MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

Term 1 had been an amazing start for us at KMBC. During this term, the children were exposed to the theme ‘All About Me’, where they learnt about their immediate surroundings such as themselves and their friends in school.

The children also were given the opportunities to be engaged in a variety of activities and events, both indoors and outdoors. We had our Tea Session, Chinese New Year celebration and the launch of Nature Magnified programme at Singapore Botanic Gardens, just to name a few. Do check out the photos that were taken during these events in the next few pages of this newsletter.

With this, I would also like to extend my appreciation to our dear parents who have constantly giving us your never ending support. I look forward to having more parental involvement activities in the near future.

On 27 Jan, KMBC held our annual tea session event. Parents were updated about the changes in the curriculum. The PSG members also took the opportunity to be present and shared their experiences collaborating with the school and recruited

new members. Teachers from different levels had mock-up lessons for the parents. The infants were also not forgotten. They made cheesecake!

We ended the event with good food and new memories to cherish.

We had our Chinese New Year celebration and parents were

invited to join in the celebration as well. Children performed dance performances and played games with their parents. Tokens of appreciation were given to the children for the immense effort towards the celebration. Thank

you parents for your participation and the potluck

contribution too!

Our little infants were also excited to

be a part of the celebration. They got

to show off their traditional Chinese

costumes and participated in

making a dog mask.

The launch of the Nature Magnified programme at the Singapore Botanic

Gardens was a blast. K1 and K2 children from different centres attended the

mass launch where they were tasked to complete an Amazing Race. All the

children enjoyed doing nature related activities under the sun.

On 7 March, the Malay children from K1 and K2 classes had their learning journey to Taman

Warisan. The children visited 3 exhibitions there where the children learnt about the different

spices, the history of the Malay-Bugis community and the Malay culture.

Food textures:

As you cook, keep your young child nearby to use her senses to look at, feel, smell, and even taste (when appropriate) the food during the process of preparation. Use running commentary to describe the various shapes, colors, textures and smells to build important vocabulary with statements like: “This dough is so smooth—and look how we can stretch it!” “Let’s see what vanilla smells like!” “The spinach is bright green.” These experiences help children build language and learn to describe properties.

Making music:

Rummaging through cabinets and low drawers is usually the first order of business for very young children when they are in the kitchen. Of course you’ve made these spaces safe by removing anything of danger, but don’t remove the truly interesting pots, pans and dull wooden and plastic utensils. What kinds of sounds can children make with different materials? Is there a difference between using a wooden spoon to hit the pot and using a rubber spatula to hit it? Exploring the properties of different materials is very important for children. Remember, your role as the parent is to encourage this “music” and to model curiosity. Encourage your child by saying things like: “Those are some interesting sounds you’re making!” “I wonder if the sound will change when we use this spoon.” “Let’s listen to hear if the sound changes when you tap the pot lightly like this.” All of this conversation invites children into learning about the physics of sound.

Descriptive language:

Describe the things you see by colour, shape, size, smell, etc. “Grapefruits and oranges are both round, but they are different. The grapefruits are yellow and bigger than the oranges.” Or, “Lemons and grapefruit are both yellow, but the lemons aren’t really round and are so much smaller.” Encourage your child to consider weight as well: “Which do you think is heavier—the lime or the potato? Let’s compare!”

Names of various foods and their packaging:

There are names for all of the things you’ll find at the market: the different kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and fish, etc. How the foods are packaged can lead to later understanding of why certain materials benefit from certain kinds of packaging: “Here are cans of corn. Remember that we saw corn with the fresh fruits and vegetables? That wasn’t in a can. I wonder why sometimes corn is in a can and sometimes it isn’t?”

Overeating and Overweight Infants and Toddlers: Prevention

The main cause for excess weight is overeating. Overeating means consuming more calories each day than are needed for normal activity and growth. Overeating is mainly a bad habit and it's learned during the early years of life.

Only feed for hunger. Help your child recognize hunger and only to eat when he's hungry.

Avoid any grazing. Grazing is eating at frequent intervals instead of waiting until he is hungry. Try to teach your child to stop eating when she feels full. Overfeeding teaches a child to overeat. Do not insist that your child finish a jar of baby food or clean his plate. Avoid tote bottles. Don't allow your child to keep a bottle or sippy cup with her during the day or night. Children who are allowed to carry a bottle around with them learn to use food for comforting and also damage their tooth enamel. Avoid giving children bottles, sippy cups, or other snacks while they are in car seats or strollers (using food for distraction). Use praise and physical affection instead of food as a reward for good behaviour.
