Dear ParentsWe are now enjoying the run up to the Christmas holidays. Anyone who fails to appreciate the sense of excitement, anticipation and energy within a school at this time of the year, should not be in teaching. Despite the fact that all are tired, the desire of the children to immerse themselves wholeheartedly in the atmosphere and extensive range of events is palpable. I hope that parents, too, will be able to join us and, so that all is clear, I include the details of the 'Christmas Clarion' sent to you on Wednesday.

In order to allow you to plan ahead, I write to summarise the seasonal events planned for the run up to the end of term, to which you are warmly invited.

Friday 27 November at 14.00 in the College ChapelAdvent Carol Service at Chapel: Chapel and Chamber Choirs will perform and two of the items are accompanied by the Music Scholar Group. Members of the Music Scholar Group are reminded to bring their instruments/music.

Sunday 29 November from 15.30 Montpellier Christmas FairChamber Choir Performances to take place outside L'una in the Courtyard, from 15.30 and outside the Montpellier Wine Bar from 16.15.

Tuesday 1 December at 14.30 in the Assembly HallYears 1 and 2 present their Nativity Performance with refreshments afterwards in the Dining Hall. Kookaburra Club and tea will be in place asusual but there will be no after school activities for Kingfishers children.

Wednesday 2 December at 14.30 in the Assembly HallCottage and Reception present their Nativity Performance with refreshments afterwards in the Assembly Hall foyer. Children can be collected immediately after the event and normal supervision and tea will be in place. After school activities as normal.

There will be refreshments afterwards in Kingfishers and Lower School. Kingfishers and Lower School children can be collected immediately after the service, Years 5-8 return to lessons. Normal supervision, prep and tea will be in place.

Tuesday 8 December at 14.00 at the The Exmouth Arms, Bath RoadKingfishers Reception to Year 2 Choir will sing carols for about 30 minutes before returning to School. Children can be collected immediately after the carols, but must be signed out by the class teacher. This event is weather dependent and in the case of wet weather, parents should contact Reception.

Orchestra to perform and accompany so should remember their instruments.

Friday 11 December at 16.00 in the College ChapelOur end of term Carol Service for Years 3-8 and their parents will take place. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Dining Hall. Term ends after this event and there will be no after school supervision or tea. Chamber and Junior Choirs are due to perform, and two of the items are accompanied by the Music Scholar Group who should remember their instruments/music.

Tomorrow will see our inaugural Academic Olympiad, an extension of the House competition and one which is based on the classroom rather than on a co-curricular activity. I have every confidence that this event will offer different children the chance to enjoy the limelight when representing their House.

Kingfishers Need Puddle Suits!Although we are now well into winter weather, our Kingfisher boys and girls still love their playtimes. So that they can continue to enjoy their play, please can parents ensure that they have a named puddle suit, coat, hat and gloves in school, at all times.

Don't miss out - book the Years 5-8 Ski Trip now!

During the Easter holidays, Years 5-8 Prep pupils will have the chance to jet off to Ponte di Legno in Italy for a week of fun in the snow! Don't miss out on this fabulous opportunity for your child to travel in Europe and develop adventure sporting skills.

Flying out to the Italian slopes, and staying at the 4* Hotel Mirella, Ponte di Legno, pupils will have the chance to learn new or develop existing skiing skills. In addition, we'll be making the most of the resort's swimming pool, enjoying a movie night and a pizza night - amongst various other entertainment.

Kingfishers

This week the children in Year 1 have thoroughly enjoyed sharing their family trees with each other. Our topic at the moment is A Royal Celebration so we have been looking at Queen Victoria’s family tree in particular, and the children were given the task of creating their own at home.

Kingfishers are buzzing with Christmas songs as the children have been practising hard for their Nativity. They have been singing, dancing and retuning their alien moves ready for the performances. Everyone is very excited! The Hall will take time to set up so doors will open at 14.00 on Wednesday and Thursday.

This week we have been thinking of many fun ways to practise spellings; all of them could be tried at home. Here are Kingfishers’ top ten suggestions:1. Writing in the bath with water crayons2. Shaving foam3. Drawing in dry lentils4. Tracing in sand5. Post it notes around the house6. Chalking outside7. Creating spelling games8. Making our own word searches9. Icing the words on biscuits and eating

them!10. Writing them in the air or with a ribbon

Lower School

Year 4 have been learning about Friction this week.

They have designed their own investigation to see how different materials

affect the movement of objects.

It was quite a sight to see them performing the

conga around Lower School singing the Friction Song!

Lower School have been exploring exotic lands this week. The Year 4s were in India (more of that next week) whilst Year 3 travelled back in time to Ancient Egypt, where they learnt about Egyptian maths, mummification and writing. Surprisingly, the Ancient Egyptians were very artistic and their temples, tombs and palaces were covered in hieroglyphs and paintings. The children used their knowledge of hieroglyphs to write their names on papyrus and these were then turned into bookmarks. They also made death masks and mummified some very ill looking peg dolls, using real linen to wrap them up. The children all participated well in the activities and enjoyed the various tasks.

It was really nice to have last year's Scholars talk to us about what it's like when you get to College after a scholarship, what to revise in paticular, which exam is the hardest and which is the easiest and so on. It was great to know that if we needed to talk to someone who had already done the exam, or had any specific questions, we could get in touch with any of these Year 9 Scholars and they could help us.

On the 24 November the Deputy Head of College came in to our Assembly to give us some advice about being a teenager. He also talked about how we use our brain when making decisions. Overall, Mr Dawson brought lots of humour and information and every member of Upper School was interested and intruiged. "

"Creative Ballet

The Kingfishers Creative Ballet group have been following the story of The Nutcracker

this Half Term. Inspired by the story, we held a colouring competition and this wonderful

colouring was produced by Emily Faulkner. Well done Emily, and all the Nutcracker dancers!


ArtArt Enthusiasts, Monday with Upper School

The Art Enthusiasts have been experimenting with felting, by making a Robin picture. First they drew their designs, then they got started with the felt. The outcome was very effective! Here, our artists explain the process:

“On a piece of ‘pre-felt’ we sketched an outline using wisps of black wool.”

“Using a barbed needle, we pushed the wool into the felt which is supported by a piece of thick foam.”

“After, we layered red and orange yarn on top of each other and poked them over and over again, to make the robin's breast look fat.”

“We then took different wools (reds, pinks, oranges, browns and greys) to make a feathery and life-like effect.”

“Although there is no sewing, you do use a barbed needle. But beware: they are sharp and they are easy to break!”

“Felting, though fiddly, is a great project for anyone!”

“Next, I am going to create a 3D wing. It is very relaxing and fun!”

A Musical Note

You are invited to a Christmas Concert on

Monday 7 December at 18.30!

Various groups will be performing: Chapel Choir,

Orchestra, Jazz Band, String Group (Senior and

LS), String Quartet, Wind Band, Brass Group and

Percussion Group. Everyone is welcome and

encouraged to attend, particularly pupils and

parents who are not currently associated with these

musical groups, so that they can get a flavour of

the musical life of The Prep. It is the perfect way to

start the festive season - come and join us in the

Assembly Hall!


Letter from the Library

Come to the library and tell me what books you would like for Christmas!

Popular choices at the moment seem to be Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney and Girl Online by Zoe Sugg.

Not only will it get you thinking about what to ask for in your stocking but I can also use your ideas to stock the library.

I am aware that lots of us have bookshelves full of once read books at home and so I will be running a book swap in January where pupils can exchange books (more details next term!). But I am always happy to accept any used books that are in good condition for use in school or resale for our charity, Gloucestershire Bundles. Any Enid Blyton books would be gratefully accepted at the moment!

A Poem by Bella Isaachsen, The Prep Poet Laureate In Assembly last Monday Mr Whybrow congratulated our two recently appointed Poet Laureates (Isabella Isaachsen and Holly Ellis) and gave them their first task: to write a poem linked to the recent tragedy in Paris. Isabella took up the mantle without hesitation, and crafted this moving tribute to the terrible event:

Pray for Paris,A dreadful crime occurred,A crime against us, leaving Paris disturbed,They were told that the right way was to give up their life,To put other people into eye-opening strife,There but for the grace of God go I.

Girls' SportsTeam of the Week – U11A

The U11As got off to a great start against Berkhampstead, putting their own ‘no more than 4 touches on the ball’ rule to good use, creating a fast game. There were some fantastic long balls hit down the wings, which were gathered cleanly and driven into the opposing D. Unfortunately we didn’t always convert the pressure into points, but managed to finish the first half 2-1 up. The second half continued in the same vein, with The Prep forcing their way up the pitch; however, now Berkhampstead were piling on their own pressure in our D. Thankfully our back 3 held strong through some great communication and scramble defence and, with a final goal before full time, we cemented the win 3-1.

Severnside Tournament

The Severnside Tournament this week showed just how far the 1st team has come since the start of the season. We had a tough group and first up was Wycliffe. We had suffered a heavy defeat by Wycliffe in the first game of the season so we definitely had a score to settle, and that we did. With a clinical finish, we achieved a 1-0 victory. Next up was Beaudesert and we lost two goals in the final two minutes of the game, but immediately bounced back from that to beat St John's 2-0. This meant that we finished 2nd in our group and qualified for the semi final where we met local rivals Dean Close. Another score to settle here and the game was a tense affair from the start, finishing in a goal-less draw. This took us into golden goal extra time period, where the girls did a fantastic job to hold their nerve and, still equal at the end of this we went to penalty shuttles. Nine penalties were taken by both teams and there was still nothing to separate the teams. Our goalie had really risen to the occasion and made some outstanding saves under huge pressure. Finally, in the fourth round of penalties, our goalie made yet another save, and our captain stepped up to slot home the winner. The team was elated: we were in the final! The final was end to end against the Downs Wraxall and, about mid way through the game, we lost a goal. Knowing we had to score, we dug deep, and although two shots went screaming just past the post in the dying minutes, it was not to be. We finished runners-up and very proud of our performance and progress.

Swimming and Cross Country

House Cross Country

The House Cross-Country races will take place on Monday during games time. Children must run wearing their coloured House shirt. The sports team photos will also be taken at this time so in addition to their House top, children must also have their games kit. During each games session, the boys' race will be run first while the girls are having their photo taken and then they will swap over.

Swimming Gala v Clifton High School

What a season our swimmers are having! Another gala victory last week, this time for our Year 4,5 and 6 boys and girls. It was the first time we have ever swum against Clifton High School and it was clear right from the start that it was going to be closely contested, with many of the races almost impossible to call. The result went in our favour though, Cheltenham 136 and Clifton High 122. Well done everyone!

Good luck to all our swimmers in the final galas of 2015 against Dean Close and Beaudesert.


Cheltonian Association & Society Christmas FairSunday 22 November

Last week's Christmas Fair was another great day of shopping and festivities, this year supporting LINC. Thank you to all attendees, stallholders and, of course Savills, who sponsored the event. Over 1,000 visitors attended, and exhibitors Bodega, The Real Boar Company, Wicket Ideas, East Africa Trading and Armadillo Jewellery all gave over £100 as their 10% donation.
