Resident of the month: Naomi Holboy
Naomi is a former resident of Montana, she moved to
Skagit County in 1970 to begin her nursing career.
It was quit an adventure to reach that stage of her mile
stone of her life. In June 22, 1959 she married Wendell
Holboy and started her life as a wife and homemaker. At
that time Wendell was a meat cutter and after a time he
was laid off from his job. The couple knew that had to
make some changes in their life. With that in mind Wen-
dell entered college and eventually graduated with his
teaching certificate in 1966.
When Naomi was a new mother with her first son, Gary she entered college with a nursing
degree in mind. During that time Naomi was caring for the home, baby and studying for ex-
ams. Naomi says it best by saying; “It was a struggle, but oh how we loved each other.”
And her hard work paid off when she received her nursing degree. Wendell was teaching at
Stanwood High School when Naomi began what would become a 19 year nursing career.
Naomi sums up those 19 years as exciting and fulfilling. She went on to say; “ I thought I was
a damn good trauma nurse, I did my best when things got crazy.”
Wendell and Naomi eventually moved to Mount Vernon with their 3 sons, Gary, David and
Phil. They lived within walking distance of the hospital so she had an easy commute.
While at the hospital Naomi forged a lifelong friendship with Ruth and Charlie Thomas. To-
gether they hiked sections of the Pacific Crest Trail, traveled to Vietnam, China, Russia and a
cruise to Chile. Wendell passed suddenly and friends have been invaluable to Naomi. She
states that she feels very cherished and loved by many. Naomi is also an avid reader and a
movie enthusiast and she loves living in La Conner.

Drink plenty of water! Caffeine and sodas are not optimal to get your fluids up when it’s hot.
Use sunscreen when you are going to be out in the sun. Even a strong glare can cause a sunburn.
Snack light! Fresh fruit is a cool refreshing way to fill your craving for sweets.
Protect your eyes, wear sunglasses.
A cool washcloth on the neck will help you feel better and help bring your body tem-perature down.
Remember your little furry friends! If you wouldn’t walk barefoot on the pavement, they shouldn’t either. And they need water and cool place to rest.

Where were you born? New Market Ontario, Canada
Do you have any hobbies? I target shoot with a compound bow and I
do needle felting and make greeting cards and stamping
What did you want to do when you grew up? I wanted to be a doctor
What was your first job? I babysat neighbor kids and I was a cashier at
a store.
What is your favorite book? “The Day of Ahmed’s Secrets” I got this
book for Christmas. It is a children’s book but it has a strong message
that is very moving.
Madeline is the activity assistant, she lives in Oak Harbor with her hus-
band, Steven

Painting a Better Future
We are fortunate to live in a community where art plays such an important role . It’s why many of us live in La Conner! We are also lucky to have some of the most tal-ented individuals living right here at the Inn. This month we are doing a really interesting event. It starts with our residents and our staff, who will be taking brush to can-vas and creating works of art.
Then on July 23 we will be hosting a very special gallery event. These works of art will be on view and we will have a silent auction with all proceeds going to support the La Conner Retire-ment Inn’s contribution to the Alzheimer’s Association. There will also be some gift baskets up for auction as well. Wine and scrumptious hors d’oevres will be served as you browse the gal-lery and bid on your favorite works. Make sure to invite your friends and family to this won-derful event. And it’s not to late to support the La Conner team on the 2016 Walk to End Alz-heimer’s in September17. It’s a 3 mile walk in Burlington so come cheer us on! You can con-
tribute on line, or you can leave a donation with Gisele or Jennifer.
