des Entreprises du Paysage is its fundamentals - listening, friendliness and closeness to landscaping companies. By co-producing the landscaping, gardening and sports ground benchmark show, our professional association is happy to contribute motivating and strengthening the sector. A privileged moment for meetings, experience and knowledge sharing, conferences and debates to get information, swap and progress, Paysalia is also a convivial moment when sector professionals can meet each other.

Innovation and professionalism also hallmark the Union Nationale des Entreprises du Paysage (National Landscaping Companies Federation). Technical, environmental and societal innovations are indisputably key factors in standing out from the crowd in a changing world.

The rise in the number of exhibitors is a good indicator - very positive and encouraging for the sector. It clearly demonstrates that suppliers have a host of technical innovations they want to bring to the attention of the sector to help them develop their markets and thus contribute to overcoming morose economic conditions.

Innovation is also a principle our professional association adopts itself. One example is our new modern and dynamic graphic charter. Paysalia, the “must” event for all landscapers and affording unique visibility, is the obvious place for the Union Nationale des Entreprises du Paysage to finalize the launch of its new universe. Come to our stand to discover or rediscover our missions and the services we provide to our members!

P. 4PRESS KIT 2015PAYSALIA 3 questions to…

Following the success of the three preceding editions, Paysalia has today become the “must” meeting place for sector professionals. How did Paysalia become a “must” event?

Paysalia is first and foremost a general show proposing a full range of all the equipment and services landscaping professionals need.It is also a show for landscapers with whom we have privileged relationships. As you know, the co-producer of the event is Unep, the French Landscaping Companies Federation. Paysalia is a big community and attracts visitors from public authorities, landscape architects, buyers from wholesalers and retailers as well as private athorities like property developers, hotels and campsites. The rapid growth of Paysalia is certainly due to the fact that we developed the show with support and advice from the organizations representing the landscaping, gardening and sport ground sectors: Hortis, AITF, CNVVF for Public Authorities, FFP for landscape gardeners, FEDAIRSPORT for sports ground professionals, EILO for Interior landscape designers, FNPHP representing nursery exhibitors and SYNAA representing watering companies. The success of the exhibition is due to this joint effort by all our sponsors.

What will be the special features of this edition?

The biggest event at the exhibition is, of course, the third edition of the «Carré des Jardiniers» contest. For the 3rd year in this prestigious contest, 5 candidates compete “live” at the exhibition to win the title of 2015 Master Gardener. This event is a “must” for the top names in landscape gardening as it reveals the unique know-how and human values of the profession through the beautiful gardens executed on the spot.Another aspect of Paysalia reflecting the diversity of its contents is “The Public Authority Days” which, through technical visits and conferences, are a forum for discussions on the problems of creating green spaces in urban areas and public park maintenance. The sport ground market has grown strongly in recent years, which is why Paysalia now features a dedicated Wellgreen Day for stadium, sport grounds and golf course managers.Conferences and events like the plants recognition contest for schools, the EILO Congress and also Innovation Spaces and the Paysalia Trophies will be key moments at Paysalia. All visitors and exhibitors want news and convivial events. They can enjoy lunch at the Bistrot des Jardiniers in unique surroundings, virtually in the heart of the «Carré des Jardiniers».

Other key moments include the Gala Night on December 1st, 2015 where exhibitors and visitors can relax together and the Paysalia evening on December 2nd, 2015 at which the «Carré des Jardiniers» winner is announced.

The «Carré des Jardiniers» theme is “Recreation”. Why?

«Carré des Jardiniers» jury foreman Jean Mus chose this theme. I think his idea was to give the contestants a chance to take time out from this somewhat complicated context and let them give full rein to the boys and girls we all have inside us to enjoy a playground.Jean Mus emphasizes the importance of all five senses.Apparently, the first candidates are inspired by the concept and find “recreation” a free, open-ended and amusing topic!

PAYSALIA3 questions to…

3 questions to…

3 questions to Catherine Muller

Unep and Paysalia President.

Paysalia co-producer Unep is an active federation, bringing together everyone involved in the landscaping sector. What does Unep do for professionals?

In 1963, Unep became the only organization for landscaping professionals recognized by French public authorities. Within Unep, landscaping entrepreneurs share experiences, drive, organize and defend the profession and also reflect on the actions to undertake to promote and develop their activities and trades.

Unep represents landscaping companies in dealings with Ministries, the MSA, trades unions and organizations like Agrica. It negotiates collective bargaining and employer/employee agreements. It also provides vocational assistance and training, working closely with Fafsea and Vivea.Other Unep missions include promoting and developing the landscaping market. Finally and especially, Unep runs regular meetings between local landscapers to share convivial moments and encourage their commitment to the profession’s future.

What trends and changes can you see in this market and how is the sector doing?

But the overall market is changing. Landscaping companies are evolving to meet emerging trends towards biodiversity, eco-pastoralism, ecological engineering and green walls and roofs “greening” urban centres. Landscapers are adapting their skills to meet the needs of these new markets.

Is Paysalia an important promotional vector for the sector?

As co-producer of Paysalia, Unep has been very involved with the show from the start, 3 editions ago. It is now a “must”, federating the whole landscaping and gardening sector. The aim is to ensure the exhibition promotes the sector and the trades, which Unep represents. During the 3-day event, exhibitors and visitors from all over France meet to forge durable professional contacts and share experiences. We are delighted to see that more exhibitors and more visitors attend each time! Paysalia really has become THE show uniting all the different activities and know-how of landscape companies in tune with Unep values and convictions: Innovation, federation and development.Besides giving the sector high visibility, Paysalia encourages specialist get-togethers at specific events (Public Authority Days, Wellgreen, conferences led by experts, the Paysalia Gala evening, The European Indoor Landscaping Prize, etc.).

Unep’s objective with Paysalia is to reinforce existing bonds between and with its members, and also to create contacts and catalyse meetings between and with all professionals. The keywords on our stand, located right at the heart of the exhibition, are friendliness, commitment and solidarity! Because we are stronger united, Unep strives to federate all landscaping companies and support the growth of their activities in the current fragile social and economic context.

PRESS KIT 2015PAYSALIA / 1 - A broad-spectrum event eagerly awaited by all sector professionalsP. 6

The three fi rst editions of Paysalia were extremely successful and we hope that the 2015 edition will beat all the records, confi rming our position as the leading trade fair for this sector. This position is hallmarked by its broad-spectrum, full and structured product range, targeted events, expertise in the sector and the friendliness, which unites all the participants and visitors.

A priority for sector professionals, Paysalia proposes several key periods, events and services prepared with the

federations and professional associations who sponsor the show: Conferences with a wide range of subjects, Public Authorities days, the National Plant Recognition contest, the Paysalia Trophie and also the special Wellgreen by Paysalia event organised to meet the needs of stadium, sports grounds and golf course professionals and to discover innovations on the market.

“The Carré des Jardinier” is a unique and prestigious contest at the show, which presents the gardens of 5 competitors for the Master Gardener 2015 title. This unique, national event attracts the best garden designers as it honours, through 5 beautiful gardens prepared to a theme set by the jury, the know-how of a whole profession and the human values it incarnates. The theme for 2015 is “recreation”.

An Innovation Area and an outdoor demonstration area place exhibitors’ innovations at the heart of the show. These zones will be previewed. Today Paysalia symbolizes the profession, which is why over 550 exhibitors are expected and why it is massively supported by sector.

1.3 A VARIED OFFER FOR EVERY SECTOR

Paysalia meets all visitors’ needs and guarantees a complete and structured offer for every business and sector. Landscaping firms, public authorities, landscape architects, what is on show is organized by grouping exhibitors by sectors to mirror visitors’ expectations.Co-producted with the Unep, l’Union Nationale des Entrepreneurs du Paysage (the French National Association of Landscape Entrepreneurs), the show has many patrons demonstrating that our corporation is a dynamic, active reality.

PAYSALIA KEY FIGURES Paysalia means:

570 exhibitors

14,000 professional visitors

15 conferences led by experts

5 gardens landscaped by the “Carré des Jardiniers” contestants

1 foreign delegation

10 federations

Paysalia 2015 is THE biennial rendez-vous for sector professionals from all over Europe. Paysalia won its reputation as the “Must” show by the success of the three previous editions. The 3rd edition was a big hit with 30% more exhibitors than the second. For our 4th edition, Paysalia, a unique show, expects even more exhibitors (550) and visitors (14,000) to confirm our top position. For our 4th edition, Paysalia has created a surprise with innovations ensuring professionals can get to know each other to chat and swap experiences and know-how.

This is why, for the first time, there will be a “French producers village” Coordinated by Val’hor and the FNPHP, this village shows French know-how and production in a special space mainly featuring plants. 39 companies, producers and nursery gardeners will be showing trees for alignments, ornamentals, pruning, conifers, shrubs, stems and there will also be rose growers, young seedlings, plants for dry gardens, ground cover as well as decorative and Mediterranean plants and bamboos.

>>>>>>>>>>> Paysalia hosts Belgium

With each new edition, Paysalia becomes more and more international. Between 2011 and 2013, the number of international visitors increased by 50%.

By hosting members of the BFG - FBEP, the Belgian Landscape Designers Entrepreneurs Federation.

Belgium has 7,800 entrepreneurs working in the “parks and gardens” sector. It is important to recognize and develop their multidisciplinary expertise and skills. This is the vocation of one Federation - the BFG/FBEP (Belgian Belgische Federatie Groenondernemers/ Fédération Belge des Entrepreneurs Paysagistes).

What is a typical profile of a Belgian landscaping entrepreneur? How is this entrepreneur represented? How is the Belgian market doing?

What is a typical profile of a Belgian landscaping entrepreneur or Federation member? Yves Heirman: There are 7,800 entrepreneurs in this sector today – a figure that has doubled over the last 10 years –, 2/3rds of whom are self-employed. These 7,800 entrepreneurs work in the “parks and gardens” sector. On average, companies employ 3 people. So these are mostly micro-companies. In Belgium there are only a few big companies (50 and more employees). Everyone in the sector knows the business in-depth (they carry out projects rather than tasks) and the “boss” is always on top of the job.

Tell us about your federation.

Yves Heirman: The federation started 10 years ago. It has approximately 850 members. Today, the strong point of the FBEP is that we have both a federal focus and roots throughout Belgium via our regional associations. We have a mission towards members and non-members. As our high membership gives us representativity, we act for the whole sector in decision platforms like the joint bargaining committee, welfare and promotion. The decisions we make thus apply to all entrepreneurs. We are also unanimous in decision-making. The FBEP is proud of its culture of transparency in the involvement of our members. Our elected members defend the interests and opinions of the base, the members. The FBEP is not affiliated with or connected to any political party and only defends the interests of professional entrepreneurs.

PAYSALIA1 - A broad-spectrum event eagerly awaited by all sector professionals /

What are the Federation’s main aims and objects?

Yves Heirman: The BFG/FBEP really works for entrepreneurs and the sector. And what we do gets results. The idea is that membership “helps us to help you”.The BFG/FBEP defends its members by being a force in negotiations, lobbying, by attracting good young people to the profession and by creating an even more positive image for professionals working in parks and gardens. It also organizes meetings. We are stronger united than divided. This is why we stimulate interprofessional contacts, promote knowledge exchanges, contribute scientific support and launch business initiatives...For this reason the FBEP sets out to keep the sector aware of currents and trends, changes in laws and regulations, and helps out with administration, space layouts, accountancy, invoicing, litigation, etc.The FBEP guarantees know-how and provides entrepreneurs wanting to develop with expertise by optimizing know-how through advice, information, knowledge exchange through training and study trips, by adapting know-how to the needs of today and tomorrow and by promoting professional quality work.Quality benchmarking, provided by the FBEP in Belgium and the Unep in France, is important, I would even say essential, for entrepreneurs to survive and succeed.

And, of course, your federation developped a partnership with PAYSALIA 2015. What do you expect to get out of being closer to the French market?

Yves Heirman: First of all, let me note that, all ELCA member countries encounter the same problems. The first advantage of coming closer to France is the fact that we do not have to reinvent the wheel on either side of our common border. But there are also the linguistic (and cultural) characteristics of Belgium which mean that approximately half our entrepreneurs are naturally attracted by France. In terms of representativity, we should never forget that, with a growing trend to globalization, our lifestyles and business styles are increasingly influenced by Europe. Collaboration between countries in general, and neighbouring countries in particular, is more and more essential. In terms of knowledge, meetings between professionals always bring value-addeds. It doesn’t matter if it is by the enrichment of know-how or concrete joint projects, every meeting adds benefits. In terms of the organization of meetings, it is obvious that federations like FBEP and Unep must communicate all the time so that members take advantage of and are connected by this spirit of exchange. In terms of professionalism, I truly believe that organizations like Unep and FBEP make a difference. Promoting professionalism in our entrepreneurs starts with the professionalism of the federations, a challenge in which France and Belgium (and other countries) are mutually supportive.Globalization also requires international collaboration. France, Belgium and the many other countries in the ELCA have already understood this message. Our next visit will be much more than as tourists. These initiatives make the winning difference in companies.

1.4 A GROWING MARKET

Good news! According to the latest figures published by the Unep the landscaping market is now mature.Even if up until now the sector seemed to have resisted the morose economic climate better than others, with constant growth and job creation, this year confirms its success and encouraging stability.Total landscaping sector sales have stabilised little by little over the last two years and were 5.34 billion euros in 2014. The number of firms in the sector has doubled over the last 10 years and the trend continues: + 0.7% since 2012, i.e. 28,600 firms.

Services to people, another important concept, has become a market in its own right. Services to people companies represent nearly one third of all businesses in the sector, with 11% of total sales. “These rises, although tiny, testify to the dynamism of the businesses and their ability to adapt to the crisis. They also show that wellbeing and health are paramount concerns in the daily life of all citizens,” says Unep President Catherine Muller. This maturity is consolidated by other data: 56% of all businesses invested in 2014 devoting 5.5% of their revenue to these investments. In addition, several signs show that they are becoming more professional: the percentage of employees with diplomas continues to rise – and is currently 84%. Training plays an important part in the dynamics of the business. In 2014, 22% of firms invested in training over and above their legal requirements and average sales per employee have risen slightly yet again. On the other hand, other figures are more disappointing: The number of jobs fell by 1.5% to 91,100 in particular because of slashed spending by public authorities, which significantly reduced their purchases.

In this year of the COP21, it is no longer possible to ignore the importance of landscaping fi rms and trades in meeting environmental and public health challenges. Our businesses have a bright future provided they continue to evolve the way they work, train, innovate, strive to meet customer expectations better and cater to specifi c French needs: every garden counts! says Catherine Muller.

2.NEW TRENDS REVEALED AT PAYSALIA

2.1 PAYSALIA 2015, A REAL WINDOW FOR INNOVATION

This new edition’s signature “Territoire d’innovation” will preview many innovations. A special Innovations Space will show a selection of products and services meeting market needs: respect of the environment with a reduction in the consumption of pesticides, better looks not requiring any specifi c maintenance… Paysalia is the show where innovations are revealed - and rewarded.

From the design to landscaping of gardens, golf courses and sports grounds, from the production of plants requiring little water to different lawn servicing methods, from the creation of products designed to reduce ecological impact and the quest for solutions aiming to reduce the quantity of plant care products used, many companies have or are developing innovations on the market.

Ecological solutionsfor better environmental protection

There have been a host of innovations by landscaping companies in the fi elds of R&D. “For all our companies the key to success is innovation. For this reason, the Unep develops and encourages innovative approaches by entrepreneurs of every kind (technical, social, managerial, etc.) by launching, in particular with Val’hor, the 1st edition of the innovation contest in 2014. This contest, reserved for entrepreneurs, attracted thirty candidates. Submissions were studied by a jury of professionals and two of them were rewarded for the quality of their approaches to innovation,” says a delighted Maud Thisse, Unep Technical Advisor specializing in “innovation”.

PRESS KIT 2015PAYSALIAP. 18 / 2- New trends revealed at Paysalia

Innovations focused on better management and waste processing have been well represented for several years. These improvements are illustrated by the popularisation of chippers and the generalised use of mulching, in particular of wood branch chips. New features include battery-powered portable materials as well as significant improvements to automated mowing machines.

The Pellenc Group, a world leader in electric hand-held machines, equipment and tools for park maintenance and specialized agriculture told us “For several years, we have adopted an overall environmental policy by proposing a complete range of “Zero Emission” products made in industrial facilities meeting eco-construction standards and aiming to reduce, through optimized logistics, the production of waste and its impact on the environment” explains Pellenc press attaché Jessica Galizzi.

In real terms, every year the group invests 8% of its turnover in R&D so as to be able to provide all its customers with a broad-spectrum of “Zero Emission” products powered by lithium-ion batteries. These tools have many advantages: fuel savings, a considerable reduction in noise levels enabling night-time and early-morning working near hospitals and schools, low weight and improved ergonomics plus less vibration for easier and safer handling. “The use of our tools is a complete answer to environmental standards, in particular to the prohibition of plant care products in green spaces managed by Public Authorities,” says Jessica Galizzi.

The scheduled end of the use of plant care products has also led to many innovations, in particular concerning weeding but also organic control in non-agricultural zones where French legislation has become much tougher and where demand is consequently booming. “Our customers are often in a technical dead end when confronted with pest and disease problems, as treatments must respect existing balances. That is the true challenge of organic control,” explains Koppert France ZNA market manager, Thibault Crance. For this reason, the company assists public authorities, golf courses and landscaping companies by providing innovations where effective solutions are often no longer or not yet available. “We invest 3% of our turnover in R&D every year. Our recent solutions specifically for green spaces were recognized by the profession as effective action tools,” says Thibault Crance who will present two new products at Paysalia: Trianum grass, an organic fungicide, which provides a preventive fungal protection to the roots of grasses and stimulates plant vitality. Tested on golf courses this product induced grasses more resistant to a wide range of stresses.

Eagerly awaited by professionals, the second innovation is an innovative trapping concept called Buxatrap. This pheromone trap attracts the males of the Box Tree Moth (Cydalima perspectalis) without the use of water or glue. Installed in April and recovered at the end of the season this trap will be available to professionals and in a vast network of garden-centres by 2016.

Differentiated green space maintenance

In addition, most public authorities and landscaping companies tend to want to differentiate green space maintenance through the development of new housing estate landscaping designs with concepts of neater green spaces requiring less work. The priority is thus recourse to mulching and plants requiring less maintenance. Many production seedbeds such as the Pépinière Filippi specialise in this field. “Our public authority and private customers want plants that do not need much water and maintenance, while ensuring that the gardens look good. All gardeners are mindful of the restriction in the use of pesticides and demands for plants and gardening techniques in line with this change“, explains Olivier Philippi, who told us that ground-cover plants are an effective alternative to grass. ”Allelopathic ground covering plants are real alternatives to weed killers. These plants diffuse chemical compounds, which naturally inhibit the germination of competing species. They thus make it possible to cut down on manual weeding and reduce the consumption of chemical weed killers”, adds Olivier Philippi.

This range of plants is already a great success since it was tested in different private and public gardens and in particular in the garden of the MuCEM in Marseilles, France.

Easy support solves by Cavac Tuteur Facile • HALL 6 - STAND 6J208

A 100% innovative trunk support kit

Why use a tree support? Whatever their size and however potted, trees that have just been planted are not well anchored. Their roots, close to the surface, do not ensure stability. Trees need to be propped for 2 to 3 years to guarantee that they grow straight and protect them from bad weather.

I am a landscape designer and gardener and up until now I was systematically confronted with the often immediate problem of having to replant trees. And to do this needs two people. Customers were unhappy - and so was I as replanting is an obvious waste of time.Innovative nature of the projectThis easy support solves all the problems. It consists of a tripod with an integrated strap.- The 3 anchor points stabilize the tree in soft ground, on

a slope or against the prevailing wind.- Its integrated, flexible and tough strap perfectly protects

the trunk. It readjusts itself as the tree grows and can be removed to facilitate pruning.

Xylit logs and mats by Aquaterra Solutions • HALL 5 - STAND 5C26

A natural fi bre with revolutionary environmentally-friendly propertiesXylit is a natural fi ber which exists in large quantities in Germany as a by-product of brown coal production. Trapped for millions of years, Xylit has developed exceptional properties due notably to a high number of polarized elements that binds nutrients, trace elements and pollutants. The numerous capillaries of the fi bers present a large specifi c surface, much larger than that of coir fi ber. So a thick bacterial “biofi lm” sets into place much quicker than for other fi bers used in bioengineering technics for erosion control. Moreover, the large number

of C-C liaisons as well as a C/N ratio of 215/1 provides Xylit with a very high mechanical resistance. Its lifespan is therefore much longer than coir fi ber (30 years against 5). Therewith, its high ion exchange capacity allows for a strong absorption yield of phosphate and nitrogen. Xylit is defi nitely a natural and ecological revolutionary fi ber with outstanding lifespan and water cleaning capacities. Uses in bio-engineering and ponds purifi cation. For some time now, current landscape styles feature XL formats, which add an optical illusion making spaces appear bigger, extending space and horizons. The economic crisis and the reduction of building plot areas oblige us to live in increasingly limited spaces – which is why we need designs to make them seem bigger. Our “mega-flagstones” meet this demand and are increasingly popular as they reflect this current and contemporary trend. These “mega formats” are just as meaningful in sober, minimalist, purified and narrow interiors as in more traditional and pastoral homes.Another benefit is that the reduction in the number of joints gives the impression of uniformity of space and elegance - and also facilitates cleaning!

2.2 THIS EDITION OF PAYSALIA HIGHLIGHTS GOLF COURSES AND SPORTS GROUNDS!

The creation of sports grounds, stadiums and golf courses will be particularly highlighted this year with a dedicated circuit and events. The sports grounds market has grown rapidly in recent years with many, particularly ecological, innovations. Most of these innovations will be presented at Paysalia. From the design to the installation of sports grounds, from maintenance to the treatment of grasses, from watering systems to maintenance equipment, from finishing to plant care… The whole market is booming. This is why Paysalia has reserved a separate space with many professional exhibitors and sponsors stands including FEDAIRSPORT Federation (Federation of Sports and Leisure Equipment suppliers).Through its sponsorship of Paysalia, FEDAIRSPORT aims to build recognition of the Federation by people active in the sports grounds sector: “I knew Paysalia as I exhibited at the previous show – I’m in this business. As a landscaping entrepreneur, I know that this show is a real opportunity to communicate, generate contacts and build long-lasting relationships with the other exhibitors. By sponsoring the event we profit from the high awareness of Paysalia and its outstanding image with sector professionals to build identity for our federation and foster discussions between members,” explains FEDAIRSPORT member Sylvain Burnichon..

A market open to technological and ecological innovation

Although the sports grounds market has experienced financial difficulties in recent years as public authority budgets have been slashed, some businesses have managed to succeed through ecological and technical innovation. To galvanize the market, professionals, increasingly concerned with ecology, focus on projects, which save water and state of the art irrigation systems with a wide choice of upgraded technologies. “People are increasingly committed to sustainable development and the related environmental constraints. They are all looking for products, which make it possible to use less water. For municipal parks and sports grounds, originators are increasingly sensitive to new technologies that make it possible to water more evenly” explains Rain Bird Europe Product Manager Ingrid Olive-Chahinian. Rain Bird Europe specialises in irrigation for both professional and individual gardeners. New nozzles, pressure regulation and smart timers are in great demand to obtain top quality results and optimise water consumption. Rain Bird Europe’s Ingrid Olive-Chahinian also says that “watering-related products such as autonomous flow-controllers are top priorities. Other products such as centralised IQ V2.0 software mean that Public Authorities can now automate the watering of their whole city. We also note a return to watering optimisation solutions at sports grounds”.

The sports grounds market is booming thanks to Euro 2016

Whereas the golf course market for landscaping professionals is stagnating because of widening competition but also the appearance of low cost chains, the sector manages to keep afl oat due to the sports ground market boosted by France’s organisation of Euro 2016. “The organisation of this event has led to the construction of new football stadiums and grounds. With the construction of these ultra-modern stadiums, new technologies for soil maintenance and reinforcement have appeared and have signifi cantly boosted the market,” says a delighted François Brouillet, President of Hydraparts, which specialises in spare parts and accessories for professional green and park keepers.

Customers make the most of solutions based on new technologies:

• reinforcement of hybrid soils with solutions which combine synthetic fi bres and cork or which insert synthetic fi bres into sandy ground ;

• the use of light therapy to preserve the growth of grass in winter and regenerate damaged grass

• scheduled maintenance technologies such as scalping grounds at the end of the season and weeding out graminates and replacing them with lawn grass.

According to François Brouillet, these solutions have many benefi ts for those Public Authorities managing their own maintenance and landscaping companies. “Using these new technologies, sports ground owners can control their playing fi elds during the winter and obtain top quality whatever the weather. Maintenance in preparation for climatic conditions is increasingly a priority because, in the medium term, it means being able to avoid emergency replacement in the middle of the winter. Although the initial investment is high, Public Authorities and individuals make fi nancial savings in the longer term since it is amortised over 6 to 7 years - 10 years for hybrid soils”.Public Authorities account for a big proportion of the sales of landscaping professionals (70 to 90% according to sector) and professionals remain competitive thanks to technological and ecological innovations!

2.3 INSTALLATION OF PUBLIC PARKS AND GARDENS: DURABLE CITIES PRIVILEGE PLANTS AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS

With the development of urban landscaping and the “downtown nature” concept, increasingly rooted in French urban policies, Paysalia has already focused on public authorities and their landscapers and gardeners for several editions. During the show an offer mainly targeted to gardens and parks professionals responsible for green spaces, town planning and downtown living is unveiled. Other Paysalia events include the Public Authorities Days with visits to landscaping features in Lyon and Greater Lyon and dedicated conferences.

The City of Lyon is a good example of territorial greening used to change its appearance and boost its attractiveness to tourists. Zoom on Lyon’s green development, which makes nature downtown an essential and multidimensional challenge.

Plants and water in the inner city

Lyon is a city with over 500,000 inhabitants and covers 4,800 hectares. Public and private parks, gardens and aquatic spaces cover over 40% of the total surface area of LYON Metropolis. “Plants and water are important here and signifi cantly contribute to making Lyon such a pleasant city - and a good place to live. We have over 436 hectares of public parks the biggest of which, the 105 hectare Parc de la Tête d’Or, is one of Europe’s largest city parks,” says Daniel Boulens, Lyon Parks and Gardens Director and Paysalia Steering Committee member.

To develop the place of nature in the City, Lyon has spent several years quantitatively and qualitatively reclaiming green spaces, with over 50 additional hectares created or redeveloped since 2011. The main emphasis is on biodiversity and bringing nature to the city.

Urban renewal projects to enhance the quality of life

From large-scale urban projects such as the banks of the river Rhone and the Confl uence district where the river Rhône and the river Saône join forces, to the smallest like local squares, green spaces are now everywhere. Every year, close to 10% of the city’s 300 parks and gardens are reworked. Recently, several big spaces have undergone a total metamorphosis, including:

• the Parc Sergent Blandan (Lyon 7th district) in which a former military barracks was transformed into a 17 hectare inner city park featuring terraces, conserved natural areas, multi-sports grounds, a skateboard park and leisure zones.• The restructuring of the 11 hectares of the Parc du Vallon (Lyon 9th district) into three distinct areas: a garden, a large clearing with a stream and an area of underbrush. • The landscaping of the 3 hectares of the Clos Layat in June 2014 brought new life to the Moulin à Vent district (Lyon 8th) and new parklands for this rapidly changing area. These fl owered meadows and woodlands, terraces and adventure playgrounds have created a place for nature, ideal for promoting biodiversity. In January 2015, the Park won an “Espaces Publics et Paysages” prize awarded by the Département du Rhône for the environmental quality of its project.

The multiplication of green spaces and public spaces and green lanes, plus the safeguarding of biodiversity in the inner city makes life more enjoyable for local inhabitants and contributes to public health.

“For both people and businesses, quality of life is now a major factor in deciding where to locate to. Over the last ten years we have seen major changes in the use of our urban space and our public space landscaping policies make a major contribution to this change” Daniel Boulens explains.

Nature in the City.A tourist magnet!

Plants strongly influence inhabitants’ perception of their city – and also that of visiting tourists. To promote towns and villages, the Villes et Villages Fleuris label was created over 50 years ago. It has since become a promotional “must”.

According to IPSOS/CNVVF quality of life studies published in 2011 and 2014, the Villes et Villages Fleuris label is a positive attraction for 93% of people polled, attracts tourists for 81% and for 78% demonstrates respect of nature and the environment. “Currently, holiday makers are bombarded with offers of destinations and the crisis context exacerbates competition. The label is truly an additional advantage for public authorities as it confirms the high quality of welcome tourists can expect. In the Rhône-Alpes region, 401 communes have won the label,” explains Severine André, Villes et Villages Fleuris manager for Rhône-Alpes Tourism. And in Lyon, this benefit is illustrated by the fact that the Parc de la Tête d’Or attracts 2.5 to 3 million visitors a year. “During two-day visits, many tourists spend half a day to “breath” in the Parc de la Tête d’Or, particularly as it is free!” Daniel Boulens adds.To guarantee a high quality of life for both inhabitants and visitors, municipalities are increasingly attentive to meeting their needs for nature and have adopted a host of innovations. Valorisation of plant-based structures, openings onto natural surroundings… Beautifying urban areas by highlighting nature downtown is a hallmark of modernity. “In innovation, mixing Culture and Nature is a good option, particularly by setting works of art in green spaces such as along the banks of the river Saône » says Séverine André, responsible for flowers in the context of Villes et Villages Fleuris at Rhône-Alpes Tourisme.

Expert environmental management

To preserve our green heritage, works carried out by the Direction des Espaces Verts fully respect the environment. Thus, Lyon civic employees work “with” and not “against” nature. They differentiate management practices between parks and gardens. For example, they plant species requiring little water; they use “smart” automatic watering techniques, irrigate without the use of drinking water and have eliminated pesticides. The City of Lyon enthusiastically supports this environmentally-friendly approach. This rigour and constancy won it ISO 14001 certification 10 years ago - and has significantly reduced ground keeping costs. Good housekeeping means it can invest in ever more eco-friendly techniques.

These good practices (rainwater management, for example) will be presented during the Paysalia Public Authorities Days on December 1st and 2nd, 2015. Organized with the City of Lyon, in partnership with AITF, Hortis and the CNVVF, these two days will be an opportunity to discover the latest innovations and the techniques adopted in visits to sites in Inner and Greater Lyon (Meyzieu, Vaulx-en-Velin, Chassieu-Décines) with councillors and park directors, managers and technicians.

The challenge for the candidates is to provide landscapes and materials that promote this sense of fun,” explains famous landscape architect .

HER PROJECT Getting away from it all - in beauty

The concept is a garden based on the symbols of school playgrounds: Lines of trees, concrete, gates, enclosing walls. Through the eyes of a child, they become extraordinary, idyllic, gardens. From the foam mattresses at the entrance designed for relaxing, via the fl owerbed of poisonous plants ideal for brewing magic potions, the gardens decant their individual, imaginary and poetic personalities. Visitors are led into these magic plant-fi lled spaces by a stream of marbles. Delicate warm-coloured beds contrast with very green, less organised areas and the variations of volumes and heights are an encouragement to play hide-and-seek or simply rest in the friendly jungle. The path then takes you under a shelter of branches and your “break” is over.

HIS PROJECT A Cheerful Garden

The concept is a garden composed of different areas (a space to live, a space to play and a space for contemplation) which you discover gradually and where you could almost lose yourself as in a maze. I imagine a garden where walkers are surprised and where each turn in the path opens up new horizons. The landscaped space is dominated by a red metal structure - the two entries and exits – leading to the three different spaces that are both poetical and enjoyable. At the bottom is the shed - the heart of the garden where the family comes together: the hut. The two other spaces, pergolas, are more private, ideal for games and imagination.

HER PROJECT It’s break time!

The plants are not only fl owers, herbs and vegetables. There are also barks, brushwood, dried fruit and seeds. All elements often taken for granted and which are nevertheless an infi nite source of creativity.Gardens perceived as sources of recreational magic.Nutshells, small wild poppies, thistles, grass and hay. In former days, so many varieties of plant species - fl owers, leaves, trees, vegetables and fruit - accompanied our walks and games and were used to make small toys.Spoiled by nature, kids and adults alike used to take the time to make whistles, small boats, catapults and slings, dollies and crowns of fl owers. The idea is to transmit the pleasure of a walk in a garden in which plants are reminders of all the poetry and forgotten moments of childhood.

The idea for her garden: 4 different zones connected by a dynamic path. They are highlighted by the botanical elements that support and create recreation: leaves, fruit and fl owers, woods, stems and grasses and, of course, seeds.Cross these four spaces and use these entertaining pauses to discover just how much poetry gardens inspire.

HIS PROJECT Three garden spaces

The garden is laid out as a suite of three rooms. Each space refers to three kinds of relaxation.

The fi rst garden evokes enthusiastic gardeners, a restricted space bordered by rigorously trimmed hedges, which surround a rich procession of plants lovingly accumulated over the years. There is nowhere to sit – real gardeners never sit down!

The second, bigger space mirrors the gardens of pageantry, imagined as a reception area, a place to have fun and give pleasure. Here, to cut down on maintenance, the plantations are minimalist but pleasant to see. The furniture is comfortable, on a broad sun-terrace facing a pool. The last garden space is for dreamers. Solitary souls for whom the contemplation of wild nature is pleasure enough. Here the seating is high above the ground so thoughts can soar to the skies through the foliage.

So that visitors forget the artifi ciality of this garden, a maximum of trees and broad-spreading plants will be positioned to confi ne the gaze.

Xavier PoillotLandscape Gardener and Master craftsman

HIS PROJECTStory of another summer

So visitors remember the fun they had as children, the spaces contain reminders like the wobbly little huts where they used to play – symbols of bygone fun. Recycled materials, old timbers… but also a library of toys and an impression of being as safe and protected as in a cocoon to make them conscious of the present as well as the past.

Recreation it is also an invitation to adventure. A simple pleasure – but how can you make adults feel the joy of doing something forbidden? To cross a wooden barrier to explore a space free of constraints to a delicious meadow in which the grass is greener and ideal for games or picnics in the lush grass.

Our memories of holidays near streams, rivers or ponds when we built dams and made all kinds of boats readily return to mind. A contemporary waterway enables visitors to remember their childhood fun with water.

Stimulating all the senses is a true priority and the sense of smell is titillated in many ways. With aromatic or perfumed plants, of course, but also by hinting at the gourmet delights of childhood with the joy of baking bread and cookies in a resolutely contemporary garden.

2.5 LANDSCAPING BUSINESSES: UNUSUAL AND HIGH-LEVEL TRAINING COURSES

Landscaping professions attract more and more people. Today, according to the Unep, there are around 91,100 gardening jobs and 28,600 companies in France. High growth in this sector. The number of companies doubled over the last 10 years. 62% of the companies are very young - under 8 years old. Before starting, most gardeners decided to obtain qualifi cations either to run a company through training or to be self-employed. Over these 10 years, the proportion of qualifi ed entrepreneurs grew from 85% to 93%.Almost 40% have a diploma proving two years studies after the “Bac” – French “A” level. More specifi cally, 80% have diplomas in landscaping or agriculture.

Paysalia supports the training of professional gardeners and future landscape designers through many events and conferences on the subject. These include the “Concours de Reconnaissance des Végétaux” – the plant identifi cation contest - during which, over two days, several candidates drawn from 16 French regions compete before a jury of experts, made up of professionals and teachers. Paysalia will be also a place for meetings and discussions between professionals through a Job Centre and a Job Dating session, working closely with agricultural job and recruitment specialists APECITA.

Becoming a landscape designer requires in-depth professional knowledge, perpetual curiosity about plants and know-how - specifi c to each creative designer. But to succeed in this business also requires passion. Many famous professional landscape designers recognized for their achievements have made their passion their business. They live in parks and gardens every day.

Interviews with two professional landscape designers who followed totally different and atypical career paths.

Interviews with famous landscape designer Louis Benech, who has executed nearly 300 gardens in France and abroad, member of the “Carré des Jardiniers” contest jury and honorary patron of the 2015 edition and landscape designer and originator Victor Lacaille, candidate for the title of Master Gardener 2015.

How did you become a landscape designer?

Louis Benech: By passion! I always liked the gardens, to have my hands in the soil, to take care of plants, take cuttings and sow… My grandmothers largely contributed to that. I spent a lot of time with them in their gardens. And also perhaps the fact of growing up on an island where there were very few trees… As a result, whenever I went to the mainland I ran towards trees and “hugged” them.

Victor Lacaille: My vocation started very early through luck, circumstances and people I met. I very quickly knew what I wanted to do in life and nourished this quest with personal experiences - a brief but very important childhood in Burgundy, running through the countryside, exploring the Bois des Moutiers and the names associated with it, “lessons in things” in Normandy gardens and a talent for drawing. Everything led me to where I am today and my happiness. My passion has become my profession. So my professional and private life are not fundamentally different.

When did you decide to make it your job?

L.B: After my law degree… because I always wanted to work in gardens but as I was no good at maths I couldn’t qualify as a forestry expert - my original dream. Once I’d got my degree, I left for England and became a horticultural labourer. I then gardened in Normandy for private homes and finally set up as a landscape designer. I learned “hands-on” with great professionals like Harold Hillier, Roy Lancaster and Peter Dummer…

V.L: : I decided to go into landscaping when I was 14. I had a summer job as a part-time gardener at the Bois des Moutiers, a park landscaped on the Pays de Caux cliffs in the 19th century. That was when I discovered the work of the famous duo Gertrude Jekyll and Sir Edwin Lutyens - mind-blowing! There and then I decided to become a landscape gardener. Passion, tenacity and luck did the rest. Today I work with Maxime Coache, friend and partner, with whom I share this passion and vision for landscapes. More than just beauty, gardens are about emotions. Peace and harmony are essential success factors when creating a garden. Without them, a garden is only a spatial contrivance stripped of sense and lightness. This is surely the reason why greatest creations in the history of gardens are associated with love stories.

Why do you think it is best to take training courses before becoming a landscape designer? What do you get from schools?

L.B: Training courses are important to learn all the tricks of the trade you need to bring your passion to life (management, for example). When you have not studied gardening but something else, everyone imagines that a suitable course will give you the tools of the trade but that is naive and not always the case. Preferring to learn “hands-on” is a good idea which works well. Every school has its merits: horticultural knowledge for some, the ability to imagine insane projects for others… But it is essential to spend a lot of time in gardens and design offices to see how work is carried out “on the ground”.

V.L: The wealth of landscape-related training courses is basically the very broad spectrum of subjects taught. Horticulture, botany, ecology, soil sciences, urban and landscaping history, “traditional” graphics, digital tools, etc. are all necessary for understanding a territory whatever its scale. The constant interaction between all these subjects is underlined very early on in all courses, encouraging students to adopt a rigorous methodology to find the right solutions to the often complex questions posed by the sites to be landscaped.

Formerly, landscape designers only gave landscapes “facelifts”. Today, artistic qualities are not enough. Landscapers also need other skills to meet new challenges to the evolution of a territory and those who live there. The parameters related to climate change, pressure on land, societal changes and new fl ow dynamics force contemporary landscape designers to propose installations which are more than mere stylistic effects but which tend towards a favourable context for people to live together in peace and harmony and protect their environment.

What advice would you give to kids thinking of making a career in this profession?

L.B: Spend a lot of time in gardens and glean your own botanical experiences. It is by looking at a garden growing, evolving and by trying things out that you come to understand the right combination of plants for different settings. And it is also important to visit gardens wherever and whenever you travel. Every garden has a story, every landscape designer has a way of working. For me, the answer lies in the soil, so check it out.

V.L : You will never live long enough to create a park and see it come to its full maturity. So start now! Be curious. Fear nothing. This job is not really diffi cult. The path is long, but the reward is the pleasure of creating beauty for yourself - and for others.

A JOB DATING AND A JOB CENTRE TO INITIATE CONTACTS

The principle of Job Dating Dating is a “fast” meeting (maximum 20 minutes) between a recruiter and a job seeker or someone wanting to take a step up the career ladder. It is a fi rst contact for jobs available at once or for medium-term projects. It also addresses long “end of studies” training courses.

A Job Centre organized by APECITA, specialists in employment and recruitment in agriculture, agri-foodstuffs and the environment enables recruiters to diffuse their job offers through posters in the middle of the show, repeated on their www.apecita.com website. Present at Paysalia, the APECITA is open for young people looking for jobs, personalized advice and a review of their CVs.

PAYSALIA HOSTS THE NATIONAL PLANT RECOGNITION CONTEST FINAL Organized by the Dardilly Horticultural College near Lyon, the fi nal of this contest will be held during the show. Sponsored by the French Ministry for Agriculture, Agri-foodstuffs and Forests and in partnership with Val’hor and the Unep, the National Plants Recognition contest has become a major Paysalia event.Contestants have to demonstrate perspicacity and understanding by recognizing 30 to 40 plants.Over two days, several candidates drawn from 16 French regions compete before a jury of experts, made up of professionals and teachers. Candidates have to give a detailed description of each plant - family, genus and species by fi lling in a form for each specimen. The winner is proclaimed French Plant Recognition Champion.
