(Continued from Page 1)drew out Bill’s ticket for the major prize.Thank you to Bill Brooke VK2ZCW forprinting the nice certificates which werepresented to all the Amateurs who attendedthe Anniversary Lunch. A full report withphotographs of the event appears in thismonth’s Oxtales. Thanks to Tim MillsVK2ZTM and Trevor Thatcher VK2TT forthe report and photographs in November2011 Amateur Radio magazine.

Saturday the 15th of October marked a mile-stone for the club. Not only did one groupof club members set up VK2BOR in theclub’s communications caravan and partici-pate in the Jamboree on the Air, but a se-cond group of club members set up their in-dividual portable stations in the forest westof Heron’s Creek and provided safety com-munications for the Bago Forest Classic carrally. It is the first time that the club hasparticipated in two simultaneous majorevents. Thank you to everyone who partici-pated on the day. It was an impressivedemonstration of the ability of a large num-ber of club members to go out in the field atone time when the need arises. The twoevents are reported in both words and pic-tures in this issue of Oxtales. Special men-tion must go this month’s editor John Han-sen VK2AYQ who started with the JOTAsetting up in the morning and then went toHeron’s Creek to assist at Rally Headquar-ters in the afternoon. Like all good reportershe wielded his camera at both venues!

Thank you to Ashley Anderson VK2XSOfor travelling to Port Macquarie to presentan inspirational lecture on APRS at theclub’s monthly general meeting on the 1st ofOctober 2011. APRS is short for AutomaticPacket Reporting System. The APRS bughas bitten a number of our members. Thisoccurred when Ashley demonstrated capa-bilities of the free on line APRS server to-gether with a representative sample of af-fordable hardware for building APRS GPS

trackers. Club members are organizing a bulkpurchase of hardware. Contact Arthur MonckVK2ATM for more information if you are in-terested. The club will soon be installing anAPRS digipeater at the VK2RPM MiddleBrother Mountain repeater site. Rod and Brenda Worthing presented a veryinformative talk on the HCJB HF Broadcast-ing system (see page 11).

Members and their families and friends arecordially invited to attend the club’s 2011Christmas Party under the covered area at Set-tlement Point Reserve on Saturday the 3rd ofDecember 2011. Settlement Point Reserve isthe park just beyond the Settlement Point ferryramp on the southern side of the Hastings Riv-er. To get to Settlement Point just head northalong Park Street past Settlement City and fol-low the road all the way to the ferry. Set uptime at the park is from 9am. Finishing timewill be approximately 2pm. As usual the clubwill provide a free sausage sizzle lunch fromthe on- site barbeque. Please bring your ownsalads and other nibbles. A fruit salad and icecream dessert will be provided free, as will teaand coffee together with soft drinks. The clubcommunications caravan will be on site. It willbe a great opportunity to see the results of thehard work done by John McLean VK2KC andhis helpers in fitting the caravan with a newaxle and wheels. The caravan now looks quiteimpressive with its much increased groundclearance and new support stands. The tea andcoffee and soft drinks will be available fromthe caravan.

A short December club monthly general meet-ing will be held at Settlement Point Reserve inconjunction with the Christmas Party.

Oxley Region Amateur Radio ClubInc. 40th birthday. (As reported in Ama-teur Radio by Tim Mills VK2ZTM)

The Oxley Region Amateur Radio Club cele-brated their 40th anniversary with a lunch onSunday 2 October at Port Macquarie GolfClub. There were 40 in attendance on a ratherwet day, which did not detract from the en-joyment of the occasion. The club had beenformed in 1971 to develop a two metre re-peater for their region. Lucky door prizeswere presented with the major one donatedby Radio Supply going to Bill VK2ZCV. Thesecond draw—provided by Jaycar of PortMacquarie—going to Judy VK2HZV. Forthose without callsigns, prizes were won byLinda Court and and Dee Pilley.

JOTAJamboree On The Air

Henry VK2ZHE

It was a wild and windy rain swept day onSaturday 15 October 2011 when JohnVK2KHB towed the caravan to the SeaScouts hall to set up for JOTA.

Bill VK2ZCV, Henry VK2ZHE, LyleVK2FCVI and MarkVK2FMGM set up theclub’s Communications Caravan adjacent tothe Port Macquarie Sea Scouts’ hall and oper-ated the club station VK2BOR for the Jambo-ree on the Air.

Bill VK2ZCV, Mark VK2FMGM and Lyle VK2FCVIpreparing the station.

The HF propagation was not good and 2 me-tres was used for the contacts. HF propaga-tion has not been good in previous JOTAevents. As an interesting aside the amount ofRF hash emanating from the motel next doorwas considerable at several S points on thesignal meter.

Approximately 40 Scouts and Guides fromPort Macquarie and the Camden Haven tooktheir turns at the microphone to qualify forone of the communications badges.

Even though most of the Guides andScouts were familiar with using mobile tele-phones and the internet for social networking;their enthusiasm for using radio as a commu-nications medium was pleasing to see.

Bago Forest Classic Car Rally

The day started off wet as we gathered at thereccy point at the Herons Creek turn bay justoff the Pacific Highway.

From there we were directed or in some caseswere led to our respective points. Eventhough it was raining, the Forestry roads werein good condition, all positions were taken upwithout mishap.

By mid morning the rain had abated and alt-hough muddy underfoot, it turned out to be agreat day.

(Setting up at a communications point)

Despite a reccy carried out in the week priorto the event to check what frequencies wouldwork by John VK2KC, Arthur VK2ATM,Bruce VK2HOT and Keith VK2FKJAchecked each point to make sure contactcould be maintained with the repeater onMiddle Brother. It was decided that we coulduse 70 cm through the Middle Brother repeat-er, in some cases communications were mar-ginal but copyable and even one point wasmarked with rocks to ensure on the day theantenna would be in that exact position toguarantee that contact could be made.

For the newcomers, the fact that 6" made thedifference between being able to communi-cate or not was a new lesson to be learned

about the vagaries of 70 cm propagation indifficult terrain.

Strangely as the day wore on and conditionschanged, (maybe as the foliage dried?) mostof us found that 70 cm couldn't be used, sowe reverted to 2 metres and managed to ac-complish 2 way contact.

We all were in for a few surprises, somefound that a lack of working knowledge witha borrowed transceiver and the need forCTCSS was a problem, some experienceddefective connectors which made us painful-ly aware that if we are called on for commu-nications in any emergency we would behave to be better prepared. It was a greatwakeup call!

(Sideways motoring was the order of the day)

Scott Keys the event organiser was pleasedwith the outcome on our stage, as their com-munications system, UHF CB, wouldn't workdue to the mountainous terrain.

There was a serious accident on stage 4 (alsostage 8 as there were 5 stages each stage runtwice) that forced the officials to cancel thestage, thus shortening the event, so most ofus made it home by 8pm.

Beechwood Billy Cart Derby6 November 2011

The 6th November was time once again forthe running of the 2011 Beechwood BillyCart Classic. A traditional day which seesthis little rural village comes to life with allthe excitement of a real country fair. Theevent was very well attended this year.(Continued on Page 8)

(Continued from previous page)Car parking was at a premium with vehicleslining both sides for the full length of theMain Street right down to the general storeand beyond. Parties of spectators gathered ingroups to occupy all the best vantage pointsfrom which to witness the white knucklefeats of the competitors in their highly tech-nical and streamlined, homemade billy carts.Speeds in excess of 90 kph were attributed tosome of the leading vehicles and all but onecompleted the course without mishap.

Cart 10 was forced out, experiencing wheelor suspension failure about half way downthe track. Understandably at these speeds andgiven the steep topography of the track, it isnecessary to officially close the road andmonitor progress of carts through the tight, often blind and twisting turns in order to en-sure the safety of all concerned. To this endthe organisers enlisted the aid of seven flagmarshals, plus members of the Oxley RegionAmateur Radio Club to provide communica-tions as well as additional flag marshals.

Richard Court VK2CHC once again organ-ised and coordinated this task and would liketo express his gratitude and appreciation toall volunteers for their enthusiastic and effi-cient participation, without which it would beimpossible to safely run the event.

Trevor VK2TT looked after the linking ofthe public address system in the main streetto the commentary van via 146.425 MHzsimplex. While Charles VK2KCE , providedtechnical support and equipment monitoringin the commentary van. (How is your heartCharles?)

Henry VK2ZHE , in his usual competentmanner, setup and ran Base Control on146.500 MHz FM simplex from his vehiclenear the start line at the top of the mountain. He reported, that while some of the checkpoints in the more heavily tree shrouded are-as were a little down in signal strength, all

were perfectly readable. A very pleasing re-sult considering that most were using handheld.

The eleven check points as staffed, in numer-ical order , were:Lewis VK2AG , Richard VK2CHC , BillVK2ZCW , Ross VK2RR (Thanks for thephoto), Stewart VK2KSM , Rob VK2CRF,Mark VK2FMGM , Arthur VK2ATM(Motorcycle Mobile) John VK2FJAA , DaveVK2AYD and last but by no means leastKeith VK2FKJA

The event organisers were very appreciativeof our help and expressed their thanks againto one and all for a job very well done,.Please keep next year in mind, the date ofwhich will be posted in OXTALES as soonas we are advised so we can confirm num-bers well in advance.

Club Grants

The Wireless Institute of Australia has giventhe club a grant of $1,500 towards the cost ofdeveloping the mobile communicationsshack.

The flowing is from the Wireless Institute ofAusralia’s Club Grants Committee Report20011.

1 Oxley

We felt that the Oxley Region Amateur Ra-dio Club has presented a very comprehen-sive application with very detailed costing. This is a vey small club with only 34 mem-bers of which 17 are WIA members. This isborderline in regard to the membershiprequirement. The addition of a mobileshack as a promotional tool to attract newmembers has some merit, in addition toField days and emergency communications(Continued on Page 9)

We suggest support for this club to the tuneof $1500.

A huge thank you to John VK2KC andKeith Anderson VK2FKJA for their excellentwork in developing the submission to theWIA.

President’s Note: The WIA is our Nationaland International representative on mattersrelating to Amateur Radio. The WIA ismade up of people interested in amateur ra-dio such as ourselves and depends upon themembership. In addition to looking afterRadio Amateur interests both Nationallyand Internationally the WIA publishes Ama-teur Radio magazine and sponsors affiliatedclubs.

Technical talk from the NetCrystal Oscillators and Circuits

Submitted by Bill VK2ZCV

This feature is quite lengthy and quite tech-nical and as such will from the basis of acontinuing article in OXTALES over sever-al issues.

It is often required to produce a signalwhose frequency or pulse rate is verystable and exactly know. This is im-portant in any application where any-thing to do with time or exact measure-ment is crucial.

It is relatively simple to make an oscilla-tor that produces some sort of a signal, but another matter to produce one of rel-atively precise frequency and stability.AM radio stations must have a carrierfrequency accurate within 10Hz of its as-signed frequency, which may be from530 to 1710 kHz. SSB radio systems

used in the HF range (2-30 MHz) mustbe within 50 Hz of channel frequency foracceptable voice quality, and within 10Hz for best results.

Some digital modes used in weak signalcommunication may require frequencystability of less than 1 Hz within a periodof several minutes. The carrier frequencymust be known to fractions of a hertz insome cases. An ordinary quartz watchmust have an oscillator accurate to betterthan a few parts per million. One partper million will result in an error ofslightly less than one half second a day, which would be about 3 minutes a year. This might not sound like much, but anerror of 10 parts per million would resultin an error of about a half an hour peryear. A clock such as this would needresetting about once a month, and moreoften if you are the punctual type. A pro-grammed VCR with a clock this far offcould miss the recording of part of aTV show. Narrow band SSB communi-cations at VHF and UHF frequencies stillneed 50 Hz frequency accuracy. At 440MHz, this is slightly more than 0.1 partper million.

Ordinary L-C oscillators using conven-tional inductors and capacitors canachieve typically 0.01 to 0.1 percent fre-quency stability, about 100 to 1000 Hz at1 MHz This is OK for AM and FMbroadcast receiver applications and in oth-er low-end analogue receivers not requir-ing high tuning accuracy. By careful de-sign and component selection, and withrugged mechanical construction, .01 to0.001%, or even better (.0005%) stabilitycan be achieved. The better figures willundoubtedly employ temperature compen-sation components and regulated powersupplies, together with environmentalcontrol (good ventilation and ambienttemperature(Continued on Page 10)

(from previous page)regulation and “battleship” mechanicalconstruction. This has been done in somecommunications receivers used by themilitary and commercial HF communica-tion receivers built in the 1950-1965 era, before the widespread use of digital fre-quency synthesis.

An oscillator is basically an amplifier anda frequency selective feedback network(Fig 1). When, at a particular frequency, the loop gain is unity or more, and the to-tal phaseshift at this frequency is zero, orsome multiple of 360 degrees, the condi-tion for oscillation is satisfied, and thecircuit will produce a periodic waveformof this frequency. This is usually a sinewave, or square wave, but triangles, im-pulses, or other waveforms can be pro-duced. In fact, several different wave-forms often are simultaneously producedby the same circuit, at different points. Itis also possible to have several frequen-cies produced as well, although this isgenerally undesirable.

In an oscillator, the feedback network deter-mines the frequency and stability of thegenerated signal. Frequency is of course thenumber of cycles per unit time produced andis generally specified in Hz, kHz (1000 Hz),MHz (1 million Hz), or even GHz (1 billionHz). Stability is another matter. What we aretrying to express is how much the oscillatorfrequency will change in a certain amountof time.

The key here is the length of time. Longterm stability is generally expressed in fre-quency drift (delta F or F) per unit timeor specified time interval. Long term driftis caused by component aging due to elec-trical, thermal, physical, and chemicalchanges in components over a relativelylong (100 hours or more) time period. Thisis generally, but not always is generallycompensated for by readjustment of circuitparameters, either manually or automatical-ly. Short-term stability is usually caused bycomponent changes due to circuit heating,warm-up, temperature fluctuations, and in-stability of components. (to be continued)
