INTRODUCTIONRapid Prototyping (RP) can be defined as a group of techniques usedto quickly fabricate a scale model of a part or assembly using three-dimensional computer aided design (CAD) data.

The word "rapid" is relative: construction of a model withcontemporary methods can take from several hours to several days, depending on the method used and the size and complexity of themodel.

Why Rapid Prototyping? The reasons of Rapid Prototyping areTo increase effective communication.

    To decrease development time.

    To decrease costly mistakes.

    To minimize sustaining engineering changes.

To extend product lifetime by adding necessary features andeliminating redundant features early in the design

Methodology of Rapid Prototyping A cad model is constructed and then converted to STL format.

The RP device processes the STL file y creating sliced layers ofthe model. The resolution of future model directly depends onquantity of the layers or, since all layers must have identicalthickness , on the layer’s thickness.

    The first layer of physical model is created , the model is thenlowered by the one layer thickness ,and the process is repeateduntil completion of the model;

The model and supports are removed the surface of the model is

    then finished and cleaned.

Advantages of Rapid PrototypingHelps you to build a better product.

Often, helps you build a less expensive product.

    Facilitates client and team involvement.

Focuses on the learner and usability

Limitation of Rapid Prototyping Scalability for large product

Lacks specificity: defining what’s on every screen.

    Lacks clear sign-off points.

“Iterativeness” or How do you know when you’redone?

Future Developments Rapid prototyping is starting to change the way companies designand build products

By using faster computers, more complex control systems, andimproved materials, RP manufacturers are dramatically reducing

    build time.

By using faster computers, more complex control systems, andimproved materials, RP manufacturers are dramatically reducing

    build time.

One future application is Distance Manufacturing on Demand, acombination of RP and the Internet that will allow designers toremotely submit designs for immediate manufacture.

Conclusion Finally, the rise of rapid prototyping has spurred

progress in traditional subtractive methods as well.

Advances in computerized path planning, numeric andaccuracy of machining. Rapid control, and machinedynamics are increasing the speed prototyping willnot make machining obsolete, but rather complement

    it.
