THE OLYMPIC GAMESbelieved that the games would promote world

The Olympic symbols are icons, flags and symbols used by the International Olympic Committee to promote the Olympic Games. Some - such as the flame, fanfare, and theme - are more common during Olympic competition, but others, such as the flag, can be seen throughout the year.

•The medals are awarded to the athletes or to the teams who come first, second and third, at each of the events.

•A gold-plated silver medal is awarded to the first athlete, commonly called ‘gold medal’. The second athletes are awarded a silver medal and the third places are given the brass medals.

•The silver of the medals is of at least 92.5% clear silver. The first medals are at least six grams gold plated.

India first participated in Olympics in 1900 in Paris. The country was represented by Norman Pritchard, an Anglo Indian who was holidaying in Paris during that time. He bagged two silver medals in 200m. dash and 200m hurdles. Then after a gap of 20 years India again participated with two athletes in 1920 Antwerp Olympics and with eight members in 1924 Paris Olympics.
