The 2008 Nerello Mascalese Etna Rosso Erse reveals gorgeous innerperfume and a silky core of fruit in a medium-bodied style. This delicate,textured red is a great example of the quality top producers can reach inthis emerging appellation. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2013.

These are the first wines I have tasted from Tenuta di Fessina, located onthe slopes of Sicilys Mount Etna.

If I were wine is the theme of the third literary

competition founded by Silvia Maestrelli of Villa

Petrolio. We can imagine the literary prize as a

connecting thread between the family estate in

Tuscany and the Fessina Estate, with its ancient

volcanic millstone in Castiglione di Sicilia, on

the slopes of Mt. Etna overlooking the Nebrodi

and Alcantara. The prize was a personal ideato create a parallel to the art of wine-making.

TENUTA DI FESSINAI have been following Tenuta di Fessina for several years. These are the firstwines that begin to capture the promise shown by the early wines. The estateis owned by Federico Curtaz, who first achieved recognition as Angelo Gaja's

long-time agronomist.

Tenuta di Fessina Etna Rosso Il Musmeci 2008 91+ pointsThe 2008 Etna Rosso Il Musmeci is 95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% NerelloCappuccio from vineyards planted in 1920. Layers of dark fruit emerge fromthis powerful old-vine red, accentuated by hints of sweet tobacco and cedar.This is a decidedly intense style for the Etna. It will be interesting to see thedirection Musmeci takes from here.

Tenuta di Fessina Etna Rosso Erse 2009 88 points

Sweet candied cherries, crushed flowers, spices and anise are some of thenotes that emerge from the 2009 Etna Rosso Erse. This pretty, feminine red isquite typical of the wines of the Etna.

Finding Value in Central and Southern Italy

On the subject of value, I have decided to incorporate our coverage of value-priced wines into the respective regional reports in order to give readers

access to budget-friendly wines throughout the year rather than in oneconcentrated article. Central and southern Italy remains an excellent source forreasonably priced whites and reds across all regions and grape varieties. Thebreadth of choice is truly staggering. Because the center and south are stillyoung oenological regions (from a modern-day standpoint) I often find theentry-level wines are just as enjoyable (if not more so) than many estatess topwines, which frequently fall prey to the desire to do too much.
