Dear Colleague,

It is our pleasure to invite you to attend the 12th NAFEMS World Congress. For the past twenty two years this biennialNAFEMS occasion has been the premier international event focussing solely on engineering analysis and simulation. The 2009 World Congress is being held at the wonderful Crete island, a location of significant ancient history.

We are delighted to report that the response to the event so far has been overwhelming. The Congress Committee hashad a tough job over recent weeks and months selecting the best papers from the record number of abstracts that were

submitted. In the end, over 150 papers from leading experts have gone forward for inclusion in the draft agenda you can see on thefollowing pages.

As well as the traditional conference sessions, the Congress this year will also include a series of other events which have been especiallyselected for the benefits that they can bring to the delegates. A variety of workshops, round table discussion sessions and other meetings willadd to the mix of opportunities that are provided for learning about the latest developments in the technology, and how they can be appliedto real world practical applications.

Whilst the conference will cover many aspects of the use of simulation, a particular focus will be how the appropriate deployment ofsimulation can lead to a further competitive advantage through helping to stimulate innovation. It will bring together world leading industrialpractitioners, consultancies, academic researchers and software developers with a common interest in engineering analysis.

We are confident that the 2009 NAFEMS World Congress will be the International Congress of the year on Simulation Technology for theEngineering Analysis Community.

I do hope that you will get the opportunity to attend, and that I will have the pleasure of meeting you there.

Tim Morris, NAFEMS Chief Executive

Erich Schelkle

Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG and Auto-motive Simulation Center Stuttgarte.V., Germany

Senior Manager Strategy and MethodsCAE Body - Porsche AG and GeneralManager Automotive Simulation CenterStuttgart e.V.

Prof. Dr. Erich Schelkle took his engineer’s degree (Dipl.-Ing.) inAir and Space Technology at the University of Stuttgart, Germany,in 1974. Afterwards he worked as a research assistant at theInstitute of Static’s and Dynamics of Air and Space Structures(ISD) at the University of Stuttgart (Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. JohnH. Argyris), Germany, for 8 years. His principal work was thetheoretical derivation of nonlinear finite element formulations ofbeam, plate and shell structures and the development of efficientsolving algorithms for nonlinear finite element programs.

He took his engineer’s degree (Dipl.-Ing.) in Static’s andDynamics of Air and Space Structures at the University of Stutt-gart in 1981. The theme of his thesis was: "The Calculation ofStability- and Post Buckling Behavior of Thin Shell StructuresWith the Finite Element Method." Prof. Dr. Schelkle has workedat the Porsche Research & Development Center at Weissach since1981 focusing on the implementation of Computer Aided Engi-neering (CAE) tasks in the development process. One of thecrucial subjects was related to nonlinear FE calculations regardingvehicle crashworthiness and occupant safety.

Prof. Dr. Schelkle has been in charge of the Structural AnalysisDepartment in Full Vehicle Development since 1989. At the timebeing he holds the position of a Senior Manager for Strategyand Methods with regard to CAE-body. In this function he is alsoresponsible for the testing and introduction of new simulationmethods. A special focus is on the implementation of "VirtualPrototyping" at Porsche.

Prof. Dr. Schelkle has had a lectureship in Methods ofComputational Science and Engineering at the University of Stutt-gart since 1992, lecturing about "Computer-aided SimulationMethods (MCAE) in a Modern Development Process". In April2001, he was awarded the title of an honorary Professor.

Prof. Dr. Schelkle has also been the Chairman of the Finite Ele-ment working group of the German Automotive ResearchAssociation (FAT) in Frankfurt/Main since 1994.

Further, he holds the position of the Managing Director of thenew founded Automotive Simulation Center Stuttgart e.V. (ASCS)since July 2008 and he is additional a consultant for nationaland European research projects.

Tsuyoshi Yasuki

Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan

Mr. Tsuyoshi Yasuki, project generalmanager with Toyota Motor Corporation, leads crashworthiness, occupantprotection, human FE modeling andcomputational fluid dynamics areas ofAdvanced CAE division.

Mr. Yasuki has 27 years experiences in developing newmethodologies, validation, application of large scale computingsystems including automotive body structures and chassis systemssubject to static and dynamic loading conditions.

Mr. Yasuki holds a B.S. and an M.S. in naval architectureengineering from Osaka University.

Preliminary Agenda, June 19 – Friday

François Besnier

Principia RD, France

Since 1970, Francois Besnier hasacquired a huge expertise in the field ofnumerical simulation applied to industrialproblems and is recognized as one of theleading figures in the engineering analysiscommunity in France. His skills extend from numerical methods, particularly finite element methods and related softwaredevelopment (CAD integration), to solving industrial problemsand analyst team management.

The most important projects and industrial fields he was involvedin include:Energy and nuclear: structural study of nuclear power plants and

nuclear reactors components, static, thermal and thermomechanics, seismic, fatigue, accidental situations, ASME andRCCM code checks, pipes (EDF, CEA, NERSA andsubcontractors).

Aerospace; dynamic studies and developments linked to theAriane programs (launcher vibrations, fluid structure coupling),satellites (thermo mechanic, dimensioning, vibrations).Airplane and helicopter projects (Airbus, Belouga, HN90).

Car and surface transportation: static, vibration, comfort, fatigueof cars, car components, trucks and carriages.

Shipbuilding: scientific manager of a R&D and engineeringcompany in maritime industries, including monitoring and seatrial measurements.

Engineering and structural analysis software development teammanagement.

Technical and scientific direction of services companies.R&D project definition and management in shipbuilding industry.

Francois Besnier has presented courses and lectures for over 30years in the most prestigious French Engineer Schools, includingEcole Centrale de Paris, Nantes, Lyon, Ecole Nationale des Pontset Chaussées, Faculté des Sciences de Nantes, ANAST (Liège)…François is a well-respected consultant with a wealth of industrialexperience. His lively presentation style puts over the key conceptsin a manner which involves participants fully in the coursematerial.

Louis Komzsik

Siemens PLM Software, USA

Dr. Louis Komzsik is Chief NumericalAnalyst, Office of Architecture andTechnology, Siemens PLM Software

Louis Komzsik is a graduate of theTechnical University of Budapest, Hungary, with a doctorate inmechanical engineering and worked in the industry for almostfour decades, including 20 years at the MacNeal-Schwendler(now MSC Software) Corporation. He is currently the chiefnumerical analyst in the Office of Architecture and Technologyat Siemens PLM Software.

His industry accomplishments include computational methodsthat became de-facto industrial standards in the area ofcommercial finite element analysis tools such as NASTRAN. Heis the original author of the NASTRAN Numerical MethodsHandbook, first published by MSC almost 20 years ago. His bookon the Lanczos method published by SIAM has also beentranslated to Japanese, Korean and Hungarian.

He captured his industrial experience and expertise in anengineering mathematics trilogy, starting with a 2004 book aboutComputational Techniques of Finite Element Analysis, currentlyin its second edition. The second book titled ApproximationTechniques for Engineers was published in 2006 and the closingbook of Applied Calculus of Variations for Engineers appearedin 2008.

He is an editor of the International Journal of Engineering withComputers, published by Springer Verlag and serves on theeditorial board for the International Journal of Computer AidedDesign, published by Elsevier Sciences.
