An Affiliated Chapter of Society of Decorative Painters www.osceoladecorativeartists.com President’s Message Hello to all ODA Members! Well, here it is February, and we're well on our way to some fun projects in 2017. I totally enjoyed last month's project taught by Judi. In fact, it's hung up and my husband asked me how long it's been there. (LOL!) It looks really nice. Guess he was wondering if he hadn't seen it (you know how husbands can sometimes be). Thank you again to Judi for letting me play in the goop! February is going to be another new technique for most of us. As you know, I've fallen in love with colored pencil, and Pam will be teaching us a fun project on a new and different surface using the pencils. I'm really looking forward to it. Now to get the pattern onto the vellum and I'll be ready. We have an opening in our April meeting and Lynn and I have been tossing around some ideas. What do you think of a major "Show and Tell" where everyone brings in some works of art, some old, some new, whether we've already seen them or not? People's Choice Prize? Perhaps getting four or five of us together to give short "5 Minutes of Education" type presentations? We'll discuss the possibilities at our February meeting, perhaps the "Members' Appreciation Luncheon" for 2017 could be then. Get your ideas flowing and we'll talk about it on the 18th! And remember, we'll be having Mark Menendez coming in March for a weekend of fun with colored pencils, using his new technique with acrylics. Hmmmm.....wonder what that is? Can't wait!! I'd like to give a shout out to some new members who will be joining us at our February meeting. Welcome ladies! We are happy that you have joined us and look forward to introducing you to our Chapter this month. I hope you enjoy us as much as we will enjoy welcoming you. As you know, our Society Conference this year will be in Daytona in May just a short time and distance away. Won't you consider attending? The energizing atmosphere at Conference is alway at high level. It gets your creative juices flowing, just by being there. So much excitement, you can't help but be happy. And the shopping! (I won't even go there. You should see the stuff I still have in my garage!) I will be attending this year and will look forward to seeing some of you and some of my old friends from years past. I'm late in getting this letter to our Newsletter Editor, and I'm sure she's patiently waiting, so I will sign off for this time. See you on the 18th. Workshop/Seminar News – Lynn Ingersoll

February 18, 2017

Cin – Tangle “Vintage Wine Passion” Designed by Cindy Ohama

Taught with permission by Pam Caley

Surface: 9” x 12” DuraLar Matte Film 2-sided (available from teacher for $1)

Optional: 9” x 12” Strathmore Bristol Vellum Pattern Packet: Purchase is required. Cost will be $8. Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils:

940 Sand 1099 Espresso 937 Tuscan Red 927 Light Peach 1001 Salmon Pink 929 Pink

1031 Henna 120 Sap Green Light 992 Light Aqua 907 Peacock Green 935 Black 1024 Blue Slate

1025 Periwinkle 1027 Peacock Blue 943 Burnt Ochre 941 Light Umber 947 Dark Umber

Permanent ink fine tip pens: Micron Pigma, Faber Castell Pitt pens, or

Sakura. Depending on the brand you buy, sizing is different. Basically you will need at least a couple of sizes. I used a Micron Pigma 005, 01 and 03. If you only want to buy one pen, then I advise you go with the finest tip, otherwise it will be difficult to add the small details. Other Supplies: Kneadable eraser, paper stump for blending (you may want a variety of sizes, but a medium one will do), hand held pencil sharpener, small piece of fine grit sandpaper to ‘clean the stump” with, soft mop brush or makeup brush to whisk any debris off your paper, firm support board, such as a clipboard, drawing board or a smooth mdf panel with a bull-dog type clip to hold the paper in place while you work (9” x 12” or larger). Optional: OMS (Odourless Mineral Spirits such as Gamsol) I can supply in class, if you decide to use it. Pre-Class prep: At least 24 hours prior to class: Clip or lightly tape your Dura-Lar (or paper) to a firm smooth support board, such as mdf hardboard or a clipboard (they are usually mdf, but smooth plastic will work as well. Transfer the basic pattern onto your surface. Then Ink the basic lines, then the detailed lines (which are done free-hand referring to the reference photo). It is important that your ink has dried (and cured) prior to applying the colored pencil, otherwise it may smudge. TIP: If you are using the Dura-Lar, you can “clean up” small inking errors with “Windex with Ammonia D” on a small brush which has been dipped in the Windex and blotted on a paper towel. Allow this area to dry well before trying to ink over it again! If you are using any other paper surface, you cannot correct inking errors.

Chapter’s Minutes – Debbie Smith, Secretary

Osceola Decorative Artists - Meeting January 21, 2017 Meeting called to order by President Mary Frances at 10:06 We had one guest attending today, Sheila Lyon introduced by Pam Caley 1st VP Lynn Ingersoll reviewed upcoming workshops and seminars: The sample of the February workshop was shown and teacher Pam Caley explained details. Pam had surfaces, instructions

and pattern today at the cost of $4 for an e-packet and $7 for printed packet. There is inking to be done prior to workshop and for best results have it done at least 2 days prior.

Lynn had samples of projects for the Mark Menendez seminar available to vote on today. It was the final chance for

anyone planning on attending to vote. Attendees were asked to vote on two projects and the final choices were to be announced. At the end of the meeting, the vote count was that we would be doing the Frog project on Saturday and the Eagle project Sunday with Mark Menendez. Pictures will be in the newsletter and on Mark’s website. Both projects are colored pencil.

Members voted on a watercolor workshop and Lynn asked for suggestions for project and possible teacher. She will

pursue and let members know. Membership: Jill Terrell will assume the position of 2nd Vice President which includes membership responsibilities. Confirmed to the membership that the Treasurer’s audit was done and the proposed budget would be printed in the

February newsletter. No treasurer’s report, motion to accept treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter by Debbie Smith, seconded by Bertie Porter.

Sunshine: Miriam McCleese agreed to accept responsibility of Sunshine committee. Decorative Dollar: Our newest member Georgette Baker agreed to head the Decorative Dollar committee. Ways and Means: It was discussed and agreed by membership that at this time there was not a need for a Ways and

Means committee. New Business: Lynn Ingersoll asked for a volunteer to judge a student art show sponsored by the Rotary. Judging to be done in the

evening of April 14th, please contact Lynn for details. After a short discussion, it was agreed that anyone who had extra surfaces from the fall auction could bring them to

meetings. They can be set out and members could buy them for a donation to the chapter. There will not be a specific meeting, just bring them and set them out.

The Art Center spring show is April 8th and 9th, in downtown Kissimmee. Jean Zawicki will confirm that we can have a

spot at no cost to the chapter. If we have a spot, Barbara Layton will chair a committee for set up and gathering pieces for sale. Barbara has volunteered her tent, tables and displays for the chapter to use. Debbie Smith, Marsha Lamb, Jill Terrell and Miriam McCleese volunteered to help on the committee. The Art Show participation is in addition to our regular April Meeting.
