We are delighted to be participating in two forthcoming Art Exhibitions!

Our Year 5 pupils who participated in the Prep School Print Workshop back in February will be exhibiting alongside print professionals and senior school pupils at The White Gallery in Thirlestaine Long Gallery from 13 - 23 March. A private viewing is being held at 17.00 this Friday - Everyone is Welcome!

The National SATIPS Art Exhibition will be held at St Ronans’ School in Kent for the second year running. Carefully selected work from Middle and Upper School has been sent to St Ronan's for display from 25 April 2015.

Pupils with work selected for display are Clova, Benjamin, Zac, George, Finn, Maja, Freya, Nastya, Isobelle, Ed, Jamie, Lily, Jasper, Charlie and Max from Year 5 with their Lino Print Birds; Laura from Year 6 with her Playing Cards and Sphere’s in pencil and ink; Isabella, Charles, Francesca and Victoria from Year 7 with their Ceramic Gaudi Houses and Jenny from Year 8 with her Acrylic Oak Tree.

Mrs A V Parsley, Art TutorJoseph in Year 5 will have work displayed at the Wilson Gallery in Cheltenham in the forthcoming weeks.



Headmaster’s WelcomeDear Parents

My observations this week relate to the behaviour of parents. Match tea is a time when the culture of a school, and the respect shown to it by parents, can be keenly observed.

Are the simple but necessary rules concerning match tea supported? Are visiting parents welcomed appropriately? Do parents demonstrate the manners, which they hope are being taught to their children?

At Cheltenham Prep, I am delighted to state that the answer to all of these questions is a resounding ’yes’! As a member of staff who travels away regularly with a team, I can also say that this is most certainly not the case in some other schools. I have been pushed out of the way in an unseemly rush for a bacon roll. I have picked through the crumbs of the remnants of a match tea after a swarm of children were allowed by their parents to behave like locusts prior to the arrival of visiting parents. I have offered sandwiches whilst the ‘home team’ tucked in. So thank you everyone for not only your support and sportsmanlike

behaviour on the touchline, but also for the standards of behaviour and hospitality at match tea.

Below are my weekly reminders of the arrangements for September. To these I would add an explanation as to why I have asked two fathers not to take their children to international rugby matches this weekend. If I had given permission, the integrity of the House matches taking place would have been undermined, as difficult precedents would have been set. And so to September; what reminders are appropriate?

1. Lower School (Years 3 and 4) do not have to attend Saturday School. However, we do hope that the events planned for Saturdays will attract as many as possible.

2. Although Middle School (Years 5 and 6) will have no academic lessons, attendance at Saturday morning fixtures and House events remains obligatory.

3. Saturday School remains obligatory for Upper School (Years 7 and 8).

These new arrangements are designed to retain the integrity of the Saturday offer, whilst allowing families time to indulge in their own interests and remove the aforementioned clashes.

Continuing the theme of briefing parents on the new arrangements in place for September, these are the collection times in Kingfishers and Lower School.

Kingfishers

For maximum flexibility of collection arrangements, there are several points of pick up for children at the end of the day in Kingfishers:

Kingfishers This term, Year 1's topic is 'Welcome to the Jungle'. The children have been learning all about Rainforests, including the weather, their locations on a world map, and the different types of animals that live there. In Science, we have also been learning about animals and their habitats.

As part of these topic activities, Year 1 visited the Cotswolds Wildlife Park. We explored the different areas, seeing Safari animals and Rainforest animals, birds, and many more. We were given a fantastic talk about animals and their habitats, and learnt lots of facts about the penguins, meer cats, prarie dogs and squirrel monkeys:

"Did you know that penguins are black and white to camouflage with the sea? When swimming they look dark from above and light from under the sea." Monty

"The meer cats stand on their back legs and they look very serious!" Max

After lunch, the children enjoyed the Wildlife Adventure Playground, where they copied the monkeys, climbing and swinging on the bars.

Our Year 1 children had a great day, whilst learning about a variety of animals and their habitats.

KingfishersThis week, Year 2 have been looking at Fantasy Tales and have read three stories about George and a dragon. First of all we read The Dragon Machine, followed by the legend of St George and The Dragon, ending with a story about a dragon who was afraid of a mouse called George!

We looked in particular at similes used in each story, coming up with our own to describe a character. We thought we were as clever as foxes!

We also painted our own dragons, ready to write some super similes about them too!

Lower SchoolYear 4 Enrichment lessons have been hugely popular this term. The children had a simple brief - to sell cakes to raise money for TURF at the Bath Road Market

Following discussions, each class decided on 2 types of cakes their class would like to make with Mrs Upton. Mr Isaachsen then used his ICT lessons to work out the cost of ingredients and the class agreed an amount to charge, ensuring sufficient profit.

Mrs Isaachsen looked at marketing and the children decided who they needed to write to and how they could best promote their cakes.

There was such a sense of purpose during the lessons and many children did extra work at home. 4A decided to make loom bands, to give away with the more expensive cakes, and Emily baked and packaged her own dog biscuits, which sold out on the day!

Learning skills like these are so important and play an important part of our Enrichment programme. The children managed to raise £300 on the day and have even been offered a stall, for free, at the market any time!

My thanks also goes to our very supportive parents, who provided cakes and then bought some too! A great team effort.

Middle School Middle School Maths Challenge

We had such a wonderful group of Maths Whizz Kids who took part in the Middle School Maths Challenge at Cheltenham College this week!

With Year 5 and 6 competing against teams from other schools, our children had their brain muscles well and truly exercised.

In teams of four, we worked through a number of different rounds, including a shuttle round, logic puzzles, cross numbers and relay.

Not only did we all show marvellous determination and perseverance, but our children were excellent ambassadors for the school. They displayed impecable manners, superb behaviour and hearty appetites for cakes and sandwiches at the tea afterwards. Both teams did wonderfully well in their approach to all the

challenges, with one of our teams coming runners up in the Year 5 section. Well done to all our Maths Whizz Kids.

Middle and Upper School Year 5 Latin: Roman writing and mosaic making.

This week in Latin we designed mosaics and learned about the type of writing the Romans used. We then used coloured tiles and grids to make mosaics. We also used pens and card to practise our Roman writing and wrote some letters and cards.

Upper School Assembly: “The Use and Misuse of Animals in Art”

Thursday’s Upper School assembly focussed on looking at animals and people depicted in Art. Mr Evans, Deputy Head of Sixth Form at College visited us, and talked to Upper School about how animals can be used in Art to convey lots of meanings and be interpreted using different methods.

“Mr Evans taught us how to read the meaning in art more clearly.” Denis Year 7

Mr Evans spoke to us about all sorts of types of paintings; from depictions of horses and dogs, to the “hidden” messages contained in paintings, which we can discover on closer inspection. The presentation covered a range of paintings, from Cupid and Venus through to how people treat their pets to King Charles’ I horse…

This was the first in a forthcoming series of assemblies led by College staff on a variety of subjects. I very much hope Upper School pupils will enjoy hearing different speakers on a multitude of subjects, and I thank my colleagues at College for giving up their time to visit us.

Short matches require goals to be scored from centre passes from the start and any lost possession gives opportunities for the opposition to pull ahead. The girls showed feisty play coming from behind to win matches and pulling games back to draw leaving their best netball to their last match. Although the defence worked hard to gain many interceptions and overturn possession, the U11’s were unable to make the most of this and convert it to much needed goals. Injury and illness prevented them playing at full strength but they must be congratulated for their commitment and hard work.

U13 IAPS – Friday 6 March

A beautiful day at Millfield helped to showcase the U13s playing at their very best in the IAPS U13 Regional Tournament. They played together as a tight knit unit all morning and demonstrated real skill in attack and defence. They were unbeaten and won their group at the end of this part of the day with scores as follows:

v. St John’s on the Hill 12-1 win

v. Wycliffe 6-6 draw

v. Perrott Hill 8-5 win

v. Prior Park 9-3 win

v. All Hallows 8-4 win

v. King’s Hall 4-4 draw

These successes meant an automatic place in the semi final and a rest for our girls while other teams had to battle it out in the quarters. The girls knew that they would have to meet the winner of The Down’s v Prior Park and watched eagerly to see which of these old foes would be victorious. At this stage the ‘golden goal’ rule comes into play if the game is tied at full time, and this game went on past the hooter with The Down’s taking the game. Nerves were definitely evident in the first few minutes and we were 0-2 down when increased determination and commitment were needed along with ‘full limpet’ style defence. The girls then got into their stride and pulled back with the score at 3-3 at full time but with the ball in our possession. A nerve wracking few passes later we had shots at goal which, agonisingly, did not quite hit the target. The ball went away from us and The Down’s scored to take a place in the national finals. Unsurprisingly the team was devastated, but most impressive was the fact that after less than a minute the girls were boosting each other and reminding themselves about the incredible skill they had shown all day. They should feel very proud of the team spirit they showed and their achievements, which should spur them on to a great last few games.

Girls’ Sporting AchievementsHOCKEY V CITY OF LONDON FREEMAN’S SCHOOL TOURING TEAM

What a great win against CLFS and a brilliant way to really end our season. Waking up early to get to school by 10am on a Sunday was not a highlight of the day but everyone made it and after a quick warm up we were all raring to go. Although some players were still in netball mode we managed to score a quick goal in the first five minutes to put us ahead early. This lifted our spirits and by the end of the first half we were 3-0 up. Because we were playing 11 aside for the first time since our trip to Holland, we did get quite tired but we kept pushing and won by a convincing 6-0. It was a great morning and good to play hockey again.

Y6 MIXED HOCKEY / NETBALL TOUR TO GUERNSEYReport by Miss Ramsay

Last weekend, 30 boys and girls in Year 6 had a very early start as we headed off to Guernsey for the annual hockey and netball tour which is so successful and popular it has now been running for 29 years.

We arrived on the island just in time for a snack and a bit of sightseeing before making our way to the hockey ground where we had two triangular fixtures. Our A girls, our A boys and a mixed A team from Beechwood all played against each other, as did our B girls, B boys and Beechwood B’s on the other pitch. It was great fun for our boys and girls teams to compete against each other. After these matches it was back to the hosting school for lunch and then down to the beach for the all important sand sculpting competition.

As always, the children worked very well together and created some fantastic sculptures from minions to boats to turtles. There was no time for the winning team to bask in the glory of their creation though because it was time for more sport. The girls were off to the Guernsey Ladies College to play in a netball triangular with GLC and Beechwood while the boys went back for more hockey, this time against the Beechwood Year 7’s.

At the end of this action packed day, the children went off for a relaxing night with their host families before another early start on the Saturday. Saturday saw the annual hockey festival where we enter 4 mixed teams and call ourselves the Cheltenham Blues. Everyone got a t-shirt in their team colour – we had the royals, the skys, the turks and the navies.

Teams came from all over the island to play in the tournament and also neighbouring island Jersey, and there were both clubs and schools involved. The Cheltenham Blues had a very successful day, picking up 3 out of the 4 awards at the end of the day. After the fun of the festival, the children left with their host families and all had a wonderful time at the beach, shopping, bowling, eating and socialising.

The weather could not have been better, the sun shone from start to finish. The children were impeccably behaved and once again, the trip can be deemed a huge success.

Team of the Week – Upper School“Aim for the stars…..”

Cheltenham Prep is the word on the lips of many schools on our circuit at the minute, some concerned at seeing our name as a future opponent, but many in awe of our current achievements.

At present we have 52 boys in Upper School – this is a much lower number than some of the bigger schools on the circuit, therefore, should we lower our expectations? Not al all!

The Upper School boys are currently competing on two fronts, both at a national level. The 1st VII hockey side have qualified for the UK IAPS National finals, putting us into the top 12 sides before a ball is even played.

This would be an outstanding achievement on its own, but we are also reaching semi-finals of major, nationally recognised rugby sevens tournaments in the same week.

Larger schools are not managing to match our achievements in both Hockey and Rugby and this is something that this school does not get enough credit for. Much of it is down to the determination and drive of our boys, not just those in the top teams, but including those in the teams below who push the 1st team players hard to keep their spots. Credit must also go to the staff who are working very hard on the pitches with the boys.

Before we cross the line for the first game of the hockey finals or the first game of the National 7s, this has been an outstanding sporting year so far.

Anne Marguerite is a french law student from Normandy and will be staying with us until June of Next Year. This week Anne Margeurite has been spending most of her time in the Cottage, helping with french lessons, which she has thoroughly enjoyed.

Going forward she will also support the rest of Kingfishers and providie 1-1 support with various pupils throughout the Prep.
