Poultry and pigeons may begin arriving on Wednesday August 27th,

2014 at 5:00 p.m. in place by 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 28th, and must remain in place until 6:00 p.m. on Monday September 1st.

POULTRY RULES 1. NEW ENTRY CLOSING DATE!!!!!: AUGUST 7th. LATE

ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED IF ALL THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS ARE MET:

A) ADEQUATE EXHIBIT SPACE IF AVAILABLE. B) LATE ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY 5:00 P.M. FIVE (5) DAYS PRIOR TO FAIR START DATE.

C) THE FEES FOR LATE ENTRIES SHALL BE DOUBLE THE TOTAL REGULAR ENTRY FEE. D) ENTRY FEES FOR LATE ENTRIES SHALL BE PAID BY BANK DRAFT, CERTIFIED CHECK, MONEY ORDER OR BANK CREDIT CARD (VISA, MASTERCARD OR DISCOVER CARD). DO NOT MAIL CASH.

The name of the exhibitor as printed on entry blank and fee sheet must correspond and be the same name as on breed registration papers and must correspond with SSN or tax ID number

REFUND POLICY (see administrative rule 12:02:08:13)

The fair may refund entry fees paid by an exhibitor if the exhibitor requests the refund in writing at least two weeks before the opening day of the fair and states the reason for requesting the refund.

2. All entry blanks must be typed or printed legibly to be accepted. All entries must be made upon the printed entry forms which may

be secured from the Fair Office and must show the Division and Class Numbers, color, sex and breed. Pigeon entries must list band number.

3. No bird shall be entered in the name of any other than the BONA FIDE owner or owners; and should any prove to be otherwise entered, premiums will be forfeited.

4. ENTRY FEES: Must be paid at time of making entry.

CHICKEN & DUCKS Single birds $ 2.50 each Trios - (1 male-2 females) $ 4.50 (two cages) GEESE & TURKEYS $ 3.50 each PIGEONS $ 2.00 each

5. All poultry must be entered for competition.

6. All birds must be in the Poultry Building by 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 28th, and must remain in place until 6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 1st.

7. Pigeons: All pigeons must be banded, and young birds must be seamless banded.

Poultry: All poultry must be banded, and number entered on tag as birds are cooped.

8. Substitutions within Classes already entered will be permitted prior to the opening day of the Fair. However, it is the responsibility of the exhibitor to make necessary changes on cage tag and to notify the Superintendent of all changes at check-in time. NO SUBSTITUTIONS BETWEEN CLASSES!

9. Exhibitors will not be permitted to make more than two entries in

a Class; only 100 entries permitted per exhibitor; not more than 250 entries per family, household or farm.

10. Only one member from any family, household or business

establishment may make entry in any Class except when entries are individually owned and ownership can be verified.

11. BECAUSE OF LIMITED SPACE AND NUMBER OF CAGES

THE STATE FAIR COMMISSION RESERVES THE RIGHT TO LIMIT ENTRIES TO THE NUMBERS SPECIFIED IN EACH DIVISION. Date of receipt of entry at State Fair Office shall be determining factor.

12. The utmost care will be used in handling all birds; but the

management will not be responsible for loss through fire, theft, accident or any other medium.

13. Exhibition coops and pens are furnished by the Fair

Commission. Birds are cared for without expense to the exhibitor.

14. Definition of terms:

Poultry and Pigeons Cock- A male specimen hatched prior to current year Hen- A female specimen hatched prior to current year

Cockerel- A male specimen hatched during current year Pullet- A female specimen hatched during current year Young Cock- A male specimen hatched during current year Young Hen- A female specimen hatched during current year Bantam Ducks - Those breeds normally weighing 3 lbs. Or less

15. WORTHINESS OF ENTRIES - If, in the opinion of the judge, an entry is deemed not worthy of award due to poor condition, immaturity, sickness, lack of breed type or crossbred, a cash award will not be given. Judges are encouraged to enforce this provision.

16. 4-H entries may be entered in Open Class. However, IT IS

THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OWNER TO MAKE SURE THE BIRD IS AVAILABLE AT THE APPROPRIATE TIME FOR OPEN CLASS JUDGING. Please note such dual entries on Open Class entry form.

17. The Fair reserves the right to put more than one specimen in a

coop, providing the birds belong to the same exhibitor. In no case will two males be cooped together.

18. Fowl will be shown and judged in the proper Division and Class

for breed, variety, age and sex only. If no Division is offered, no awards may be made.

19. Exhibitors of Leghorns, Rhode Island Reds, Minorcas and

Anconas MUST state whether they are Rosecomb (RC) or single Comb (SC). Golden, Silver, Buff or White Polish and Silkies MUST state whether bearded (BRD) or non-bearded (N-BRD).

20. The South Dakota State Fair Commission has adopted and will

enforce the IAFE National Code of show Ring Ethics. A copy of this code can be obtained by contacting either the State Fair Office or the building superintendent.

HEALTH REGULATIONS No health certificate is required on South Dakota poultry. Exhibits will be examined at the time of entry into the show building by a representative of the State Animal Industry Board or the Poultry Department Superintendent. All poultry imported into South Dakota must have a health certificate. All poultry imported into South Dakota must be individually pullorum tested negative or come from a pullorum free flock or state. All poultry must be shipped or brought to the show in new, unused boxes or crates or in containers that have been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected prior to use. Crates must be removed from the show room during the Fair as no storage area is available. At the direction on the State Fair Commission all animals will be subject to testing for foreign substances by the State Veterinarian.

The South Dakota State Fair is an associate member of the American Poultry Association, Inc. and will hold its show under the official rules of that organization. To members of the American Poultry Association, Inc. who are exhibitors at this show, the following awards are offered:

An APA certificate will be awarded for the following when 10 or more are judged: Grand and Reserve Champion Large Chicken Grand and Reserve Champion Bantam Grand and Reserve Champion Duck Grand and Reserve Champion Goose Grand and Reserve Champion Turkey.

The APA invites you to become a member. Annual dues are $15.00 per year, $40.00 for three years, junior dues (18 and under) are $10.00 per year. Life Endowment Trust membership is $175.00. All annual and Life Endowment Trust members receive our yearbook and are eligible to earn points toward a Master Exhibitor Award. Every member is eligible for the awards at this show. bantam divisions providing there are 25 birds competing**

The American Bantam Association is open for the competitions of all bantams on exhibition; however, only ABA members are eligible to compete for the above awards. Dues are $20.00 per year, $50.00 for three years. New members receive a copy of the quarterly and the latest available copy of the Annual American Bantam Association Year Book which lists 900 advertisers and includes a complete breed and variety index. Winners of ABA awards are listed in the year book under Who’s Who in Bantams. Starred wins are earned by Champions and Reserve Champions in the seven bantam divisions when the number of birds competing is 100 or more. Starred wins are also awarded to Best and Reserve of Breed and Variety when 100 or more birds are competing. A single bird is eligible for only one award and can earn only one starred win.
