WHY AFRICA?
EVENT SUMMARY
POWER-GEN Africa and DistribuTECH Africa represent the most comprehensive conference and exhibition serving the sub-Saharan Africa electricity sector. It brings together regional and international power sector leaders from sub-Saharan Africa and around the globe to:
Provide end-to-end coverage from electricity generation to distribution.
Design and implement the course of power and electricity for 2016 and beyond.
Explore power needs, resources and key issues affecting the region’s electricity market.
Provide pioneering and practical solutions to expand energy efficiency, technological excellence and implementation of smart solutions tailored to Africa’s power industry.
Following a global trend, governments in most sub-Saharan Africa countries have established increasingly ambitious targets for their power sectors with solar, wind, and geothermal technologies representing the highest growth. While the sub-Saharan African power sector faces many challenges, there is:
Real momentum for change, not least the UN program on Sustainable Energy for all which is sparking private-sector activity in many different parts of the value chain.
Overall, strong government support, a long-term vision, astute energy planning and private sector involvement are essential for the successful implementation of power projects in sub-Saharan Africa.
Significant opportunities in this dynamic market for power developers that can leverage these factors and garner innovative financing structures according to Frost & Sullivan Energy & Power Systems Industry Analyst, Celine Paton.

WELCOME FROM EVENT DIRECTORPOWER-GEN & DISTRIBUTECH AFRICA
WHY AFRICA?
Dear Colleague,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this year’s POWER-GEN & DistribuTECHAfrica 2016 conference and exhibition under the support of Eskom as Host Utility as we return to the wonderful city of Johannesburg where the event was first launched in 2012.
The current burgeoning demand for the delivery of secure energy services to the rapidly-expanding economies across the African continent, offers the power industry opportunities to make positive change, and by bringing the world renowned POWER-GEN and DistribuTECH names to Africa, we are proud to be part of this initiative.
At this year’s event you will find such technologies, spanning all forms of power generation systems as well as power delivery, utility automation and advanced metering – in other words the entire span of the power sector is here under one roof – designed to serve Africa’s many vertically integrated utilities. And in line with this year’s theme “Creating Power for Sustainable Growth”, the event reflects the focus on new and innovative technologies and the shared vision of strengthening sustainable infrastructure to drive economic growth in the fast growing region of sub-Saharan Africa.
This Preliminary Event Guide will help you make the most of your time at POWER-GEN & DistribuTECH Africa 2016. The impressive conference programme has been created and designed by our expert Advisory Boards with four parallel conference tracks offering a wide variety of content in the areas of strategy, technology, renewables and distribution.
The exhibition show floor gives you the opportunity to encounter many world-class suppliers and service providers, all keen to talk to you about their capabilities and expertise. The quality of exhibitors is an indication of just what the names POWER-GEN & DistribuTECH mean to the global power community. A full list of exhibitors and a map is provided to help you plan your time on the show floor.
The event also offers plenty of networking opportunity with three receptions - Opening, Networking and Closing Reception & Best Paper Awards for you to enjoy. And the various interactive exhibition floor activities including the Eskom Exhibition Forum, Rosatom Workshop, EON Gen-X Theatre and B2B Matchmaking Service all provide further opportunities for you to share your knowledge, ideas and experiences and make new business contacts.
Another highlight is the sub-Saharan Africa VIP Delegation Programme following on from the successful launch in 2015. We welcome back our returning VIP delegates and we look forward to welcoming our new VIP delegates from government, utilities and private enterprise across sub-Saharan Africa.
I urge you to engage with your peers, seek out best practice, learn about the success stories in Africa and from around the world and then go back to your businesses and implement these ideas and technologies. And next year, when we gather again, I invite you to share your experiences and help others achieve similar successes. Through this kind of sharing and co-operation we can learn from costly mistakes and benchmark projects thereby hastening the vital progress and development of our industry.
I wish you a very enjoyable, successful and productive show.
Feraye Gurel Event Director – International Events

WELCOME FROM ESKOM
8 www.powergenafrica.com
Dear colleagues,
On behalf of Eskom, I invite you to join industry experts and thought leaders at the POWER-GEN & DistribuTECH Africa 2016 conference and exhibition being held in Johannesburg, South Africa. In the short time since the inaugural conference in 2012, the event has become renowned as a world class platform to share and exchange ideas.
It is here that great minds deliberate and explore the many issues relating to Africa’s increasing demand for power, potential sources of electricity generation, project financing, regulation, plant life management, environmental management and various technologies.
As Africa’s powerhouse, generating 95% of South Africa’s electricity and making up more than 40% of the total electricity consumed in Africa, Eskom is proud to be associated with this Conference. The organisation is the 11th largest power utility in terms of generating capacity, boasting a nominal capacity of 42 710 MW. It is with keen focus that Eskom achieves its mandate of providing electricity in an efficient and sustainable manner in the areas of power generation, transmission, distribution and sales. The organisation is a critical and strategic contributor to the South African government’s goal of security of electricity supply in the country as well as economic growth and prosperity.
I look forward to reconnecting with old colleagues and meeting new thought leaders in the world of power generation and distribution. The three-day programme is bound to captivate us on multiple levels as we discover the latest in energy efficiency from leading industry experts, experience new products and innovative technologies and network with key decision makers from around the globe.
