PRESIDENT’S POST

By Corrin Campbell, PA, CFP

PASC President

Dear PASC Members,

2017 will be a year of

change for most Ameri-

cans. For PASC it will be

that and also a year of

Choice!

Your Board of Directors has

enlisted four new, national-

ly recognized presenter

teams to provide our CPE

in 2017. Please look at the Seminar

Schedule and Presenter Information that

follows. We have added new topics and

venues. In September, the Colorado De-

partment of Revenue will present a State

Update in conjunction with the Lakewood

Seminar. We listened to your comments

over the past several years and want to re-

spond to your CPE needs. We look forward

to your seminar participation and feed-

back. Attendee feedback will help us de-

termine which presenters to ask back.

The term “Leadership” is prominent in to-

day’s’ conversations. Bill Gates has said,

“As we look ahead into the next century,

leaders will be those who empower oth-

ers”. PASC has a leadership opportunity

for you. Technical skills are essential to

our accounting practice, but to life,

developing leadership skills is so much

more beneficial! Join PASC’s Board of

Directors and you will learn more of the

inner workings of your Association. You

will make lifelong knowledgeable

friends, meet lobbyist and politicians

that may be helpful in the future; and

have a direct line to the State Board of

Accountancy.

The PASC Board will have several lead-

ership opportunities in June for mem-

bers. We are planning on having a se-

ries of Leadership Training activities for

those members over the next year. (continued on p. 3)

Executive Director’s Report

As PASC enters the new year the

organization is well-positioned.

Over the past year revenue is

down slightly due to lower seminar

attendance but we have largely

offset this by keeping overhead

expenses to a minimum while con-

tinuing to provide the variety of

services that our members expect.

As we begin this year it is important to remember

that the prospects for the 2017 legislative session are

largely unknown. The pundits say that pretty much any-

thing is possible.

The 2016 Seminar Season was our last year with

the National Center for Professional Education. PASC has

selected a variety of different speakers to bring different

courses to you in the 2017 seminar season and the lineup

is included in this newsletter.

PASC held its Annual Convention at the Glen Eyrie

Castle in Colorado Springs in June. The castle was a

beautiful setting to socialize with colleagues and learn.

There were educational presentations including from the

Colorado Department of Revenue and our very own Andy

Morehead. Thank you to everyone who attended. At

press time we are preparing for the 69th Annual Public

Accountants Society of Colorado Convention and banquet

in Loveland, Colorado on June 15 and 16, to coincide with

a two day seminar on Trust/Estate Planning/Farm Topics.

Registration will be open soon. This is your chance to re-

new relationships within the profession and to connect to

other PASC members.

I am a former bank vice president that went into public ac-

counting 25 years ago. I am a CPA and worked for a large local

firm. I recently went into practice for myself. I have been at-

tending PASC updates since 2004 when I first heard Jerry

Riles. The thing I like about the updates is that they are designed

for those who need to know the nuts and bolts of tax return prep-

aration, for the person who actually prepares the returns.

I am a Colorado native and live in the mountains west of

Boulder with my wife and our two Australian Shepherds. I have two grown children

who live in the Boulder area. I am a commercial, multi-engine and instrument rated

pilot. I serve as treasurer of the Colorado Civil Air Patrol Foundation. I am also a

certified SCUBA diver with a shark diving specialty. I am an avid golf and football

fan.

Meet a Member: Rick Skinner, CPA

After owning the Penny Tax Service for the past 40 years, I have finally retired

and sold my practice effective May 1, 2016. I prepared my last return as a paid pre-

parer on April 30, 2016.

I have supported PASC for many years and took full advantage of the CPE each

year by attending the NCPE 2 day seminar for 1040 Updates. I have received all my

CPE Credits thru 12-31-15 from PASC/NCPE.

Even though my tax practice as been located in Phoenix, AZ, my wife, Margaret

and I had our retirement home in Ordway, CO, which is now our “year-round” home.

I will be devoting much of my time doing volunteer work in our local dog shel-

ter assisting in place abused and abandoned dongs into new-quality homes.

My wife, Margaret continues to work as the Director of Social Services in our

local “5 star” rated nursing home.

Retired Member,

Robert Durante

PASC offers well wishes to Robert in his retirement. We offer our thanks for his

membership and support to PASC for the past 10 years. It is members like Robert

that make it possible for PASC to continue to provide CPE courses.

Paying for college is never easy. But the National

Society of Accountants (NSA) Scholarship Foundation

has made it easier by offering scholarships to promis-

ing accounting students across the country. The Foun-

dation awards scholarships to undergraduates who

are U.S. or Canadian citizens enrolled part-time or full-time in a degree program at an accred-

ited two- or four-year college or university in the United States.

Applicants for awards are judged on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership,

and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of

goals and aspirations, and an outside appraisal. They must have a “B” (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or

better grade point average.

Scholarship award amounts range from $500-$2,000, depending on available funding at the

time of the awards.

Last year the NSA Scholarship Foundation awarded 32 scholarships totaling $30,000 to worthy

recipients from across the country.

The National Society of Accountants (NSA) Scholarship Foundation has provided more than $1

million since 1969 to deserving undergraduate and graduate students who are committed to

pursuing a career in accounting, helping to develop more qualified young accountants.

Additional information and scholarship guidelines can be found online at
