Following investment approval for THOR 7, Telenor Satellite Broadcasting (TSBc) has been working hard to complete the design and selection process for both the satellite manufacturer and the launcher. The satellite, which will include both Ku- and Ka-band payloads, will be used to provide additional capacity for the distribution of broadcast services in Central and Eastern Europe, and will also allow us to extend our coverage to deliver data-communication services in areas including the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean.
Since 1997, when its first satellite – Thor II – was successfully launched, TSBc has delivered quality satellite communications for both broadcast and data services.
1° West has developed into a “hotspot” orbital location, serving nearly 17 million cable and satellite households throughout Europe. The new satellite will provide much-needed growth capacity for TV services – specifically in Central and Eastern Europe, where HDTV is fast becoming accepted and 3DTV will play a key role in the future.

Communications anytime and anywhere have created a need for satellite services at sea to match the reliability of terrestrial access on land. For this reason, TSBc has taken note of requirements within the maritime industry and is responding to the challenge of finding innovative ways to provide capacity that is cost-efficient and that delivers seamless communications at sea. The new Ka-band payload will be designed specifically for maritime use and will enhance TSBc’s strong position throughout Europe.
TSBc’s new satellite will join the THOR satellite fleet at 1° West, which comprises THOR 5 and THOR 6. The contract award for the satellite manufacturer is expected to be announced in June 2011 and the satellite launcher will be selected soon after.

In association with Broadband TV News, Telenor Satellite Broadcasting (TSBc) hosted in Serbia its second Digital TV breakfast event, which was also its first event for 2011. Attracting more than 120 registrations including local and regional press, the event gathered leading figures from the broadcast-television sector and proved to be a huge success, confirming that the provision of broadcast services remains highly relevant in this growing market.
Serbia is rapidly developing into one of the most dynamic TV markets in south-east Europe. Its cable industry is dominated by Serbia Broadband (SBB), which also operates one of the two direct-to-home platforms in the country. Digi Sat, the other platform – which broadcasts from 1° West – is still in its early stages but is building a healthy subscriber base. In addition, Serbia aims to complete the switchover to digital-terrestrial broadcasting on April 4, 2012.

In the final quarter of 2010, TSBc contracted independent research agency TNS Gallup to carry out its annual customer-satisfaction survey. TNS Gallup gathered research from our customers via an online questionnaire, providing invaluable feedback on how we have performed over the past year and where we can make improvements to our services. TSBc attained an overall score of 90 – putting it among the top 10% in Europe, alongside companies benchmarked worldwide for customer satisfaction over the last three years.

DatacommsHosted on TSBc’s iDirect platform located at Nittedal, TSBc will provide uplink services within its European footprint, while NewWave Broadband will manage and deliver VSAT satellite services for the maritime industry for ShipEquip, the maritime broadband provider that serves ships and other vessels in the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea and the Baltic Sea.
This agreement further strengthens TSBc’s position in the Northern European market which is seeing continued demand for high bandwidth from the maritime sector. Ships’ crews in general, and young seaman going into shipping in particular, are accustomed to using the internet, email and social media to do their jobs and handle their personal lives. They will consistently choose employers with ships that are connected through high-speed satellite communications.
The high-powered capacity at 1°West provides increased coverage in a key region, facilitating growing bandwidth demand through Europe’s busiest shipping lanes.

With the recent approval of THOR 7, TSBc is able to offer our customers a future growth path at 1°West, providing additional capacity to support the increased types of data-communications services that are being demanded, specifically by the maritime industry.
At this year’s Satellite 2011 conference and exhibition, Jan Hetland, TSBc’s CTO for Datacomms solutions, presented TSBc’s position and plans associated with the Ka-band payload that is being designed for THOR 7.
“By establishing a prime maritime position delivering Ka-band capacity on THOR 7 and pricing the service attractively, TSBc can satisfy growing data-transmission requirements,” said Jan Hetland. “Demand and growth for data transmissions continues to soar within the maritime industry. It is now seen as a prerequisite to communicate the same way at sea as on land, and this is driving bandwidth requirements.”
TSBc has a long tradition at 1°West for maritime VSAT data-transmission services. Delivering high-powered Northern European capacity to the main maritime and mobile satellite-communication service providers, which operate in the world’s busiest shipping lanes, TSBc will be able to offer Ku-band capacity for continuity of service alongside the Ka-band development for Northern shipping areas.
The Ka band, which will ensure supply of much-needed capacity to satisfy a growing market, presents some

additional technical challenges related to rain fade. But TSBc has adopted a conservative approach that aims to deliver essentially the same service availability as its current Ku-band services. In fact, the benefits of lower service costs and higher bit-rates far outweigh these challenges.
The next steps for TSBc are to evaluate our compatibility with other networks, develop the platform and seek roaming opportunities “We are a regional player in a growing market”, said Jan Hetland “1° West provides excellent coverage for high-traffic areas and TSBc is well placed to offer high-value regional contribution to a global network”.

3DTV begins to take off
Six months after the first major European 3DTV service launches, where the likes of UK operators BSkyB and Virgin Media, France’s Canal Plus and Germany’s Sky Deutschland led the pack of pay-TV innovators, it is fair to say that the third dimension of television has made steady, if unspectacular, progress.
Those that are serious about pushing the technology are doing the right things – investing in 3D production of popular sports content and supplementing this with other attractive programming, such as movies and documentaries.
But, as with the early days of HDTV six or seven years ago, the need for substantial amounts of content is paramount. There are big challenges here because, unlike the shift from standard definition to HD, it is not just a case of swapping one kind of camera for another. Changes that must also be made to outside-broadcast vans, rigs and other equipment are more complex (and expensive) than was the case with the move to HDTV.
Such investments will increasingly be made, though. In the meantime, the increasing availability of 3DTV will continue to give the technology the momentum it needs to gain mass-market appeal. Indeed, at least some kind of 3DTV service is available in most advanced-television markets now. In recent weeks the major Nordic operators have started to do their bit, with Telenor’s Canal Digital and Modern Times Group’s Viasat both stepping up their 3D sports coverage.
by Ted Hall, Senior TV analyst, Informa Telecoms & Media
Pay-TV operators that are looking for signs of early momentum will be buoyed by the early indicators from BSkyB – its service is already being taken by 70,000 homes, half of all UK homes with 3DTV sets.
Interest in 3DTV will also be driven by devices other than television sets. Hardware such as 3D Blu-ray players and Sony’s 3D-ready PlayStation 3 will boost the market, as will new mobile devices that can offer 3D video images without glasses – the launch of Nintendo’s new 3DS handheld games console this month could provide a catalyst that could get people of all generations interested in 3D entertainment.
