During this spe- cial season there are many wonderful events that await all of us so that we can enter into a more personal relationship with Christ. Our Lent started off with Mass with Father Jeff on Ash Wednesday. What else can be said about having Mass at St. Patrick’s with other Serrans? For me, Serrans inspire me to continue to work on and deepen my own spirituality. We had our appreciation dinner for seminarians early this month. Although it is intended to be an affirmation event for our seminari- ans, it is also a joyous occasion where our seminarians express their love for all that Serrans do for them and the Church. In mid-March our Archdiocesan Vocation Rally was held at St. Anthony parish for over 300 Catholic school fifth graders. Father John Henderson was beaming as he shared his wonderful campus. We are certainly blessed to have so many consecrated men and women who work hard to put on this event every year. I love seeing the children get excited about vocations and experiencing the joy of Christ in the sisters, brothers, priests, and seminarians. Several Serrans met with Father Henderson and Father Cary (St. Cecilia) to discuss a strategy for chartering a new Serra club in the southwest Portland area. The strategy will be to promote Serra through bulletin announcements and pulpit announcements in tar- geted parishes (St. Cecilia, Our Lady of the Lake, and St. Anthony) in the weeks following Easter. On May 20 at 6:30 St. Cecilia Parish will host a Serra informational meeting. More information will be forthcoming. Mary, Mother of Vocations, Pray for Us! Our Portland Serra Club Annual dinner honoring Portland Archdiocesen seminarians and their families was held Saturday, March 7th at St. Patrick’s Parish. Over 35 Serrans and guests greeted seminarians and their families with a festive Saint Patrick’s day theme. There were over 20 seminarians and several of their family members attending this wonderful event. There was such en-thusiasm and spirituality in the room. The evening started with a social hour which allowed everyone to get acquainted and mingle. This gave many Serrans an opportunity to “catch up” or get to know their “Adopt-a-seminarian”. As you can see from the smiles in the photos (which speak for themselves) - everyone had a great time! There was a delicious buffet dinner and after dining, each seminarian had an opportunity to introduce himself and family members and also share a little about his faith journey. The journeys are varied but the heart-felt calling and joy is evident! We are so proud of and pray for all seminarians and support them in their continued faitih journey!

A Vocation Rally provides an opportunity for sixth grade students to spend a day to learn more about and have interaction with priests, brothers and sisters. All religious communities are invited and many participate. Our Archdioceses 8th Annual Vocations Rallies were held St. Anthony’s in Tigard on Wednesday, March 18 and Queen of Peace in Salem on Thursday, March 19 from 9:00 - 2:00. About 350 students attended St. Anthony’s and 200+ at Queen of Peace. The students started the day with music, games and interaction with Vocations Director, Jeff Eirvin. Then they divide into three groups and attend each of the following: (1) a panel discussion which includes a priest, seminarian and a religious sister; (2) a talk by members of religious orders and (3) lunch. The event concluded with awards for poster contest, etc. It’s a full day of questions and answers and exploration into vocation opportunities!

RECAPS March 4 - Tim Hennessy, President at De La Salle North High School, ex-plained how the school operates. The high school is located in North Portland and was established in 2001 with the purpose of providing a Catholic educa-tion for inner city youngsters at no cost. The students pay no tuition. Every child in the school works one day a week and their pay is used to support the school. The school is open only to those who come from a low level income home. The prospective students take a scholastic test and provide a recommendation from the elementary school they attended. The final decision then rests upon an interview with the student and his/her family. Students are trained the summer before they enter the 9th grade. They are taught clerical skills which allow them to enter the corporate world. Numerous companies take on one or more students and then pay the school. Each day twenty-five per cent of the enrollment are at work. The 9th graders work on Mondays, the 10th graders on Tuesdays, etc. The students must adhere to a dress code. Most of the students enter the school at least one and one-half grades behind. They have four years to attain the level required to enter college. There were 76 students in the first graduat-ing class (2005). The program works! It is now a four year school with over 300 students enrolled. In 2014, 58 out of 74 students earned at least one scholarship to college - 68% of the class. The school is still growing. There is a special need for a modern gymnasium. This would make the physical edu-cation classes more attractive and also provide a home for some of the athletic teams.
