HANDOUT 3
Read the following story carefully and say whether the statements are true (T) or false (F).
Support your answer when the statement is false.
A WORK OF LOVE
A few years ago Shirley and Amy took a trip to the south. Nobody told them
about the conditions they would encounter in some of the small villages there:
Nobody was working in the fields. Everybody was inside their houses because it
rained heavily . The roads were washed out, but no one had the resources to pave
them . The children had to walk for hours before getting to the only school in the area.
Amy asked, "why doesn't somebody do something to help these people?". There
wasn't anyone who could give her an answer.
When Shirley and Amy returned home they thought they should try to help
some of the poor people in their own city. Someone found out about their plans and
gave them some ideas and supplies. Nobody believed Shirley and Amy would go to
a poor area to work. In a few months everyone was surprised to see so many changes
in the neighborhoods they had visited. Shirley and Amy took some friends with them
and they taught the people how to make the best use of the things they had.

A REMARKABLE PARTY
You are having the most remarkable party in history! By suspending time, you are able to
invite any 12 people, dead or alive, to the party. Which 12 people would you choose?
CONSIDER:
1. It is not necessary that you invite important people. You can choose someone who
is interesting for other reasons.
2. Perhaps you would like to establish a theme for the evening. One group of guests
would like to have fun, another group of guests would like to discuss interesting
philosophical questions. Remember that the guests you invite may depend upon the
theme.
For example, you would not want to invite people who might hate each other to an
evening of «fun and relaxation».
3. Choose at least two people who are not in the list.
4. Here is a list of possible guests:
Adam
Albert Einstein

DIALOG
Situation:
Maureen and Dave work for different companies. They haven’t seen each other for a
long time. They meet in the street unexpectedly, and they have the following
conversation.
Maureen : Hey, Dave, where have you been all this time? The last time I saw you was
two months ago or so.
Dave : Well, I was in Hawaii last week and visited Mexico last month. Now, I’m here
in Santiago until the end of the year.
Maureen : Oh, I see. How long were you in Hawaii?
Dave : Two weeks.
Maureen : Did you go with your wife?
Dave : No, I didn’t. She had to work.
Maureen : Could you often go to the beach?
Dave : Yes, usually in the mornings, although sometimes I stayed at the swimming-
pool. How have you been?
Maureen : Last week I was sick. I had to stay in bed a couple of days, but I’m OK now.
Dave : Really? I’m sorry to hear that; you’re never sick. Well, I’m afraid I have to
run. It was nice to see you again. See you later.
Maureen : It was nice for me, too. Take care. Bye-bye.
