Preparing the Next Steps in Human Space Exploration
Pierre Jean Director, Space Exploration Strategic Planning
Canadian Space Agency
Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute Webinar
Outline
• Canada and the International Space Station • Global Exploration Roadmap • Cislunar and Lunar Exploration: the Deep Space Gateway • Preparing Canada’s potential contributions to Deep
Space Exploration
The International Space Exploration Coordination Group and the Global Exploration Roadmap
The Global Exploration Roadmap provides a coordinated vision for human space exploration while recognizing the criticality of increasing synergy with robotic missions 15 space agencies representing: Australia, Canada, China, European Space Agency, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Russia, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States Two revisions of the GER have already been produced to describe the global efforts to realize human and robotic missions GER3 will be released in January 2018 in support of the second intergovernmental International Space Exploration Forum to be held in Japan on March 3, 2018
• Deep Space Gateway provides ability to support multiple NASA, commercial, and international partner objectives in Phase 1 and beyond
• The Gateway is designed for deep space environments • Supports (with Orion docked) crew of 4 for total mission up to 42 days • Supports buildup of the Deep Space Transport • Open trade for compatibility for operations in Low Lunar Orbit
• Emphasis on defining early Phase 1 elements • Gateway Power Propulsion Element • Gateway Habitat • Robotic Arm • Logistics Strategy
• Future work to refine later elements; early feasibility trades complete • Airlock • Deep Space Transport

Preparing for deep space exploration
• Space has inspired generations of Canadians and is now part of the mainstream economy, media and culture, branding Canada as a nation of explorers and innovators
• The ISS was a successful model for international cooperation in human exploration• International partners have established Moon and Mars as their next destinations for human
flight• Being a timely contributor to space endeavours will be essential to maintaining space
expertise and industry capacity in Canada• Canada is preparing to contribute critical, innovative and visible elements to the next chapter
in human exploration beyond the ISS• Multiple Destinations – Multiple Applications
• While continuing its critical role in ISS operations and doing science on the station, Canada hasstarted defining options for future contributions beyond Low Earth Orbit
• These contributions will be visible, critical, scalable, showcase Canadian innovation, provideflights for our astronauts, bring tangible terrestrial benefits and inspire Canadians
