Multi-Tier System of Supports (MTSS) The California state budget approved by the Legislature and signed by the Governor has allocated $20 million for a statewide MTSS program. MTSS is an integrated framework that’s been successfully used by a number of schools and districts that integrates evidence based supports within an MTSS framework, focusing on student’s academic, behavioral and social-emotional needs. By coordinating new and existing student supports, MTSS can help increase attendance, prevent dropouts, lower disciplinary rates, improve school climates and boost overall performance. The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) was awarded a grant to lead this project. The investment by the California Department of Education positions OCDE as the lead agency on the California Scale-Up MTSS Statewide Initiative, or SUMS Initiative, which is designed to promote and expand the use of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports statewide. To implement the California SUMS Initiative, OCDE will partner with two educational agencies: Butte County Office of Education and the School Wide Integrated Framework for Transformation (SWIFT) Center, University of Kansas. The Butte County Office of Education will advance statewide communication and enable the sharing of professional learning resources through its Digital Chalkboard, an online access portal. Additionally, Butte staff will engage rural, geographically-isolated county offices of education, districts and schools to support their unique needs. SWIFT will support the project by providing technical assistance to assist OCDE and its partners to establish four tiers of trainers to help school districts and county offices of education scale up their own MTSS programs. At the top will be a state team featuring experts from the California Department of Education, OCDE, Butte County and the SWIFT Center. The second tier will include 11 regional teams based on the Superintendents Regions, which will work with 57 county teams. Numerous local teams will integrate the California SUMS Initiative at the district and school levels.

Student Corner by April Oliver As 2016 comes to an end, I would first like to extend a thank you to Char Boshart, M.A. CCC-SLP for giving a very engaging and interactive presentation on remediation of articulation. The resources and visual aids provided were amazing and helped teach us new therapeutic strategies. During the workshop, we had a total of 15 SJSU students attend, which is amazing! I hope we can increase the number of students for our Winter 2017 workshop. Attending these workshops is a great way to connect students and professionals in Santa Clara County and to build lasting relationships. To stay connected and to receive updates about the workshop, please “like” and “follow” our Facebook page! http://www.facebook.com/sccsha I would also like to thank the SCCSHA board members for volunteering to speak to SJSU CD&S students about life after graduate school. Hearing stories and having questions answered by SLPs currently working in the field is invaluable, and the student body as a whole cannot thank you enough. Finally, I would like to inform all students that the Jan Wilkerson Memorial SCCSHA Student Scholarship is now open for all graduate level students in the field of Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology! The scholarship is in the amount of $500 and will be paid directly to the student’s college for tuition fees. To learn more and complete an online application, visit the SCCSHA website at: http://www.sccsha.org/scholarship.html Wishing everyone the best during this holiday season, I look forward to seeing you all at the Winter 2017 workshop about integrating music therapy with speech and language therapy.

You'll even have the opportunity to create countless posters and activity sheets to use in classrooms or individual therapy sessions that illustrate songs with speech and language goals. Come for a practical seminar filled with immediately usable tools!
