PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Wow, this year is really going fast. September was national sewing month. Hope you were able to spend some
time sewing and maybe finishing some of those UFO’s you have lying around. Now that the weather is turning
cooler, I hope to really get back in the swing of sewing and maybe finishing that jacket I started a couple of
years ago.
Our annual election meeting was on October 27, 2012. Please welcome Jackie Cruz as our new chapter presi-
dent, effective January 1, 2013. She’ll still have the remaining CAB members to support her but she’ll also need
your support and help to keep our chapter running. There are several appointed positions available such as Com-
munity Service, Publicity, Retail Liaison, etc. Please step forward and volunteer to fill a vacant position.
The Kid Comfort Quilts will be an ongoing community service project for as long as there is a need. You can
contact Rhoda Keegan if you would like to participate in this very worthwhile community service project. Each
neighborhood group and individual can do whatever community service project they wish. Just remember to
turn in your hours for the projects on which you worked.
We do not yet know what the national project will be for 2013. As soon as we have this information, you will be
notified. See our website “sandiegoasg.org” for the latest information regarding our chapter.
If you have any suggestions or ideas for workshops or other events, I’m sure Loyce Swedberg would appreciate
you contacting her and perhaps volunteering to help. There may have been a speaker you saw at the Houston
convention or other event that impressed you and you would like to have a seminar with that person.
I can’t believe this is my last President’s Message for the chapter. Time has flown by. Thanks to all of you for
your support and encouragement during the last three years. It has been really appreciated.
Happy sewing.
Patricia Burns

MEET THE 2013
CAB OFFICERS
Phyllis Lewcock, Secretary
Loyce Swedberg,
VP Special Events
Jackie Cruz, President
Jackie McDonald, Treasurer
Retha Meneghini,
VP Membership
It was a beautiful sunny day in Escondido when 45 women met at Quilters’ Paradise
for the 2012 Annual Meeting and Election of the 2013 Chapter Advisory Board
Officers. The meeting was conducted by our two vice presidents due to the absence
of Pat Burns, who is recovering from knee surgery. We wish her a speedy recovery.
In addition to the election of new officers, we were treated to a fashion show of gar-
ments, accessories, and clever items featured by our talented and creative members.
Everyone enjoyed a delicious pot luck lunch, raffles, several games of “Quilto” and
wonderful friendship. Thanks to all who participated and helped with the event.
Everyone helped to make it the fun day we’ll be talking about at our Neighborhood
Groups in the months ahead.
Our new President-elect gave a few brief words and encouraged everyone to come
forward in the coming year to continue making this an even stronger chapter.

ALL ABOUT NEEDLES QUESTION:
Can you please explain to me what the numbers on the needles mean, and what needle should I use for what project. I
embroider and quilt. So please help me with what ones I should use. I know they say for embroidery or universal, but I
really would like to understand what the numbers mean.
ANSWER: (From Embroideryonline.com)
There are actually two sets of numbers on needles. There is the number that tells what system (or type of machine) the
needle will work on and that will be something like 130R, 15x1, or 700H. Your manual will tell you what system your
needle needs to be.
The numbers 75/11, 80/12, etc. refer to the size of the needle. (75, 80 is the US size and 11, 12 is the European or Japa-
nese size.) The smaller the number, the smaller the needle. I am totally opposed to Universal needles. They are sort of
like "one size fits all" which means that they really don't "fit" anybody. I believe you should use a Sharp needle for
woven fabrics and a Ball Point needle for knits. A Universal needle is somewhere in between the two.
You'll want to use an embroidery needle for embroidery. An embroidery needle's eye is the next size larger to accommo-
date the high speed of embroidery machines. Because the thread passes through so fast, the larger eye helps keep it from
breaking.
Organ Embroidery Needles have been tested to be the best embroidery needle on the market today. If your dealer doesn't
carry Organ Embroidery Needles you can get them at www.embroideryonline.com.
Organ Titanium Embroidery Needles last 5 times as long as a regular needle. If you do a lot of embroidery, I would sug-
gest you invest in these. My favorite needle is 80/12 sharp, titanium because I do a lot of quilting and sewing on woven
fabrics.
I usually mark the top shank of the needle with a permanent marker, red for sharps, blue for ball points. (The way I re-
member this is that sharps can bring blood – which is red, and blue is the color of the ink in a ball point pen.) That way I
know what I have in my machine before I start.

The San Diego ASG yahoo group is just for members of the San Diego ASG. This yahoo group is an excellent way to
share information with a large number of members in a very easy manner. We can share meeting information, files,
photos, hints & tips, and projects with members throughout the Chapter.
Several of our neighborhood group leaders are using “Yahoo Groups” as a means of reminding all San Diego
members of up-coming neighborhood group meetings. This is a wonderful way of prompting members to ven-
ture out into the wonderful world of all that we have to offer. Updated information of program changes as well
as supply lists are often included. It’s easy to sign up. Just follow these steps:
Sign on to www.yahoogroups.com
If you do not belong to any other Yahoo group, follow the instructions for “signing up”.
You will create a Yahoo ID & a password.
You will have to agree to their terms, however, there is NO CHARGE for belonging to a Yahoo Group.
Once you are a member, search for our group by typing in sandiegoasg in the search field.
Click on Join the Group and follow the on-screen instructions.
Carol Filbeck will get your request and approve your membership.
If you have any questions, contact Carol Filbeck at [email protected] or by phone at (858) 566-9699.
She will walk you through the process.
Communication makes up a better more cohesive group and enables us to share with each other.
VISION ART MUSEUM—SIP, SAVOR AND STROLL
Do you have a quilt, fine hand-crafted items such as bowls, vases, baskets, bracelets, scarves, etc.
or other art you would like to donate to Visions Art Museum’s annual fundraising event? We are
looking for table top accessories made from glass, ceramics, or metal (think Crate and Barrel) and
fashion accessories (think Chico’s) also vintage quilts and textiles. This festive pre-holiday art sale
is Saturday, December 1st from 6-9 PM at Visions. We’re calling it Sip, Savor and Stroll.
We’ll be selling art and fine craft priced for all budgets with a range of artist-made work that
appeals to our quilting community, friends, neighbors, artists, and collectors. We’re looking
for items that make great gifts—think about what you would enjoy receiving or giving as a gift.
We would appreciate donations for opportunity baskets with a variety of themes—Wind and
chocolate are always poplar along with cooking, toys, textiles, bath and body, and many others.
Thank you in advance for your donations and your support of Visions Art Museum.
Please contact Judy at [email protected] to arrange your donations.

OPERATION KID COMFORT
SEW & FLIP METHOD
Thanks to our quilting sisters in the
Ramona Back Country Quilters, we have
a new, faster method of completing the
Operation Kid Comfort quilts.
For many of you who are true quilters,
this won’t be new, but it sure is easier.
The directions for the Sew & Flip
method can be found on the Yahoo site
in the “Files” section.
The next time you pick up quilts for
completion, ask for the new directions.
According to the “testers” this saves con-
siderable time.
So, now you can do twice as many in
half the time.
Quilts are usually available on Fridays
for pick up. Contact [email protected]
