FRIENDLY PreGA Friendly Environment

The workshops will take place at Taipei Medical University (TMU). TMU participates in carbon reduction as well as sustainable management. Lodging for 250 delegates will be at Pacific Business Center Hotel and AT Boutique Hotel. It takes only 10 minutes-walk to attend the session at TMU. Breakfast will be served at the hotel, whereas the rest of the meal will be served in TMU. We are eager to share the typical Taiwanese cuisine with you.

Eco-friendly

Besides walking, you may ride an eco-friendly YouBike to enjoy the beauty of Taipei. There are YouBike stations just in front of TMU campus, as well as many Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations. YouBike, the bike sharing program, aims to encourage the citizens to use those eco-friendly vehicles, which will reduce air pollution, and at the same time promote people’s health. (For more information, please check p.13)

Friendly Culture

Taipei is well-known not only for its natural beauty and modern facilities, but also the friendliness implemented at every corner of the city. You can always expect polite conversation with smiley face whenever you approach Taipei people. A warm welcoming and helping hand is always shown when you need any assistance.

Friendly Theme

During the session, the postpartum care center in TMU Hospital will be introduced to you. There is a big difference between eastern- and western-style postpartum cares. In Taiwan, besides general medical practices, herbal medicine is often used to maintain the balance between “Qi” and “Xue”. We are looking forward to showing you the Taiwanese postpartum care! (The visiting program will be held on August 5th.)

to bring you the most real and

genuine Taipei!!!

Remember to bring toiletries, including toothbrush set, towel, shampoo, and etc. As we emphasize the importance of sustainability, we wish to reduce as much waste as we can. Hence, no disposable toiletries will be provided by the hotel.

* Toiletries are available upon request but an extra NT 600 will be charged

Participants in the social program (Maokong Dinner Banquet and Delights of Taipei Night) will have to pay the fees when checking in. The qualification will be eliminated if the payment procedure is not finished.

Pleases wear semi-formal attires for the opening ceremony.

Aboriginal Culture in Taiwan Taiwanese aborigines belong to Austronesian,

whose living area ranges from the Pacific Ocean to the Southeast Asia. They are classified into Highland and Plains aborigines according to where they live. Aborigines are usually good at singing and sports.

Indigenous Festival

Indigenous people rely heavily on nature; therefore they convey their appreciation and worship through unique ceremonies and rituals. For example, the ear-shooting ceremony of Bunun tribe aims to pray for a bumper crop. Young men go hunting and then they cut off the ears of their kills, attaching the ears on a pole as targets for shooting. Children also practice shooting arrows, so they can be good hunters after growing up.

The flying fish festival of Yami tribe is divided into several parts, including blessing of the boats, praying for a bountiful catch, summoning the fish, etc. Men of the tribe wear loincloths, silver helmets, and gold strips, facing the sea to pray for a bountiful catch.

Food

The main principle in indigenous cooking is to retain as much original flavors as possible. Most ingredients are obtained from the nature, such as the peppercorns of the litsea tree, the leaves of the decaisne angelica tree, and the pigeon pea. In recent years, indigenous cuisine has spread out and taken its place on the international stage. It is a must-try for food connoisseurs traveling in Taiwan.

Costumes and Music

The aborigines pass the talent of brewing wines with rice from generation to generation. What’s more, every group of Taiwanese aborigines also has their own unique tribal totem. The colorful and complicated totems are usually applied to their costume and accessories.

Maybe thanks to the long-term connection with the nature, or maybe thanks to the genetic advantage, most Taiwanese aborigines are born to be great singers and athletes. In 1996, the theme song of Olympic Games in Atlanta, was song by the Bunun Tribe.

Calligraphy: Tradition, Change, Innovation

To Chinese people, calligraphy is not only a writing form, but represents a person’s virtue. The complexity in the structure of Chinese characters leads to various styles of fonts. Moreover, the soft writing brush enables the writers to use different degrees of strength and angle, thus creating variation of characters.

Tools

There are four tools used to write calligraphy: brush, ink, ink stone, and paper. They are so important to calligraphers so that they are collectively called the “Four Treasures of Study”.

Basic Principles

There are eight writing principles: Dian (dot), Heng (horizontal), Shu (vertical), Gou (hook), Ti (raise), Wan (curve), Pie (slant) and Na (press). The Chinese character “永” means eternity and is composed of those eight typical strokes.

Calligraphers

There are noted calligraphers in almost every Chinese dynasty. One of the greatest among them was Wang Xizhi, the “Sage of Calligraphy”, who was a maestro of the “running script”.

Artistic Value

There are lots of similar features between Chinese painting and calligraphy. They both emphasize the skills of using the brush, and both value the integral structure and visual balance between dark ink and the white background. Thus, a Chinese artwork often accompanied poems written on the side. Aside from paintings, calligraphy can be attached to other artifacts such as architecture, sculptures, bronze ware, or daily necessities. To the ancient Chinese, calligraphy had been blended with life.

Spring Couplets

In Chinese families, doors and windowpanes get a new coat which highlights calligraphy with black characters on red paper during the spring festival and exudes an atmosphere of rejoicing and festivity. A couplet is made up of two lines of verse which are called the "head" and the "tail" respectively. The characters on these two verses should correspond with each other phonologically and syntactically. The themes of the verses usually suggest good fortune or longevity.

Four Treasures of Study

You can 1. Learn the development of calligraphy 2. Write on spring couplets 3. Make creative calligraphy with dazzling colors and distinctive designs

Folk Tricks Art and Performance – Diabolo

History

The diabolo, Chinese yo-yo, is a toy from China consisting of two equally sized discs connected with a long axle. An alternating lifting and dropping motion using two sticks, each held in one hand, keeps the yo-yo spinning on a string tied between the sticks. In modern times, it is used as a children's toy and as a performance tool in circus events like juggling and sometimes in Chinese dance. It is possible to perform a large variety of tricks with the Chinese yo-yo which can be as easy as throwing the yo-yo up into the air or tossing it around the user's back. It was invented roughly in the 15th-16th centuries during the Ming dynasty. Like the Western yo-yo, it maintains its spinning motion through a rotating effect based on conservation of angular momentum.

Features

The Chinese yo-yo is excellent for developing gross motor skills in a non-competitive and rewarding way. Beyond developing basic skills, playing Chinese yo-yo hones the ability to focus on tasks and can improve learning outcomes in other fields. Practicing yo-yo teaches physical and spiritual discipline, and can help temper one's personality. The non-competitive nature of the Chinese yo-yo creates a friendly social environment where skills are openly shared between players and friendships are strengthened. It is also a unique and visual way of making Chinese culture and heritage accessible to a broad audience. Plus, it makes you look really cool!

Let it “Go”

Go game, common meaning: “encircling game”, is a board game for two players that originated in China more than 2,500 years ago. The game is rich in strategy despite its relatively simple rules. As of mid-2008, there were well over 40 million Go players worldwide, the overwhelming majority of them living in the East Asia.

In China, Go was considered one of the four cultivated arts of the Chinese scholar gentleman, along with calligraphy, painting, and playing the musical instrument guqin.

Rules and Skills

The opening is the most difficult part of the game for professional players and takes a disproportionate amount of the playing time. The objective of the game is to use one’s stones to surround a larger total area of the board than the opponent. Once placed on the board, stones may not be moved, but stones can be removed from the board if captured; this is done by surrounding an opposing stone or group of stones by occupying all orthogonally-adjacent points. Players continue in this fashion until neither player wishes to make another move; the game has no set ending conditions. When a game concludes, the territory is counted along with captured stones and komi to determine the winner.

Chinese Paper Cutting

Paper cutting is the art of cutting paper designs. The art has evolved uniquely all over the world to adapt to different cultures. Red is a commonly used color. It has distinct uses, almost all of which are for health, prosperity, or decorative purposes.

History

The oldest surviving paper cut out is from the 6th century Six Dynasties period. Paper cutting continued to be practiced during the Song and Tang dynasties as a popular form of decorative art. By the 8th or 9th century, paper cutting appeared in the West Asia. Within a century, paper cutting was being done in most of middle Europe.

Symmetry

Chinese paper cuttings are normally symmetrical. There are basic cut outs that are usually created by some folding over a proportioned crease, and then cutting some shapes. The number symmetrical patterns is usually even, for example, 2, 4, 24, etc.

Process

There are two methods of manufacture: scissors or knives. In the scissor method, several pieces of paper are fastened together. The motif is cut with sharp, pointed scissors. Knife cuttings are fashioned by putting several layers of paper on a relatively soft foundation consisting of a mixture of tallow and ashes. Following a pattern, the artist cuts the motif into the paper with a knife which is usually held vertically.

Uses

Today, paper cuttings are chiefly decorative. Entrances decorated with paper cut outs are supposed to bring good luck. Paper cuttings used to be used as patterns, especially for embroidery and lacquer work. Paper cuts are used by younger generation as a decoration for their kits and books. Modern paper cutting has developed into a commercial industry. Paper cutting remains popular in contemporary China, especially during special events like Chinese New Year or weddings.

The Maokong Green Bamboo is shaped like a bull’s horn with the fragrance of Asian pears. The husk is bright and glossy, with a tinge of gold. Its sweet and delectable taste is memorable.

Autumn: Hiking to the U-Theatre

With the gentle breeze and scenic view, hiking up Makong mountain trails is a pleasurable experience. The U-Theatre Sacred Drummer beside the trail gradually draws art into daily life, and also draws living into art performances.
